Hakkai stepped into the clearing, where a great fortress once stood, and suppressed a shiver. He felt surprisingly cold despite the warm midsummer air.

This was where it all began; Kanan’s death, and Hakkai’s thirst for vengeance, which ultimately led to his damnation. He made a promise to himself to confront this place – to put old demons at rest. He needed to do this, despite Sanzo’s disagreement.

Free of all, bound by nothing; you live your life simply as it is

“I’m free,” he whispered, feeling the shackles of his past lifting. It was time to live his life again.

“Sanzo,” whined Goku, “you promised.”

“I did no such thing,” snapped Sanzo

“Sanzo, it’s not nice to break promises,” said Hakkai, who had been watching this interaction between the two for some time now.

“What did you promise him anyway, Monk?” asked Gojyo.

“Sanzo promised to take me to the village festival. He was gonna buy me all kinds of food that’s only sold there. Then he was going to enter in a shooting contest and win a giant stuff bear for me,” explained Goku.

Both Hakkai and Gojyo deadpan as Sanzo yelled, “You’ve made that whole damn thing up!”

Title: Interrupted Silence

Sanzo was enjoying the silence for once. He sat on the front porch, a cup of tea in his hand and a bento box beside him.

“Oi, Sanzo, what’s in the box?” Goku bounded outside and opened the box without permission. “Oh man, there’s eggrolls!”

Gojyo also appeared. “Hey, I get dibs on the dumplings and fried octopus.”

Sanzo frowned, but allowed the two to argue over his lunch. At least he still had his tea.

“This is wonderful tea, Sanzo,” stated Hakkai.

Sanzo pulled out his gun. “Who said you guys can come out here. Die, all of you!”

“What the hell were you thinking?!” snapped Sanzo.

Hakkai shrugged, or as much as he could with all the bandages wrapped around him.

“You can’t take off your limiters,” scolded Sanzo. “The chances of you going berserk are much greater here.”

Hakkai remembered the blood soaking his hands, the tearing of tender flesh, and the terrifying feeling of enjoying the destruction.

“I won’t hesitate next time,” Sanzo said coldly, “to pull the trigger.”

The corners of Hakkai’s lips twisted into a smile, insanity glinted behind his eyes. “I believe that would be an act of mercy, don’t you think, Sanzo?”

Title: First Kiss

Tenpou knew about this new general joining his rank for a month now, except he hadn’t made any attempt to meet him. After receiving countless complaints about how reckless this general was, Tenpou became curious. That curiosity was what brought him searching for Kenren at the sakura tree.

“Field Marshall Tenpou!” shouted Kenren from his perch in the tree. “I was wondering when we would meet.”

“Are you disappointed?” asked Tenpou.

Kenren jumped down from his perch, bringing sakura blossoms down around them. “On the contrary,” he said as he leaned forward and captured Tenpou’s lips in their first kiss.

Goku was on a mission. It wasn’t that Goku didn’t want to do what Sanzo had asked, but there were more interesting things to do in town.

Goku figured Sanzo wouldn’t mind if Goku ordered a bowl of soba noodles – or five. He couldn’t resist buying two dozen meat buns as he passed by. In fact, Goku knew Sanzo wouldn’t care if he brought a bag of red apples too.

Excited, Goku returned back to Sanzo, who frowned as he looked into the bag. “Where are my smokes?”

After a smack on the head, Goku was still on a mission.

Title: Cup of Tea

“Hakkai, can you make me some more soup?” hollered Goku.

“I want some soup too, bring me mine first,” cried Gojyo

Unable to watch Hakkai dart between the rooms nonstop, Sanzo retreated into his room. After a while, Sanzo realized it was too quiet, and decided to investigate. He soon found Hakkai, resting on the couch, looking a little pale. Frowning, he went and brought Hakkai tea.

Surprised, Hakkai took the offered cup. “Thank you.”

Sanzo scowled. “Don’t read too much into it. If you get sick, I’m not going to take care of you, the monkey, and the kappa.”

Author's Notes: I haven't written anything with Hakuryu, so here is my attempt.

“Damn it, Hakkai!” Gojyo yelled as he gripped the side of jeep as it veered sharply off the road and into the forest.

Everyone held on as they drove at a high velocity through the forest until Hakuryu decided to stop, transform, and dump the passengers unceremoniously on the ground at a particular sunny spot.

“Explain what happened before I start shooting,” demanded Sanzo.

“I believe Hakuryu found a nice picnic location,” replied Hakkai, rubbing his sore back.

