Granny Goodness wants YOU - For the Female Fury Cadets....
The Karl and Barbara Kesel run on Hawk and Dove was one of my favourite titles back in the 1990's. They oversaw the introduction of Dawn Granger as the second Dove (Who was, to be honest, FAR more interesting than Don Hall had ever been) and created as good a superhero comic as one might hope to find as well.

The Kesels are amongst the few people who seems to "get" Jack Kirby characters and concept, Karl in particular used them a lot in things like this title (and Superboy), and in a way that was usually respectful, but expanded on them in ways that Kirby never did, usually because he was already moving on to his NEXT idea.

Take the Female Furies, Granny Goodness' elite warriors; Lashina, Stompa, Bernadeth and the marvellously named Mad Harriet. In some way these ladies are a lynchpin of the DCU, an equivalent perhaps to the MU's Wrecking Crew. They're powerful, versatile, each has an awesome visual design, and together form a team which is a good, but not unbeatable, challenge for a new hero team (or single hero if they're powerful enough) to test their mettle and resourcefulness. They also have the advantage of not needing much explanatory motivation "A mission from Darkseid/Granny Goodness" covers a multitude of plot points.

And at the same time, they had a static membership for a LOOOONG time. Prior to this story they had only ever added ONE member to the team when John Ostrander introduced the archer Artemiz and her cyber-pack (Technologically enhanced Apokaliptian wolves, NOT exactly cuddly puppies).

And then we had this story, from Hawk and Dove 21, with guest art from Steve Erwin, which presents us with a...

Superman & the Creeper
Showcase cover

Superman teams up with everyone's favorite Ditko loon, the Creeper, in this Crisis cross-over issue of DC Comics Presents (#88, Dec. 1985). Written by Steve Englehart and inked by Karl Kesel (cover inked by Giordano), this issue shows Giffen at his finest.

The Power Company: Witchfire
What happens when singer, actor, stunt girl etc.... Witchfire and Wonder Woman meet at a concert?

A rather interesting meeting with a very powerful DC supervillain who is in no way *cough* connected to Blackest Night.

Just thought you all might enjoy this...

One Perfect Moment: Superboy and Tana.
Before Wonder Girl, Before Batgirl, and before Knockout. There was a girl that was a flame to the Teen of Steel's heart.  Her name was Tana Moon. Sorry about the lack-cut, it was late and I need to head to bed early, plus I took the time to check my grammar.

Week of Doom: A Choice of Dooms
Curses. I was working on scanning some more Doom 2099 and remembered something when reading the Unthinkable entry. We lost a great Doom moment from Fantastic Four vol. 3 #54 aka "A Choice of Dooms" that was posted awhile ago. Given it's a week of Doom, now is the perfect time to revisit it.

Harley Quinn vs. Batman
Continuing posts in anticipation for Gotham City Sirens. Here's a scene from Harley Quinn #12 which climaxes Kesel's first arc.

Kenny Two-Bear had henched for just about all the main colorful freaks in Gotham. His brother, Nixon, was a veteran of Intergang, but was new in town. They both started working for Harley, but Nix just never quite got how things worked in that city. Kenny was always warning him that things are different, there, that there are things you can do other places, but that you just don't do in Gotham if you want to survive.

Nix didn't listen, and decided to break one of those rules, namely betraying his colorful psychotic boss. Kenny doesn't like the idea, knowing the consequences, but goes along because Nix is his brother.

Meanwhile, Batman, who's been investigating for several issues (And he's especially mad about the destruction of Wayne Manor in an earlier issue, though that totally wasn't really Harley's fault) is closing in...

When Jason Todd believed in heroes -
- helped turn the tide on the umpty-millionth Apokolips invasion, and Bruce acted like a real father to Jay. Six scans (not my scans!) from the Legends miniseries, circa 1987, writing by John Ostrander and Len Wein, art by John Byrne and Karl Kesel.
It just keeps getting worse! )
Gosh, remember when stopping Apokoliptic invasions was actually fun?

ETA: Can I get a "Jason Todd" tag, Your Modlinesses? Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson and Cass Cain already have them, so, equal time for black sheep Robins plz?
