quicklog, TWD: graham + clem + shane
Who: Graham, Clem. (With Shane later)
What: Graham to the rescue~
Where: TWD.
When: Nowish.
Warnings/Rating: Probs violence, cursing, etc.

With matters sorted out, Graham headed for the zombie door-- third time's a charm, yeah? Whatever the hell that meant. He wasn't worried. He wasn't scared. He wasn't much of anything, truth be told. Numb. He was numb, but numb wasn't all that bad. It was comfortable. And having something to focus on that had nothing to do with Lore, that helped. He had a goal, a purpose: find Clem and Shane. Help them get out. What happened after didn't matter, first they had to get there.

He was dressed real simple, and he packed only essentials. Ammo, a change of clothes for Clem (and Shane too, in case), extra food and water, along with other various supplies. His gun was in his holster and a machete was strapped to his chest under his jacket; he'd reach for that first. And, all prepared, in he went. Shane's map and his own knowledge weren't much to go off of, but for Graham it was enough. He'd manage. He remembered where the prison was, knew he could find it all right, and from there he had the map. Might take some time, but he'd get there.

This time, he was alone.

Maybe he could've fallen back on old habits, but he'd made Lore a promise. No more, he said, and he wasn't about to go back on his word. It had to mean something. Her coming back, then leaving all over again, it couldn't be for nothing. A promise was a promise, yeah? So this was him, trying to let her go.

Shane hadn't been joking when he said the place was swamped, Graham found that out real fast. It was coming on nightfall by the time he reached the town, but the dead roamed the streets; he heard them before he saw them. He was quiet, careful, keeping out of sight while he scoped out the area and tried to work out his next step. There were too many to kill, even with the now bloodstained machete against his chest; it'd draw too much attention anyway. Best to see if he could keep behind the houses, find a way in round back. Less to deal with that way, maybe, and if he killed the zombies quick it might be okay.

They'd checked all the damn doors on the main street of the town they were holed up in, and none opened out into the hotel. That day'd been real hard, after getting away from the prison and nearly dying more times than Clem could count, there'd been a whole lot of nothing but more rotting things.

The pharmacy'd looked empty enough, though, considering. A few walkers wandering inside, and Shane should have been able to take them easy, but turned out there was more than some. Running upstairs, that had been about surviving. Staying up there, it had been about the same. The door to the first level had been wide open, but the storage level above had been locked solid, and they'd found a couple in bed, pills emptied out on the nightstand and a knife on the mattress, one they'd used once they were numb. Dead folk that weren't walking around, and she wondered if it wasn't better that way, ending it your ownself instead of waiting to become like the things downstairs.

And them things downstairs, they were everywhere. Moving around day and night, and it wasn't like the prison, where the walls were thick. Every noise carried up into that townhouse above the pharmacy, even though they holed themselves up on the highest level.

The closets up there were empty, and the place was used for storing, not living. But it was clean enough, and that high-up the smell didn't carry so bad when Clem opened the windows. There was one bed, now those dead folks had been shoved out the window to splat below. Bedsheets tossed out too, and there were cleaning supplies. It was silly some, but Clem cleaned the Southern Baptist Hell out of that room, and it was worth the soreness in her be'slinged arm. Least the room felt clean, even if she didn't.

Truth was, they'd been running low on every damn thing. Wasn't much water left, and getting out to go on a run wasn't real wise, but they didn't have have much of a choice. If Graham didn't show real soon, they weren't ever seeing the back of this place anyway, and so Shane had gone and climbed out the window and onto the roof.

That was a whole two days earlier.

Worried as could b, she'd stopped feeling guilty over anything at all, and she'd started just being angry at every damn thing. Plaid shirt and shimmery micro-mini, and she didn't say a whole lot, too fussed for even hollering at the walls.

She just opened the window and sat on the ledge, like jumping was looking better and better each day, because it was.

Graham was glad for the map, because even in the dimming light he could figure out where the pharmacy was in relation to where he was without having to guess much. Even if he managed to get to it, then get inside, they'd have to get out without being torn apart. Too much movement and every single dead thing would be coming their way, yeah? And he figured Clem wasn't going to be much help with fighting, and that just left him and Shane. Two weren't enough. If they could clear a path... maybe. Or lure the bulk of them away, somehow. Thin the herd some.

First thing's first; he had to get to the damn building. He slid the rifle off his shoulder and aimed, but it wasn't to shoot. No, he was trying to get a look through the scope. Not as good as binoculars but it'd do. And that was how he managed to catch the window opening, somebody sitting out in the ledge. Dead folk didn't do that. Had to be them, he figured, but there was a lot of shuffling zombies between him and the building. Could he get onto the roof, climb into the window from there?

Maybe.

He slung the rifle back over his shoulder, exhaled, and went round the nearest building. He kept to the side, quiet as could be, listening to the moaning and the shuffling to determine whether or not he'd meet a dead thing right around the corner. Most of them seemed to be out in the street, but some wandered out onto the grass and into the greenery beyond. He killed them quick, no guns, and after each one he crouched real low and waited. Breath held, eyes wide, half expecting the horde to come his way and then he'd have to lead them off before finding a way to circle back. But they kept on shuffling, up and down the street, least for now. But he had something like an idea; maybe it was nothing, but it was a worth a shot. Not like he cared a lick anyway.

Not knowing Shane had done something similar, Graham cut open one of the dead folk with his machete and reached inside. He smeared blood all over his jacket, jeans too, on his hands and face, thinking maybe if he smelled a little like the rest of them it lessened the risk some. He didn't coat himself in guts and gristle, no, even though he wouldn't have minded that. Getting dirty didn't bother him none.

Long as he moved slow, none of the dead seemed much interested in him. Course he was still slinking around the back, between buildings; it might not work so well out on the street. But he got to the pharmacy, pressed up alongside the building, and he thought some. Either he went in and took his chances with however many dead folk were inside, or he tried scaling the building. If he fell, he was done for.

