Beacons in the Darkness As an avid Batman fan, I do think that there are several reasons why the Bat-verse stands so high among readers and is a source for so many great stories, and while the most important reason is up to everyone's own opinion, I think that it is hard to argue that one of the most important reasons isn't the supporting cast, their relationships with each other and the very world they inhabit. They all share a depth and complexity that is unfortunately relatively rare in such abundance in comic books and perhaps even more importantly, they can all be wrong in something. Especially Batman, as he has often been. They are flawed individuals, who just struggle to overcome those flaws and just do the right thing, not always succeeding, and to me makes them so relatable and even more heroic to me.

ORACLE: YEAR ONE (and John Ostrander) This post consists of 6 pages (5 full pages and two halves of two different pages) from an 18-page story from The Batman Chronicles #5 (and a cover), called "Oracle--Year One: Born of Hope", written by John Ostrander and Kim Yale.
The story is supposed to take place after the events of The Killing Joke, where former Batgirl Barbara Gordon was shot by the Joker and her legs paralysed.
I'd also like to bring up something you may have already seen 'round the comics blogosphere, but writer John Ostrander has been battling with glaucoma, is apparently in danger of losing his eyesight, and is struggling to pay the medical costs. A website's been set up (www.comix4sight.com) with a longer explanation of the situation, but there's a online donation drive and an auction in August. Any money leftover is to be donated to the Hero Initiative.

DCU Holiday Special As requested by ladymirth, scans from last years DC Holiday Special.
In A Day Without Sirens, there are posters up advertising a day without guns, knives, etc. Despite Jim Gordon's complete disbelief, there are 24 hours without a single 911 call and a downtrodden Jim is much cheerier when he meets Batman, who seems quite happy himself.
( 2 scans under the cut )
In It's a Wonderful Night, Dick runs into trouble while trying to hand deliver a special present for Tim. He then discovers Tim with Owen Mercer at a showing of 'It's A Wonderful Life'.
( 2 scans under the cut )
In The Night Before Christmas, the Teen Titans take a christmas break and go hang out. Tim is a bit emo and he and Cassie reflect at Rockerfeller Centre.
( 2 scans under the cut )
In Party Animal, John Stewart (Green Lantern) and Roy Harper (Red Arrow), are late for the Christmas party, which even Batman is attending. They bring Shaggy Man along to give S.T.A.R labs a break, who gets spooked by the singing. Let's face it, you would too. It all ends with a good partying.

When Robin Met Superman - Dick, Jason & DCAU!Tim. I think it's been established that there are a lot of Superman fans in the DCU. A lot of people wear the t-shirts, love autographs and generally wanted to be Superman when they grow up.
I decided to post this when going through some old issues, I realised that a few of the Robins get thoroughly excited when meeting the man for the first time. These are from Legends of the DC Universe #6 [6], Action Comics #594 [4] and Gotham Adventures #36 [2]
( I think 'Wow' is the keyword here. 12 scans under the cut. )

A few perfect moments:: Batman vs. Predator As I was looking over some of the one perfect moment, I was reminded of Batman Vs. Predator, which to me is one of the greatest crossover stories ever published and an insanely awesome bout between the two characters mentioned in the title. It also contained three perfect moments for three central charaters in the Batverse as well as two beautiful large images, which contrast each other in several ways.

Joker is God. Amen. So last post... last day... Joker/Harley week. Sniff, sniff.
Anyways this is my favourite scene from the novelization of No Man's Land by Greg Rucka. A lot of it a more detailed version of the comics, but he did add some great bits. I would highly, highly, highly, highly recommend this book to anyone. It's a great read and has some beautiful Cass/Babs scenes. His Babara Gordon is AMAZING. Seriously. Her anger over Huntress... gahhh... well I don't want to spoil it for you, but get it. GET IT!
And for legality, a scan from Mad Love.
This requires a bit of reading.... but it's only a couple of pages!

Women in Dumpsters: Batman and Jason as Robin Batman #414, #421, #422; 7 scans from each issue, plus the cover.
These three issues form a bigger story arc. The basic plot is such: there's been a series of killings of young women in Gotham, and Batman is searching the murderer. There are a few headdesky plot points, but don't let that drive you away: it's a very good story. #422 especially is wonderfully constructed, but the rest is nonetheless interesting on its own.
I'm posting it because it's an arc than ran during Jason's period as Robin, and though Jason only appears in #422, the story deals with some themes that are inherently linked to his character. Emotional involvement, anger issues, the difference between what is “just” and what is legal, attitude toward women-as-victims, all of which are expanded upon. My comments regarding how the action relates to Jason's character are in italics.
Batman #422 is Jason's last appearance before Garzonas, in Batman #424.

Gotham Knights #42 The gist of it is, Alfred becomes sick with a virus. Precautions are taken and everything is done to make him better. This issue did a great job of convincing me Bruce is a human being. I could have posted the entire thing, because I really did love it. It also shows how big an effect Alfred has on those around him. I thoroughly recommend this one.

The Origin of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl
Now, I love Babs as Oracle, and Cass as Batgirl, but that doesn't mean I have no love for Babs' time as Batgirl. Especially these stories.

The Great Batsignal Booty Call Following mysteryfan's fabulous post of parts of A Night On The Town, and several calls for more BatCat, I'm posting a very brief, personal favorite moment from that storyline (issue number pending, sorry), in which Gordon gets a surprise, and Selina shows us what the Batsignal is best used for...
ETA: As I'm in the middle of looking to fill a request made in these comments, and have quite a bit too much knowledge of this couple and scans of them to share, does anyone think they'd like to see an uber-comprehensive multi-part Bat and Cat history, which would cover all their various romances and other dynamics over the decades/continuities/earths? Because I'm thinking I'm a-gonna do one.
