The viewing option

mood: confused
Hello everyone. Newbie here. I migrated from LJ to IJ, but I mostly use my IJ for my dark fictional stories and fandom participation.

I hope this is within topic for the community. Is it my imagination or the viewing option on LJ where you can switch how you view the site is now down to 3? There is now Horizon, Vertigo, and Lynx. I vaguely remember there's 2 other layouts, the older ones that existed before 6A took over LJ, but I could be mistaken.

I hope I'm not the only one noticing this. Otherwise, I missed some LJ news that happened a long time ago.

I keep the link to the full styles page on my profile, so that when it gets reset I can find it again. (LJ occasionally loses the style choices during major server overhauls.)

I remember reading, back when they were first experimenting with Vertigo, that their intention was to get rid of Dystopia and the other one (which I don't remember) and just leave the three you see now. I got the idea that they wanted to streamline their look, so it was easily recognizable no matter what viewing option you were using.

From what I remember, they were going to take the others off the viewing options list, but leave them available for now, for the die-hards who insisted on using them. I ended up beta testing Vertigo when they offered that option a few months ago, and decided to switch over to it since I like the arrangement, but I really like the color scheme of Dystopia much, much better.

I told them when I did the beta test that the color scheme of both Horizon and Vertigo was bland, blander and blandest - but hey - they've yet to listen to anything I said, so why should they start now?

I use Dystopia. I don't care for the color scheme, but it has the links I use, arranged in a way that makes sense to me.

I use "My LJ" as my main start point, and navigate by opening new tabs from there. Since Vertigo doesn't have it at all, it's useless to me. Oh, and I hate the pale-blue corporate look.

Dropdowns drive me crazy; I have dialup internet at home and dropdowns are always touchy.

I heart Dystopia. I use it for every account I have, because like you said, the link ordering is what I need and I hate drop down menus and personally, the color scheme appeals to me a lot more than LOTS of white space and then blue.

Vertigo just bloody well gives me Vertigo, if you'll excuse the pun. And Horizon is dreadful.

It's worth noting that, if you use the default scheme (Horizon -- which is also what anyone either not logged in or who isn't an LJ user sees) you will see a Report Abuse link on almost every page, the only exceptions being where a user has their journal style set to override scheme display for individual posts or calendar pages, or when a ?style=light is appended to the url.

User profile pages, user icon 'allpics' pages, and image gallery pages (for those who host images on LJ) all display the link, if and only if such pages are viewed in Horizon.

Yes, this means that even though the majority of actual LJ users can't see it, muckrakers coming to the site looking to stir up trouble have a nice easy way to get started.