Hell with it. He set the rifle down, because the backpack was enough and he had two weapons on him already; extra weight would just screw him over. Once that was done he steeled himself, wiped his hands clean as best he could, and hauled himself up onto the first window ledge. That got some attention, but Graham didn't look back. He didn't look down. He didn't put much faith in God these days, but he prayed anyway.

Once he got a little closer to the roof, he whistled. Just once; to let Clem know he was coming, if she could hear. Dead folk didn't whistle, he thought.

Clem didn't see him right off. She was too busy fretting about dumb Shane being gone. She wasn't even fretting over her water nearly being drained, or about the fact that she was going to be dead as could be if someone didn't show soon. She knew Graham would try to come, on account of Shane asking. She knew Shane would try to get on back, because that was just the kind of thing that damn man did. Didn't mean anyone would make it, because the world outside that window looked like an ocean of things gone dead, and she was angry at herself for putting them all there, in the middle of it.

Dumb girl, romanticizing things that weren't never meant to be romanticized.

She didn't see any movement outside, but it would be real hard to see a thing with the dead moving jerky like they did. All she knew was she didn't want to be like one of them things, and she knew she might have to think on that eventually, but not yet. Her arm hurt like burning, and she was thirsty from conserving what water was left, lips all cracking and her hair dry as straw, but she wasn't in any real danger yet, not long as the doors held. As for being hungry, the smell could turn anyone off food, so that was a lucky thing some.

She'd just started moving away from the window when she heard the whistle. Like Shane knocking on the bars of the cell, it stood out as something dead folk didn't do, and she went right on back and leaned out. Hands on the sill, and her upper body out in the Atlanta sun, and she looked and listened, waiting to see if the sound repeated.

If it wasn't for her bad shoulder, she could climb on out to the ledge outside her window, the overhang of the floor down below, but no way she was risking that without someone to help her if she got stuck. And could be anyone out there whistling. Last time here had taught her that some of the folks in this place, the living, had gone as a bad as the the dead things.

But she caught sight of him then.

The man looked as bad as Shane when he'd come to the prison, and she near gagged at the remembering. She hated this damn place, but she went back to the bed and grabbed the sheets all tied up in a rope ladder that Shane fashioned from near every cloth thing in the storage closet. It was tied real good to the foot of the four-poster bed, and she tossed it out the window to make climbing easier if Graham needed.

They were going to waste some water on getting them guts off him, whether the fool man liked it or not.

It was funny; he should've been afraid. Normal people'd be afraid. All those dead down below, just waiting for him to lose his grip or step wrong so he'd go tumbling, and if he did, Graham knew the chances of him getting back up weren't good. They'd be on him in a second. But he wasn't afraid, not even when he thought of Joy and Jake back out in the normal world. They made him determined, gave him focus, but they didn't make him feel fear. Maybe he was still numb some from Lore leaving like she had. Maybe he'd just been in this damn place too much to feel anything while he was here.

Those things didn't matter. What did matter was that he didn't fall. He didn't slip. He was still breathing, he wasn't weak or tired or thirsty, and not even the stench he was coated in bothered him any.

He whistled again, just for good measure. And then he just focused on making it up, wincing a little at the strain it was putting on his upper body; he'd feel that tomorrow, sure as hell. The sheet-rope-ladder made him smile, strange as that was, and he was more than willing to use it to make the climb a little easier. He didn't say a thing, since he figured Clem (or Shane) wouldn't throw down help for just anybody. Had to know it was him. Bloody, dirty, and not smelling all that great, Graham hauled himself up into the ledge and slid his backpack off, tossed it onto the floor.

"Hey." He exhaled in relief when his feet touched the ground. "Got water in there. Clothes, too." He gestured to the bag, but his gaze was elsewhere. On Clem, around the room, then back to her. "Where's Shane? You holding up okay?"

She heard the second whistle clearer than the first, on account of she was listening for it now. She saw the blanket rope go taut with weight, and she stepped back as Graham neared the sill. Man smelled just awful, and she decided every damn person she knew was going to shower twice a damn day if they made it home. She'd considered, real briefly, going back to school and finishing that EMT degree that never did happen when she'd gone back young. But no way was she spending time around dead and dying folks ever again, not after all this stink.

She watched Graham's backpack hit the floor, and she would have hugged the fool man if he wasn't covered in filth. "You take that shirt off, and you put it out on the ledge. Right now, Graham Ross," she said, pointing to where the ledge was, in case he'd forgot the window he just crawled into. She didn't let Shane drag guts inside, and he wasn't doing it neither.

But she'd forget near anything for water. She didn't go for the backpack he motioned at. Instead, she turned and took up one of the two small cups of water she sitting out, and she sipped from one. It was wasting the afternoon ration, and maybe she should have avoided it, but she was so damn thirsty. Little bit left, and she grabbed some paper towels and handed him the dregs of the cup to clean up some.

Truth was, she didn't want to say about Shane, because saying made it real, and if he looked worried then she wouldn't be able to lie to herself so good.

She sat on the bed, arm slung up in a yellow towel and cradled against Shane's plaid shirt, now that she'd tucked her elbow back into the sling. "He went out a few days ago. Ain't been back," she finally admitted. "Said he'd just be gone a while."

She knew it sounded real bad.

"I tried messaging. Didn't hear a thing, and he didn't message me any." She knew Shane hadn't messaged Graham, or the man wouldn't be asking.

After the hell he'd put her through, Graham wasn't expecting a hug or anything of the sort. But the first words out of her mouth were to take his shirt off, like being all bloody really mattered just then, and that was so damn familiar that he almost laughed. Course Clem would want him to clean up. Even in a place like this, some things never changed.

