One Perfect Moment: Captain America speaks the Truth.
Greetings True Believers! Captain America is a character that practically made of perfect moments. Everyone knows that Cap has the secret mutant power of the "Inspirational Speech" Because of it, he rallies armies, Gods follow him into battle, enemies become friends and he teaches whole generations of heroes.

These scans have what I consider the "The Speech" which totally defines Steve Rogers and what he stands for. (What we should all stand for.) It's from Amazing Spider-Man #537, during the Civil War event. Peter has just switched sides and he's screwed up the fight, putting his family in danger and what people are saying about him. So he asks Cap a very important question.

Cap saves the day with pastry
Well, this time the game has put me in a good mood, and I have to share my joy. So here's a bizarre little moment of classic Marvel for you all.

Sometimes, those old Hostess ads were really weird.

What If...? #114 Daddy Doom
Given that it's Doom week and I've kinda wanted to post this for some time and it also has cross dimensional spawn and fun What if ness all packed into one I bring scans daily 10 pages (from a 32 page comic) about What if...the people who were abducted by the Beyonder stayed on Battleworld for 25 years and had to co-exist, unable to return home to Earth?

It's also one of my favorite if not THE one What If I've always wanted to see continued, especially given that it's ending lends itself to that...

Or: "Different Universe, Same Love-Life Problem."

I wanted to post this for two reasons: 1) MA!Hank and Jan are adorable, and 2) giant ants.

616? We don't need no steekin' 616!
Hey guys! This is my first time sharing comics at the new S_D so I'm really excited! I thought I'd share a little bit of the Marvel Adventures Avengers. It may be marketed to kids, but it's got snark, it's got action and it's got some pretty good characterization and minimal angst, which is my kind of comic. I'd especially recommend it to those who aren't exactly thrilled with current 616!canon. I know I like it more.

Dial-uppers might not be happy. There's only a pair of images, but they're sorta big. )

Captain America's Flagpole

An epic post that had immensely brightened my day, shortly before the original base was kicked in, was the post with sexy scans of Steve Rogers where the bulge was prominent. Comment threads after comment threads of oh nom nom nom... Please post again?

Conversation With A Dead Person

Aka When Stevie Was Dead: Epilogue.  Argh, there's more?  Well, kinda.  After my post of recent myth stuff, I thought about posting something from the current Thor series that got lost in the shuffle, and this sprang to mind since it relates to the death of Captain America:  in #11, Thor attempts to summon Cap's spirit.

Four scans from Captain America #50 (thanks to a fluke, Marvel gets to do an issue #50 and an issue #600 back-to-back).

Gee, our light-hearted adventures got gruesome all of a sudden

Woof. VENUS started out as a chipper romance comics, playing up the glamor angle with its star literally being Venus, Goddess of Love. Then it got into science-fiction and then outright horror (That second cover is by none other than Bill Everett) at the end. This happened quite a bit to titles after WW II ended and super-heroes fell away.

When Stevie Was Dead: Part I: Heroes Divided, Villains United

In the Great Exodus from Livejournal to our current homeland, many a precious memory was lost; among them, the entirety of the "The Death of Captain America" mega-arc.  Since that was probably the most widely-publicized comics storyline of the decade, not to mention one of the best, I decided to get around to reposting the thing for posterity.

Material taken from Captain America v.5 #22-25.

"We surrender! Just keep that sidekick away from us!"

The kid sidekicks of Golden Age comics are a genre convention that seems indefensible today. A grown man putting on a costume and going out to fight criminals (sometimes with super-powers but most often with just fists) can be accepted as the basic premise. But for the same guy to bring along a minor (usually shown as about fourteen or fifteen, often clearly younger)into mortal danger is hard to defend. Despite all the training and preparation, taking a kid up against armed gangsters seems like an unacceptable practice from today's viewpoint.

Except for Bucky. Say he was fifteen when he first became Captain America's partner. The truth is that an awful lot of underage boys got into the armed forces in WW II. There was intense patriotic fervor, and computer background checks were not even dreamed of. It was much easier to fake an ID back then, and the demand for manpower led to many recruits getting only a cursory check before being put into training. "If you can walk up to the draft board under your own steam, they'll take you."Not having the Super-Soldier serum or an indestructible shield, Bucky was a tough egg anyway. Did he grow up in the slums, fighting among street gangs? Once he put on that costume and went up against Japanese and German troops (not to mention various mad scientists, masked villains, monsters and fiends), Bucky had no reluctance against using a little equalizer.

Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #4
Ok... We all love the Marvel Adventures line of comics.

But there was a time not that long ago when Marvel Adventures (originally called Marvel Age) was completely superfluous essentially consisting of lame retelling of old Lee/Ditko stories modern art.

Then something amazing happened.

The exact moment Marvel Adventures became awesome )

Thorm!
Because as a starting point for hooking up 2 characters go, "storm deities living in New York" makes a heck of a lot more sense than "two black Africans who have met maybe twice".

Marvel Adventures #35
Marvel Adventures Avengers is always awesome... Plus it is a scientific fact that any comic book can be improved by the presence of Batroc.
