About: | Welcome to scans_daily, a community for posting scans of pages from comic books, manga, comic strips and webcomics. Anyone wanting to post comic scans of their own is totally encouraged to do so, but first, please read all the rules below for the sake of our sanity and yours. Note to comics publishers: The new scans_daily rules, especially those concerning quantity of images uploaded and abutting fair use requirements, are a work in progress. We hope to soon produce a new version of the rules that will satisfy U.S.C. 17 § 107. If you have questions or concerns, please contact dailyscans[at]gmail[dot]com. Unofficial community mottos: 1) At scans_daily, it's never just you. 2) It only counts as subtext if it's subtle. 3) Scans or it didn’t happen. CODE OF CONDUCT. » Community Ethos. » Definitions. » Posting Guidelines. » Requests. » Creator Rights. » Discipline (but Not that Kind). » Administrivia. » Affiliates. ETHOS. 1. Scans Daily was founded by girl geeks, and members of slash fandom but now strives to provide an atmosphere which is LGBT-friendly, anti-racist, anti-ableist, woman-friendly and otherwise discrimination and harrassment free. The moderation team is always striving to make it a safer space for all fans, but this is not a safe space. Members come from all walks of life to talk about and share extracts from comics, and not all of them are on the same page regarding anti-oppression theory. Calling out other members or creators for discriminatory or oppressive behavior is encouraged for the good of the community. Note: Please contact a moderator immediately if you see another member making discriminatory remarks. Unfamiliar with terms like 'calling out' and 'anti-oppression theory'? Check out our resource page for some primers. 2. Do not make personal attacks or insults* in posts or comments. This applies to comments to both other members in the community and the creators whose work is being discussed. We welcome critical opinions, but please try to concentrate on the work rather than the person. It's perfectly fine to disagree with others and to express your own opinions, but if you can't do so without resorting to personal attacks or passive aggression, then that's probably a sign that you should take a step back from the conversation. Our aim is to create an atmosphere where members can be passionate about comics in all ways, and don't feel personally threatened by others. Threats or wishes of bodily harm upon other community members or creators, even in jest, will not be tolerated. Please consult our FAQ posts, which include examples of appropriate and inappropriate commentary. [Coming soon.] *Please note that calling out other members for discriminatory behavior is NOT considered a personal attack here at Scans Daily. For our specific policy on discriminatory behavior, please refer to rule #1. If you see someone making insulting comments, contact a moderator to let them know about it. 3. SD respects our members' rights to privacy and control over their online identities. As far as we're concerned you are your pseudonym. Trolling and attempts to dismiss other posters on the basis of their "hiding behind a fake name" will not be tolerated. Unauthorized public release of a fellow member's contact information will result in immediate banning. DEFINITIONS. Some terminology that will make it easier for you to understand the rules. Recent Comics. A recent comic is defined as being either a) The most recent issue of a comic or b) a comic that has come out in the last month. When a comic no longer meets one of these criteria, it is no longer classed as a recent comic. Previews are included as scans from a recent comic. NSFW. Standing for "not safe for work," this is a colloquial term referring to graphic content - not stuff you would want your boss to see, hence the etymology. Obviously, many bosses wouldn't want you to look at any comics when you should be working, but when we say NSFW, we're talking about nudity, sex and sexual situations, and extreme violence/gore. Think hard R/NC-17. Spoilers. Generally speaking, information that gives away the plot or the "fun stuff" about a story. Practically speaking, everybody has slightly different definitions of what spoils a story for them, so here's our policy: all inside content of a comic two months old or younger is a spoiler. All solicitation information is spoilery. However, comics covers are not spoilers. POSTING GUIDELINES. FYI: Members whose posts contain minor violations of the rules below (legality, one or two extra pages, etc) will be given six hours to correct the issue. Sorry, but we can't take your job/bedtime/afternoon outing into account - everyone lives in different time zones. Posts with major violations such as NSFW/spoilery/outsized images outside an lj-cut or too many recent scans are subject to immediate deletion without warning. If this is your first post to the community - regardless of whether you posted to our defunct livejournal site before - please read the posting guidelines faq. You can also check out our resource exchange for tips on scanning and image hosts. 1. LEGALITY Each post must have at least one image scanned from a comic (webcomics are fine). Photo-manipulations of pages/panels do not fulfill this requirement. 2. PAGE COUNTS