"Ain't that bad." Which wasn't entirely true, but whatever. He set down the machete and his gun first, holsters and all, and then he did just as she asked; shirt unbuttoned and draped over the ledge. Didn't bother him none. The cup of water and paper towels earned her a raise of his eyebrows, but instead of arguing he just shook his head. It wasn't much, but at least he could get most of the blood off his skin.

Since Shane was obviously not in the room, Graham figured he was out on a run. No big deal. But a few days, that was worrisome. He looked up, brow furrowed, and for a second there was concern in his eyes.

But it wouldn't do to worry Clem, so he blinked it away.

"He'll be back." Real sure, like he knew for a fact. "Brought you a change of clothes."

"It's worse than that bad," she said of that shirt and the way he stunk, and no way was she changing her mind. He wasn't covered near as bad as Shane had been, but it was still real terrible. "Shane made me do that to get out of the prison, cover myself in guts, and I almost rather be ate by one of those festering things. Might go with that option if it comes to it again." Which was a damn lie, but she said it like she meant every word, chin up and defiant, even bone dry and hurting like she was. Plain truth was she was too inclined to survive, and she'd make a fuss, but she'd do what it took.

But he obliged, and she sat and watched the red come off his skin. He said there were clothes, and she figured that was better to fix on than Shane just yet. She leaned forward and reached for that bag with her good arm, and she pulled a plain old white shirt out and slipped her own plaid one off, after freeing herself of the sling and wincing five or six times as she got the new shirt on. She threw him the one she'd been wearing. "It's Shane's. You ain't getting that ruined thing on the ledge back."

Which brought them right on back to the main thing worrying her. "Man's been up my ass constant since he thought something bit me outside the prison. He knows I ain't got enough water to last him being gone this long. No point lying to me, honey, though it's real kind of you to try."

She motioned to the window. "It's real bad out there."

He knew real well that Clem was being dramatic, because far as he knew she didn't have a death wish and people'd do all sorts of things to survive. She might not like it, being covered in the insides of dead folk, but she'd do it if she had to. Graham shrugged. "Not pretty, but it's smart. 'Specially when the streets are full of the damn things. Can always shower when we're home," he pointed out mildly. First time around, he'd probably have been sick with the stench that he surrounded him in. Now, though, it didn't bother him. Third time here had numbed a lot of things for him. He kept on scrubbing off what red he could with the water and paper towels, wiped himself off too, and he watched her struggle her way out of her old shirt and into the new one. He'd have offered help, if he thought she'd be inclined to take it.

"Thanks." Clothes were clothes, yeah? He caught the shirt she threw him, no trouble at all. As for Shane, Graham didn't want to think about him not coming back. But he trusted his best friend more than anything, and he knew he was capable. If he could make it back, he would. Maybe, though, the man was in trouble. Should he go looking? He could, but what if he didn't come back either; Clem'd be as good as dead then. "Ain't lying," he said. "I know Shane. None of that means he ain't coming back."

A few hours, maybe. Graham'd give it a few hours and then go looking. He remembered, too, that he had to tell Shane about his brother. Joey. "I know." It was bad, he couldn't deny that, and he pulled on the shirt while he looked out the window. "Give it a little more time, yeah? Then we can think about going on after him."

"Don't you go telling me the reasons why it's smart, honey. I know all them reasons, and I hate it all the same," she said, unapologetically petulant. It was probably a good thing; if she was being sweet some it might mean the world was ending. "You really think we're making it home?" she asked, on account of him sounding so sure, and she wasn't sure any. "Days locked in that prison cell, and I thought for sure I wasn't never going home. Then we were stuck in this hut for days, and the dead things kept banging on every damn thing, and the whole place shook. We didn't have a thing much, and stupid Shane wasted most of the water on me wanting to be clean again. Then we got here, and we thought things would be fine, but we were wrong again, and that herd ain't thinned in days," she said, motioning to the window at his back.

Maybe he was right about Shane being real competent, though. "If he weren't in trouble, he would have let me know he was holed up somewhere," she countered. Didn't mean he wasn't coming back, but meant he'd run into something and lost his journal at the very least. A little more time, though, she figured they could do that.

"You sit on down and tell me how the baby was when you left," she said with a pat to the bed, after a few minutes of deciding whether she gave a damn about pretending she didn't care any. "Jake's been real terrible to Jack," she added. She felt sorry for dragging Jack into this mess, and Jake was acting like some spoiled thing. As a spoiled thing herself, she knew the signs real well.

Graham just shrugged. Her petulance was normal, too sweet and he would've wondered if maybe being here too long had gotten to her some. As for making it home he couldn't be sure, but one thing he was sure of was that he didn't want to die out here. Couldn't end like this. No, he felt like maybe he was meant to survive, they all were, because dying now would be real pointless. All for nothing, and numb as he was he couldn't accept that. "Yeah," he said, after listening to all the odds stacked up against them. "You and Shane, you didn't make it through all that just to die like this. And I didn't come here to die neither." He looked over his shoulder, out at the herd that didn't seem to be thinning none. Once Shane got back, somebody could go out and try to draw them away. Might mean splitting up but he could handle himself, he was real sure of that. Otherwise, they could try to sneak through. Fight when they had to and make a run for it.

He looked back at her. "If he's in trouble, he'll find a way out." Shane wasn't one to give up easy; he was a stubborn bastard. Had to be, Graham thought, to put up with him all this time. But either way he wasn't leaving his best friend out there, so it was just a matter of waiting now.

"She's real good," he said, sitting down beside Clem when she patted the bed. "Gets prettier every day. Penny's got her, but she likes people. Don't fuss much." They were fond, the words, and how he felt about that baby was written real clear all over his expression. But the mention of Jake brought in shadows, and he sighed. "Boy ain't talking to me. Jack said he was okay, wouldn't tell me much else." He paused, trying to decide whether he should bring up Lore. But what did it matter now? Wasn't like nobody knew what he'd wished for. "Lore came back," he said, tipping his head back to look up at the ceiling. "Think Jake saw her. Was wrong of me, wishing the dead alive."

