Aya shook his head. “That’s impossible. Men can’t get pregnant.”

“Well, he did land in all those weird chemicals at Masafumi’s place,” Yohji observed.

Schuldig grinned and offered Farfarello another Pocky stick. “Serves the brat right, surfing pornographic fanfic when he’s supposed to be working.”

“The old lady was a nice touch.”

Some while ago, I learned that time is far more circular than linear, that it spirals around like a whirlpool, sucking in the lives of those foolish enough to believe in its constancy.

Once upon a time we imagined we were free.

You’re never free from time.

I swore I would never set foot upon these grounds again, but there is unfinished business to attend to. He is there, and he is waiting.

But I know he’s not expecting me.

Gunfire rang out below, and Schuldig hit the deck.

Nagi watched open-mouthed as a singularly large mecha landed on the building next door. “Crawford…?”

“Steady, men.”

Overcome with curiosity, Schuldig returned to the window. “Holy hell, is that Chuck Norris?”

Farfarello considered the mayhem below. “My money’s on Godzilla.”

Brad Crawford smirked and adjusted his glasses with a flash. “Mine’s on Rogers. But it may take a while…”

By the time they’re done, he is willing to say anything, do anything, just to be left alone.

They have broken down his defenses, shattered his sense of self, rearranged everything that he was to better suit their needs.

Had he always heard voices in his head? He’s not sure anymore. But if they ask, he will say “yes” because he thinks that’s the answer they’ll want to hear.

On the surface, he is ready to agree to anything.

Deep within his heart, however, dwells the deathless hope that one day he will never have to answer to them again.

She didn’t remember who she used to be, when she was his whole world.

This new person, this new woman, accepted the reality she was given because she had no other history.

Doesn’t mean she liked it. Deep down, she sensed there was something wrong, very wrong. There were all these people acting like they knew her, or knew of her, at any rate, and one man frantically begging her to remember him. To remember her.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “But I can’t possibly be the person you think I was…

I never had a brother.”

“For the love of – who ARE these people!??” He stares, dumbstruck, at the hit counter going crazy. Anime characters and those who love them are moving in and taking over at record speed, and he wonders for one terrible moment if he can handle all this.

 

“I don’t know, honey, but they sent you these.”

 

He looks up at his wife. She’s holding two dozen red roses.

 

“The card says, Thank you, Squeaky, for all that you do! It’s not signed.” She smiles, then stares at the tiny envelope. “Odd…”

 

“What?”

 

“Koneko no Sumu Ie – this florist is in Japan…”