It is your responsibility to check that another user hasn't beaten you to the punch. You can use the tags, and browse the archives to search through past entries. We will be relatively lenient if you accidentally post a few extra pages of a comic that's 30 years old and out of print in any collection, but a comic that's in print will be deleted without warning. Exceptions to the above will by made at the discretion of the moderators. Please contact us at dailyscans[at]gmail[dot]com if you in doubt, or confused about these rules. 3. PREVIEW IMAGES You may use one preview image, maximum size 400x300 pixels, outside of the cut; it must be work-safe and it cannot contain spoilers. If it's from a recent comic, it is not allowed outside of a cut, no matter how spoilery it isn't. 4. LJ-CUTS LJ-cuts are required for any post which has more than one image. Long blocks of text, or text with spoilers should be behind a cut. Because the community is being followed on LJ via a RSS feed, we ask that you use the following code, in place of the usual [lj-cut]: 5. NSFW As stated above, anything that is nsfw should be put under an lj-cut. Additionally, we ask that you use the "nsfw" tag and mention its status above the cut in the actual entry. Finally, the post should be friendslocked so that only community members can see it. If an entry is NSFW but has not followed these three rules, it will be deleted, without consultation. THIS is the warning. 6. SPOILERS All spoilery content should be behind an lj-cut. On another note, if you would like to discuss a spoiler in a post that is not already devoted to spoilery content, please use this handy-dandy black-out text created by kiseki: 7. TAGS Don't forget to tag your posts! A complete listing of all our tags can be found here. If you're new to tagging please see foxhack's tagging tutorial and the IJ tag FAQ. Tags should adhere the following format: char: batgirl/oracle/barbara gordon, creator: bill sienkiewicz, in-joke: context is for the weak. All members have the ability to create, add, and edit tags, but not all members tag appropriately. In order to keep the tags up to date, we've assembled a crack team of Tag Wranglers. If you'd like to join the team, email us at dailyscans[at]gmail[dot]com. 8. BANDWIDTH THEFT Only direct link to images on your own web space. If you'd like to point out scans on someone else's webspace to the group, please use a text link. Bandwidth theft never goes well. If you want to host your own pictures, imageshack works perfectly well. Just don’t host porn there; they’ll delete it. 9. MANAGING COMMENTS AND ENTRIES Do not screen or delete comments, or posts, unless directed by a moderator, or for the purposes of editing/correcting errors. REQUESTS. Once a month we will have a requests post where members can ask for certain scans to be posted. Other members seeking inspiration can look through the requests and fulfill someone's dream. Posting a request is no guarantee of its being filled, but request posts will be archived so that members can look through comments from previous months and answer them if they so desire. Current requests can be found here. Older requests are archived in the memories. CREATOR RIGHTS Scans Daily welcomes the participation of comics creators. Creator participation is subject to the same basic rules that govern the behaviour of fans in the community. However, SD and NSD recognize creators prerogative to control the republication of their work. 1. Copyrighted material will be immediately removed at the request of creators and copyright owners. Requests for removal of copyrighted material should be directed to the moderation team 2. Spoilers will be removed at the discretion of individual posters. It is not our policy to suppress discussion of comics. Requests for removal of spoilers should be directed to the original poster. DISCIPLINE (BUT NOT THAT KIND). Users that break the rules may be given warnings by the mods. These warnings will not be handed out arbitrarily and summarily. They will be the result of discussion and consensus between different mods. Scans Daily has a "Three Strikes and You're Out" policy on warnings, and on your third strike you will be permanently banned from the community. First and second warnings will expire after 6 months, at which point you will have earned yourself a fresh start. These warnings will be posted publicly. 1 – First Strike. This is the lowest level of official warning; it will not be used unless there are multiple or extreme infractions of the community rules. Identified by the following text: "This is your FIRST OFFICIAL WARNING. Please note that if you receive two further warnings you will lose the ability to post on this community." 2 – Second Strike. This may follow a First Strike upon further infractions. Members receiving a second warning are suspended from Scans Daily for fourteen days. Identified by the following text: "This is your SECOND OFFICIAL WARNING. This is what they call a "second strike" and you are now suspended from the community for the next fourteen days, after which you will be allowed to return. Please note that if you receive one further warning you will lose the ability to post on this community." 3 – Third Strike. This leads to the ultimate sanction: banning. If a poster has consistently or egregiously ignored the rules of Scans Daily, they will be permanently banned. IP addresses of former members are logged, and attempts to sneak around the ban using a new username will lead to reports being filed with Abuse, as this is a violation of the Terms of Service. Identified by the following text: "This is your THIRD STRIKE. You have now been banned from Scans Daily." Though the moderators have these tools at our disposal, we do not wish to actually have cause to use them. Mods will take appropriate steps to resolve issues without resorting to the warning system. Reminders. Please note that official warnings will all carry the above text. However, a moderator may issue a "Mod Note" when there is a minor infraction of the rules or cause for concern. If a mod tells or asks you to do something, that is not the same as being given an official warning, which will always be identified as above. The moderator will simply step in to remind the member of the rule being broken. No official sanction will be taken. The mods reserve the right to issue a Strike or extended suspension period of any level without issuing a First Strike or Reminder if the offense is deemed to be severe enough. ADMINISTRIVIA.