She wasn't feeling sweet any. Truth was, she was angry as hornets. At herself, at this damn place, at wishing in general. All of it had her mad as bees, and that was better than her weeping any damn day. Meant she wasn't inclined to feel real hurt by anything between them in the past neither. Funny thing about this door, the way it made things not matter a whole lot. Took away all the stuff beyond surviving, and she knew that wasn't good any, even if it felt better some. It was the whole damn reason they'd had such a hard time remembering what living was, and she didn't want that all over.

"You always were a cocky thing, you fool man," she replied to his assurances that he wasn't come here to die. She exhaled hard, and she didn't move any as he looked out that window at the herd. She knew he was thinking on ways out, and truth was she believed he'd manage it. Somehow, the damn man was more competent here than out there, and wasn't that just the strangest thing? "Shane's had it harder this time, think on account of you not being here." It wasn't a guilting thing; her tone didn't sound blaming. She sounded surprised some, maybe. She knew him and Shane were real dependent on one another, but maybe she'd underestimated just how much.

She scoffed real obvious at the mention of Penny. Not a whole love lost between her and that woman when it came to the baby, but at least it meant the child would be real safe. "Penny took her off me for her own good. She'll keep her safe," she said, and she motioned to her journal, set aside mid-conversation with Jake. "Jack told him I was stuck here. Messaged me for the first time a month, that boy." She shook her head. Wasn't sure where a thing was going with Jake, but maybe growing up was something that needed to happen sometime soon. Her feelings were sore there, and it was plenty obvious in her tone and expression.

She didn't expect Graham to mention Lore all on his own, and she looked over at where he was sitting. She didn't bother trying not to look surprised; Clem never bothered with things like that. "You didn't wish her at Jake or me. That must have been someone else. I wished myself here, so wasn't me. Might be Jake wishing on his momma somehow," she suggested, though heck if she knew why the boy would do that. She quirked a brow at him. "What made you change your mind? Things go wrong?"

He didn't think he was cocky none, he just knew what he could do and what he couldn't. Helped that the real world stopped mattering in here, a wasteland populated by the dead; otherwise Graham figured talking wouldn't come so easily. Back home, Clem remembered hurt. There wasn't nothing else to distract from it. Here, though, survival mattered more than any damn thing and that created a kind of bond that didn't carry over the same. It was a kind of closeness, he remembered that from living together in this place for all that time before. It was why he'd come back, why he still felt drawn to this door. He worked better in here, but he didn't care enough to figure out why that was. He was tired of trying to understand himself, tired of trying to make himself understood. For a little while? He just wanted to be.

"Ain't cocky," he said, belatedly. "Just saying." But it surprised him, her saying that Shane had it harder this time. She wasn't trying to blame him, he knew that, but he felt guilty anyway. He felt guilty about a whole lot these days. "Haven't been there for him like I should. For a real long time, it was just us." Graham didn't know why he was saying it, the words just came out.

There wasn't anybody else to leave Joy with. Penny was family, and he trusted her, even if she had no right to take the baby from Clem like she had some claim on her. "That's what matters. Her being safe," he said with a shrug. And if none of them made it out, least she'd be looked after. As for Jake, he didn't know if the boy would ever forgive him. Maybe he'd spend the rest of his life trying and failing to make things up to him. But that didn't mean he was going to stop, just meant he'd need to get used to a whole lot of hurt and disappointment. "Never meant for things to go bad between you two. Know he's mad at me. Know he hates me. Didn't want to drag you into it."

Since he had no idea what Jake'd wished for, he assumed Lore was wholly his wish and his alone. If he saw her surprise, Graham didn't say a thing about it. "Might be. No way to know." Not like his son would tell him himself. As for what made him change his mind, he let out a long, long exhale. "Didn't start off that way. She said she couldn't stay, but I didn't want to hear it." He closed his eyes. "Longer I kept her with me, worse it got. Always thought things'd be good if she came back. Figured it'd fix everything. Truth is, I ruined a whole lot trying to hold onto somebody who never wanted to be held onto in the first damn place."

She noticed his return quip was real belated, but she didn't ask why. Could be a thousand reasons, but she chalked it up to him thinking on the mess outside. Before this, she'd probably think it had something to do with her. She would have made it real personal, when she didn't think it really was any. Difference between then and now, and wishing on Valentine's Day and all those days alone in a cell after, they'd got through to her the way being home again and young hadn't. Hard to explain why, but it was different now, and all that bile that'd been burning a hole in her middle wasn't there no more. She just wanted to survive this damn stinking mess and go on home.

He said he hadn't been there for Shane, and she didn't argue with him. "Too caught up in our own woes, sugar." Because she wasn't innocent in that whole damn mess, and she knew it. "Man had to wish us home from our damn selfish issues. Says something," she said, and she knew she was real selfish, but usually she could see it clearer than she'd seen this.

Clem agreed about Joy being good off with Penny; she nodded. Wasn't arguing about that, and she couldn't think on anybody that would be better if they couldn't get out of this place for a good long while, if ever. But Jake, that made her shake her head. "Angry at the boy, and you won't hear me saying much that's nice. Whatever you said, it don't matter. The child didn't even let me explain. I'd do anything for that boy, and he cut me dead like I didn't matter more than the day's garbage. That ain't nice, and it kind." There was hurting behind her anger, and she shook her head a second later. "Told him I'd make sure no one went back to the Tuxedo Park house if he'd take it. Don't know if he will, but better than him insisting he ain't got no place to go. He can't stay with Jack. I can already tell Jack's real aggravated about it."