Sanzo jerked back as he received pleading looks from both Hakuryu and Goku. He didn’t stand a chance. “Fine.”

Goku cheered, “Picnic!”

Title: Don't Wait Up

“Don’t wait up,” Gojyo said as he hit the night life. However, just as he was enjoying himself with several wrenches, the bars started to close.

“What bar closes at 2 A.M.?!” Grumbling, Gojyo headed back.

As Gojyo walked, he was surprise to spot Hakkai leaning against the bridge, looking out into stream.

“Oy, Hakkai, what are you doing up?”

“I couldn’t sleep, so I thought I’ll take a walk.”

Damn, thought Gojyo guiltily. He easily guessed that Hakkai was waiting for him.

“C’mon, I got some booze that we could share,” Gojyo said, slinging an arm around Hakkai’s shoulders.

Title: The Star of War

The night was clear, even beautiful with all the stars shining brilliantly. Homura searched the sky for the red star, the blood star, his star, and found it glowing dimly, which troubled him. Everything he’d carefully plan these years would come into fruittation today. The war star should be outshining all – unless…

Homura stopped in his thought. “You two should be resting.”

“The same could be said about you,” said Shien as he and Zenon emerged from the shadows.

“Don’t tell me you’re worried about today’s battle,” snorted Zenon.

Homura gazed upon the war star again. “No, today we’ll prevail.” 

Title: Perchance to Dream

“Ne, Tempi, can I barrow this book,” cried Goku. They were gathered in Tenpou’s study, supposedly helping him clean.

“You can’t read,” pointed Kenren

Angry, Goku swung his chains, hitting Kenren, which caused him to howl in pain before chasing Goku around the study.

“I can’t finish these manuscripts with all this noise,” grumbled Konzen.

Tenpou only chuckled.

At precisely 2 A.M., three men, in three different rooms, sat straight up in bed.

“I would never grow a mullet,” vowed Hakkai.

“Damn, I look good in leather,” said Gojyo.

“Nothing’s changed in 500 years,” sighed Sanzo.

Goku remained obliviously asleep. 

Title: Caught

“You need to pull the skin gently back,” instructed Hakkai

Goku concentrated. “Like that?”

Hakkai looked and nodded. “Now, you need to rub this oil all over.” Goku complied. “Then place your hand here at the entrance.”

Goku wiggled his fingers through the entrance. “Eww, it’s wet.”

Suddenly there was noise outside the door, and both Sanzo and Gojyo burst in.

“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TWO DOING?!” Gojyo shouted, voice cracking.

Goku blinked innocently. “Hakkai is showing me how to prepare hen.”

“IN TWO IN THE MORNING?!”

Sanzo pinched the bridge of his nose. “I’m going back to bed.”

Gojyo laughed. “It’s more like Kougaiji and co. doesn’t want to lose.”

“This isn’t a good time,” said Goku. “We haven’t eaten yet.”

“Enough!” shouted Kougaiji. “Surrender the sacred scroll, now!”

Sanzo looked bored. “Tch, you talk too much.”

The fight began and went well into the night until there were two left fighting. The rest watched wearily from their respected corners.

“Goku,” shouted Gojyo, “Give it a rest already! It’s 2 A.M.; time to go!”

“Lrin,” called Kougaiji. “It’s past your bedtime. We can fight again later today.”

Author's Notes: Okonomiyaki is sometimes called 'Japanese Pancakes' and is made of flour, water, cabbage/veggie, eggs, and meat; fried and flipped like pancakes.

“Sanzo, remember the time when we had okonomiyaki.”

“You damn monkey,” snapped Gojyo. “Stop talking like you hadn’t had any okonomiyaki for years. That was last week.”

“Sanzo, remember the time Hakkia let me flip the okonomiyaki and it landed on your head. I never got to taste it.”

“Hey! I nearly got shot because of you.”

“Shut up,” said Sanzo from behind the newspaper. “That was only a couple days ago, if you care to use that monkey brain of yours.”

Hakkai appeared, carrying a bag. “Good news everyone! I bought enough ingredients to make okonomiyaki tonight.”

“SHUT UP!”

Hakkai never liked the rain, even before that dreaded day where he lost her. But she loved the rain. He remembered those long rainy days where Kana sat near the window and would be entertained for hours just watching the rain drops fall. He remembered joining her, curling up together, and being in peace. Hakkai never liked the rain, but it was an opportunity to be with Kana.

“Are you done having your nostalgic moment?”

“Yes, Sanzo.”

“Then get your ass back into bed.”

Hakkai smiled when he felt strong arms around him, pulling him back to his present lover.
