GJ question

I'm sure those of you who are still in the process of moving from GJ or still follow the massive disaster currently in-progress already noticed this some time ago, but I only maintain a fanfiction dump that I rarely update. (More of a backup, really...I've been having computer problems and wanted to keep a backup of my work online in the event I can't resurrect my hard drive) So I don't post there all that often. But I decided today that, what the hell, I may as well have a reliable backup and move everything over here. Hello, IJ!

So folks, riddle me this: why do I now only have a single userpic that isn't even there? I understand GJ is running off a backup DB, so I would understand otherwise, but it looks as if the "latest journals updated" on the front page still have their default userpic. Some of these journals had been created well after mine had been. So it doesn't look to be an issue of falling back on an earlier database, and I'm guessing the only ones who got to keep their default userpic were those journals that updated on a daily basis.

Anyway, I suppose it's not an issue at this point, (though I do with I had been able to back up my icons...the originals are on the same hard drive with my fanfics) but if anyone has any theories/inside knowledge/dirt, I'd be more than happy to read about it.

From what I can tell, that's been a problem at gj forever. If you don't update every day or at least every few (like 3-4) days, your icons turn into the pretty little red x's. Just another indication that the site was gonna go to hell without the comfort of a handbasket at any time because the so called "admin" has always had his head buried where the sun don't shine.

I always thought that was a log-in issue; I hadn't updated my GJ since June of '07 but until the latest stupidity, my icons were fine so long as I logged in every week or so.

Oh well. YMMV, and all that.

They are currently running on a backup server and have disabled user pictures.

I understand that, but my point was that if userpics were disabled due to running off the backup database, wouldn't all of the userpics be disabled instead of just some? That's what I can't figure out: why are some userpics still available but others aren't?

I just checked over on my GJs and all the user pics have disappeared.

Glitch or a new policy? My default still shows but not on actual entries.

I think it may have to do with the database going down, that GJ can only support default icons for active users. I don't even have that much any more, even my default icon is now gone. (In spite of the message saying that I have 1 of 1 allowed userpics. No damn sense...but that's GJ for ya)

I logged in just yesterday and had only 1 icon. I keep alot of my icons on my hard drive... The backup database maybe causing some of the issues though.

Yeah, same here. Mine are gone as well, except my default and it's only visible on my profile page.

It must be fairly new--last week I had icons (and I saved a few, which was a good thing, since they're now gone.)

So glad I moved all my journals and comms here!