She thought quiet a few seconds when he said Lore didn't want to be held onto. "Ain't true. I'm real sure Lore would have loved to live and be held onto, honey. Thing is, there's no holding onto folks that are gone. Wishing her back, it wasn't never going to change that." She reached over, and she squeezed his fingers some. Quick though, on account of the man still being filthy some, and then she wiped her fingertips on his shirt sleeve. "I wished to come back here. Sometimes we do fool things wanting the past back, but there's no getting it back, Graham. No matter how much we want it."

Being all torn up about things he couldn't change had worn him clear out. Graham felt like he could sleep for a week, but he'd gone from Lore going away to being surrounded by the undead with nothing in between; he'd let it all catch up with him once they were all out safe. "Yeah," he agreed, about being caught up in their own woes, because she was right. They'd been so wrapped up in their own selves that there wasn't much left over for Shane. "Should've seen it, but I didn't." Maybe he hadn't wanted to, or maybe he'd really been that damn blind. He hesitated, looking over at her with something troubled in his gaze. "His brother's dead. Shane's. Was gonna tell him when he got back." Wasn't anything the man could do about it in here, was his thinking, and he knew grief could mess people up; he didn't want Shane getting killed because of it.

No matter how angry Jake was at him, he shouldn't've have taken it out on his aunt. He could bear it, but her? She didn't deserve it none. "Know he's real angry and hurt, but that ain't your fault. You did no wrong by him. That's on me." He sighed again. "Shouldn't be treating you like he did." But he'd tried and tried to reach out to his son, only to get not a damn thing back. Figured it was best to wait until he got back to the land of the living before trying again. He did wonder where he and Shane'd go if Jake went to the house in Marvel, but he didn't say a thing about it. They'd figure something out. Always did. Penny could watch Joy until they got settled. "Yeah. Ain't Jack's responsibility, to look after somebody else's boy." He appreciated it, but of course the man might be aggravated some.

He shook his head. "Don't think Lore wanted to die. Course she'd have wanted to live. Mean she didn't want to be held onto... after. When she was gone." Graham opened his eyes, looked down when she squeezed his fingers. "She died and I didn't let her go. Everybody kept telling me the same thing. Can't get the past back, but I didn't want to hear it." He smiled, but it was a sad thing. "Guess some of us got to learn the hard way."

"No point fussing over things can't be changed," she said, easy as pie. She wasn't made for guilt. She didn't feel a whole lot of it, despite there being plenty of things she wouldn't mind changing in her past. But no point fixing on things, and maybe she'd forgot that out there. Or maybe she'd just let her feelings get all mixed up to the point where she plain stopped demanding things she needed, and men were fools, and hell if they'd ever figure a thing out on their owns. Shane told her plenty of times to talk plain, and she'd forgot a long while, until he'd got to hounding her about it constant.

But the mention of a dead brother, that was real troubling. "Telling him once we're out of here's best. Can't do a thing from here, and it might get his head on all wrong." Which wouldn't do anyone any good. But she was real glad it wasn't her job to do that telling. Shane loved his family, but she knew the man didn't see much of them. She figured it came from spending all his time with Graham, and barely knowing his own kin some.

"He's acting like me and my momma, spoiled as can be. If he wanted to go inheriting something from my folks, well, that wasn't the best thing. Figure he might listen, and I got enough money to get him someplace if he'd rather, or to get you and Shane something else if you don't want to come over where I'm at." She said it simple, and no expectations like in that diner over pancakes. She smiled some. "Jack's a good man, and I don't think he'd mind any, but he said something 'bout the woman he lives with getting aged down some. Sounds like he's in a real rough spot."

"Weren't ready to hear it, sugar. Means you loved her plenty. Ain't all bad." She squeezed his fingers once more, and then she let go. "Sorry she couldn't stay for you." She meant it. She didn't want her sister hanging 'round, but she figured he was happy as could be to have her back, however brief it had been.

That made him laugh. He did a whole lot of fussing over things that couldn't be changed, and it was a hard road to stopping. Maybe he could get there someday. Never thought he'd let go of Lore, after all, and he had, even if it felt like a part of himself being ripped away a second time. But everything she said, it made sense, and Graham nodded when she said it'd be best to tell Shane once they were out. "Yeah," he agreed. "Was what I thought, too. Didn't want him knowing while he was still here."

How Jake had ended up spoiled, he wasn't sure. His parents had doted on the boy, he knew, but he also knew his folks weren't a damn thing like the Murphys; was a difference between loving a child and spoiling them rotten. Maybe all that anger had something to do with it, too much and no way to handle it right. He'd known his son better as a kid than as an adult. But even now, he couldn't regret sending the boy back home. He regretting having to, but there was too good a chance that Jake would've ended up dead if he'd stayed with his father and he couldn't have lived with himself if that'd happened. "He might listen to you more than me." It surprised him, that Clem was willing to have him and Shane where she lived; it showed, too. "You'd let us stay with you?" From what he remembered of Jack, he seemed like a decent fellow. Graham got the feeling he didn't like him much, but if he'd listened to half of what Jake said, well, that wasn't surprising. Not like he minded; he was too old to care. "Aged down, huh? Don't sound like much fun."

He was quiet for a long stretch. "Think maybe people can love too much, sometimes." But he smiled a little when she squeezed his fingers again, and he brushed them against hers before she let go. "Got to say goodbye proper, at least," he said. "And I figure she went someplace better." He had to believe that, had to believe that she hadn't just disappeared and stopped existing completely.

Clem didn't think there was a thing wrong with being spoiled as could be, but wasn't any point shooting off your nose to spite your face. Not going to stay in a warm house, and sleeping in some store with a man he barely knew, that was the wrong kind of spoiled. Best to take the place and be spoiled while warm. Boy could hate them all where she could feel sure he was safe some. Not that she didn't think Jack was safe, because she trusted that man the same way she trusted anyone who'd been in that locker with them in zombies a year back. But Jack didn't love the boy, and Jake needed to be growing up now. Time to look at his options and pick the best damn one for his ownself, instead of doing whatever the heck this was he was doing.

"Not sure he'll listen, honey, but won't hurt a thing to try. Boy's already fussed at me," she said. That had hurt for a real good spell, but like everything else in here, it wasn't near as important.

His surprise at her offer made her chuckle some, and she adjusted her arm in the makeshift sling as she looked over at him. "Was miserable as could be on my own. No point in pretending I wasn't. Easier than trying to hint at Shane to come over all hours. That man's real terrible about hinting. It's a wonder either of you ever got women. Anyway, more folks in a house is better. I'll even tolerate all Shane's lovers without making any of them cry too hard," she offered, real nice and polite as could be.

"Still ain't sure about that whole loving thing, but just on account of it not being for me, that don't mean it wasn't for you and Lore." She smiled down at the brush of his fingers, because at least they weren't hollering at each other any. Not that hollering didn't have benefits some. "Think you had something the rest of us don't get, on account of loving too much. Means it hurts worse after, but bet you wouldn't change having it to spare yourself the pain. That's the kind of thing I do, honey, but not you." She wasn't sure she believed in any damn thing after this living, but it wouldn't help him to hear.

Jake could hate them all he wanted, sure, but him telling people he had no place to stay wasn't true; staying with a man he didn't know out of spite made no sense. Graham would keep his distance if that was what the boy wanted, but he had options. Had places go. The whole world wasn't against him. Maybe it felt that way but he had people who cared, yeah? Hell, Clem would do just about anything he wanted. Sooner or later, though, Jake would realize he had no reason to be mad at his aunt and he'd go putting all his anger back on his father. "Okay," he agreed. Not like he had much to offer, he still needed a damn job. Marvel, Gotham, didn't matter. Being a cop wasn't going to happen but maybe he could do security or something like it. Could look out for people who needed it, even though that might not pay so well. He'd figure it out.

More guilt stirred in his belly when she said she'd been miserable on her own, but he smiled some when she said they were terrible about hinting. "Real miracle," he said dryly. "If we ain't imposing, sure." He felt sure he could speak for Shane on this one. As for loving, right then it seemed more pain than anything. Just a whole lot of hurt and loss, but if he thought back, back, that wasn't true. Hadn't always been that way. "Maybe," he shrugged. "Wouldn't change it. Just wish it didn't hurt so much, is all."

Clem did angry real well, though, and Jake had made her mad as hell. No point denying it. She still loved the boy like breathing, but she was spiky as could be when it came to being done wrong. No other way to look at it; Jake had done her real wrong, never even asking her say in a thing. It was slut shaming some, and it made her mad as brambles. But she still loved the boy with every bit of her that had loved on Lore, and so she'd give him the house and see him safe if he'd take it. Money didn't matter a lick to her; she had more of it than she'd ever know what to do with over in Gotham.

She smiled some when he replied dry about it being a real miracle they had women any, him and Shane, and her chuckle was a low thing, quiet, under breathing. Man always had that dry sense of humor, and it was good to see it back, instead of whatever had taken its place since Fall. "Hush about imposing," she said, an exasperated look paired with the words. "You know I don't offer a thing 'less I mean it. I'd just get real aggravated and toss you out on your ear anyway. Any of Shane's women still staying? I never did ask, seeing as we were busying dying some."

She could just brush off all that talk of loving, like she did with Carson, but seemed wrong to do that with him, seeing as she'd seen how that felt, straight from a bottle. "Think it's balance, honey. Love more, and it hurts more when it's gone. Don't love a whole lot, and you don't get any hurting." She gave him a real clear look, like she knew the answer to what she was asking without ever asking, so much so that she didn't even need to phrase it as asking, not any. "You had a choice, falling hard or not, you'd do the same damn thing all over, Graham."

All Graham could do was hope that Jake got some sense and took what was being offered to him. Money hadn't ever mattered to him either, not in a while, but for different reasons; he'd just never needed a lot. Things were different now. He had Joy to think about, and even if they stayed with Clem and even if she had more money than she knew what to do with, well, he still wouldn't feel right not doing his part.

"Yeah, I forgot. You didn't want us there, you'd say." Somehow it was easier to smile out here, surrounded by the dead and with blood still under his fingernails. It felt a long, long way from everything real. As for 'Shane's women', he wrinkled his nose. "Evie was there," he said. Was she still at the house? He didn't know. "Don't think she'll be coming, if that's what you mean." Him, Shane, Clem, Evie and her kid-- yeah, he couldn't see that happening. It Elias enough to make him smile again, but it faded fast. Balance didn't help anything, because it was too late for that now and, anyway, he wouldn't have loved less even if he could go back. "Nothing to be done," he sighed. What was done was done.

Clem wasn't real sure about Jake's sense, but the boy was twisting things she said, and she wasn't real happy with it. But like every damn thing out there, in the world beyond this rotting place, it didn't matter a whole lot. She knew some about working to fill time, because she didn't need a penny, but she worked every damn night just to do something that wasn't sitting around. Might be different if she had folks living in, but working had gotten her through being alone, least at first, before Jake had come.

"Damn right I'd say," she agreed. Clem wasn't real good at martyring. She wasn't real good at being nice when she didn't mean it, neither. "You like her?" she asked of Evie, who she hadn't been real impressed with. But if Shane wanted Evie along, Clem wouldn't argue any. Couldn't promise to be nice to that wild woman with the real bad haircut, but she'd let Shane have her along, if that's what the man wanted. She questioned his sanity some, but who knew what that man was thinking half the time.

She grinned when he sighed all dramatic. "Quit that. World's ending. Can't go sighing when the world's ending." But her expression went serious some. "When we go out there, you're teaching me how to manage, you hear? I ain't staying up here, and I'm real done being useless."

He shrugged when she asked about Evie. "Ain't as crazy as I first thought she was," he said wryly. Truth be told, in the beginning Graham hadn't wanted a thing to do with the woman. He'd been real protective of Joy, still was, and what Clem'd told him hadn't made him all that inclined to be friends. But she wasn't crazy, least not the dangerous kind. She was like him, in a way, trying to go on after losing somebody she loved with a kid to take care of. "I like her all right. After Lore..." He frowned to himself. "After she left, we talked some." She was different, sure, but he didn't mind her.

Not sighing when the world was ending made no damn sense, and he shook his head as she grinned. "Think the world's already ended." But he went serious when she did, and he didn't answer right away; he looked out the window, down at the street, lost in thought. Made more sense to go looking for Shane on his own. Clem had her arm in a sling, and she wasn't like him, wasn't like Shane, killing didn't come easy.

But leaving her here came with its own risks. What if the dead somehow managed to get in? What if he and Shane didn't make it back?-- She'd be as good as dead then anyway.

"I hear," he said, finally, looking back at her. He just hoped it didn't come to that.

Graham wasn't real big on talking, so the real casual comment about him and Evie talking some, that made Clem lift a brow right on up. She wasn't a jealous woman by nature, because that would take feeling insecure some, and she only felt that after Halloween parties. But time had passed plenty, and she wasn't crying over any damn man just now, and the thought that both Graham and Shane might be interested in that real mousey woman with the bad hair, that was silly as could be. "She ain't pretty," she said, incredulous, and that was just vanity in the middle of rotting things. She'd never claimed to be nice. "Least Marina's real pretty, if old some."

But the world hadn't ended a lick, and she gave him a look that said as much. "Honey, the world ain't ended. We're still here on this damn ride. World had ended, we wouldn't be suffering any. This ain't the world ending. It's something else entirely."

She watched as he looked at the window, and she figured he was set to argue with her some, but he didn't, and she nodded when he agreed with her. She could tie her shoulder up good, but she wasn't staying in this damn place. "Spent near a week in a cell before Shane found me, rotting things banging at the bars all hours and no way out. Got no interest in dying trapped. This place takes me, it's going to be fighting."

Oh, Lord. Graham rolled his eyes real hard when Clem remarked that Evie wasn't that pretty. Maybe Shane was inclined towards her like that, but he wasn't. "Don't like her like that," he told her, with a touch of exasperation. "How she looks ain't important." The mention of Marina made him pause some, and he wondered if he should ask after her son. He'd meant to check in before, see if his wish worked, but he'd never had the chance. Best not to bring it up now, though. He didn't really want to talk about wishes. "You think that's why Shane likes her? Or liked. Because she's pretty?" He never could keep straight what was current and what wasn't.

What she said about the world not ending, he had his doubts over. Maybe the end wasn't as nice or as clean as people hoped. When the dead outnumbered the living, how could the world be something worth saving? "Can't know that. Maybe this is just what comes after."

He could understand not wanting to die trapped. Hell, he always hoped he'd go out fighting when the time came. Never thought she'd say the same, though, and Graham gave her a long look before nodding. "Understand that."

"How a woman looks is always important, sugar," she said, like even in the middle of the damn zombie apocalypse things like pretty faces had value. "Don't matter what else is going on, pretty's got more value than ugly. You think she's pretty any?" His exasperation made her smile some, and it always did entertain her when he was real aggrieved, long as he wasn't mad and being an ass about it any. But this was just real standard Graham annoyance, and that kind of thing was regarded with a grin that was real enough, even with the dead folks banging some at the door at the stairs. But she did scoff some at Shane liking a woman on account of her being pretty. "Ain't got the slightest clue what makes Shane like a person. Figure being pretty matters. Seems to like momma-types that got some crazy going on on upstairs some. But Marina, she's striking plenty. I been helping her. She's real unhinged, but vain as narcissus, and I bet she was the prettiest thing in the world in her twenties. Reminds me of me some," she added, her smile real vain-bright.

"This ain't what comes after," she insisted of the dead banging at that door, and Shane always did say that thing wouldn't hold a whole lot longer. "Believed in Jesus until Lore died. Now I think there ain't a thing after this, sugar," she motioned to him, to her, and she looked toward the window. "How long we giving the man?"

"Meant it ain't important to me." He could be real stubborn when he wanted to be, and Graham didn't feel much like talking about how pretty Evie was or wasn't. She'd been nice, tried to help out around the house and talked to him when she'd seen he was real low; looks didn't factor into any of that none. If he stepped back and made himself look at her that way, okay, she wasn't bad-looking. Cute. Maybe pretty. But he had a daughter, a son he was trying to mend things with, a best friend he'd neglected and-- whatever Clem was, he'd done wrong by her too. Some people could have a whole lot of connections, be surrounded by people, but him? He wasn't like that. "Don't think anything," was his eventual response. He laughed when she described Shane's supposed 'type', and he had to admit that between Marina and Evie it was accurate some. "Helping her with what?" He shook his head. "Yeah? You think you'll be like her someday?" Now there was a thought.

His head turned toward the banging at the door, and he frowned. But maybe she was half-right, maybe the resurrection of the dead like this wasn't what came after. Maybe it was just a thing that happened. "Maybe," he shrugged. "But I... I got to believe there's something more. When Lore-- when she left, I got to believe she went someplace else. Someplace better." He shrugged again, focusing instead on Shane and how long they were meant to wait. Too long and the dead would break down the door. Not long enough and Shane might come back on his own. But they could leave some kind of message for him, just in case.

He got up, moving toward the door to feel how steady (or unsteady) it was. "Already been gone a couple days. See what happens after an hour."

She knew what he sounded like ornery. And this was the man being ornery. Clem made a sound of being aggrieved, like putting up with him was real hard work. But it wasn't anything angry any; this kind of ornery she was used to from him. It wasn't around any when she was small and all his time was spent making doe eyes at her sister, but he'd been fussing like this since she first met him in Vegas, and she was used to it some. "You're supposed to tell me she ain't pretty as me, you damn fool of a man," she informed him, all eye roll and like he was the dumbest thing ever come calling. "Marina's man took her boy away, and he's been terrible to her as can be about giving him back or even letting her see him any. I gave her money for some law help. She lives across the hall from me. That's how I met her, and how I found out about Shane and her." But she scoffed then, real unimpressed. "If I end up forty and crying over men not loving me any, then you shoot me right there and then. Real sad, being insecure like that."

She didn't turn to look at that shaking door, because looking wouldn't make it shake a damn bit less. She was busy looking on his face as he talked about Lore going somewhere better, and she sighed and relented some. "Always did want to believe that. Just ain't sure I do." Was hard, believing in a thing like Heaven, all while sitting in church with daddy's hand on her knee and no one doing a thing about it.

He got up to check on the door, and she figured an hour was long enough to wrap her arm tight enough that it didn't cause them any trouble out there. "You bring bandages for wrapping this thing good?" Might as well put that hour to use.

Outside, under the shaking fucking sky that broiled putrid gray and promised Georgia rain, a series of whistling shots went off—fireworks spitting sparks somewhere not too far from the front door of that old-fashioned pharmacy that stood decaying on the corner of Main Street and Second. Pop, bang, once and fucking again. Then a bag, threadbare canvas sotted and spotted, came through the window Clementine
opened for air. It was fucking heavy, and if it burst when it landed, that was just too the fuck bad.

It was food, dented cans, none yet bloated with taint of botulism. It was water—not much and brownish—in a hard-shelled canteen. It was fucking clean shirts, bald, bland, and bloodbless, and a pair of boots brand new out of the box, smallish, with wadded rags stuffed into rucksack pockets in case the fit wasn't right. There was no skitter of ammo.

The bag was followed by a the smacking wallop of a body against slatted wood—the rotted wall just beneath the open window.

This was fucking ridiculous.

Blood-blistered fingers on the white-splintered sill, limewash paint peeling from lack of care—no one in the fucking apocalypse paid much mind to shit like upkeep and trim windows—and Shane knocked his boots into wood, fucking kicking footholds into worm-eaten pulp and dragging himself the fuck up with a grunt and a painful fucking extension of muscles. His skin was gore-slick and he stank to high fucking heaven of rot, mulched guts and a reek of congealed blood boiled to syrup under sun. It was hard to tell if he was injured and the knife he held clamped between his teeth was as liable to fucking infect him, so stringy it was with viscera.

He'd jumped from the fucking building next door and it was hard enough to keep the breath in his body from the impact. The dead scuffled below, fucking drawn by the whizz-bang of firecrackers, but too by the force of a man hitting a wall so hard to shuddered.

Hanging there, Shane fucking tossed the crossbow he found, heavy shit that it was, into the room first. He didn't see Graham yet, and exhaustion and hunger made it fucking hard to press himself up after the initial exertion.

"Peaches, what the fuck—" It was a complaint issued around steel blade in a growl from mottled, smoke-scarred lungs, and if there was any fucking doubt before who it was, well, now they could be sure. "Christ!"

It was just like before, him rolling his eyes all exasperated-like and her instructing him on what he should say. That was nice, in a way, familiarity and nobody crying or making a mess of things. Graham just sighed. "Sure. She ain't as pretty as you." Dutiful repetition, but it was teasing; he was humoring her on purpose. He listened to her talk about Marina and her boy, and he chuckled when she made it real clear she didn't want to be a damn thing like the older woman. As for believing in Heaven, all of that, it was real hard to believe. Sometimes he wasn't sure he did, and sometimes he wanted to have faith so bad he thought he could. But he just shrugged, because he understood. He'd struggled with God and religion for a long, long time.

He looked back over his shoulder, one hand on the shaking door. "Yeah. Got some bandages in--"

That was as far as he made it. Graham heard the sounds from outside, like some kind of shots, high-pitch and whistling. He frowned, shot a glance at Clem, and started to move toward the window real slow when the bag came hurtling through the window. It was loud when it hit the ground, and his eyebrows went up in surprise. "The hell?" But it was more of a mutter, under his breath; zombies couldn't climb, yeah? Or throw shit through windows. He heard the slam of something heavy against wood, and it spurred him on into moving forward again, from where he'd paused, step by step bringing him closer to the sill. The crossbow came next, and he just looked down, watched it clatter close to his feet, and figuring it out wasn't rocket science. Ain't no zombie hanging from the edge, but any doubts about who it was were cleared up real quick when the words were spoken.

Shane.

Relief coursed through him, and Graham forgot all about announcing himself first as reached over to help haul him into the room, not caring about how he smelled or all the gore. "Christ. You're a sight for sore eyes."

She was about to harangue Graham about that dutiful repetition, because the man needed to work on it something fierce. Way he said it, he could have been saying dirt was the prettiest damn thing on the earth, an that just wasn't so. She was all set to launch into some big old speech about how he needed to give examples of all the way she was prettier than that crazy woman with the real bad hair, and then the bag came through the window, and Clem forgot about being pretty altogether. For the moment.

She watched the bag land, and her heart set to thumping, because could be some living bastard out there got a hold of Shane, which she was more scared of than anything decaying. That damn locker and the Governor's men, she could still see them when she screwed her eyes tight some.

She stood and backed away from the window, but then Graham was talking, and she reminded herself it would be just fine with Graham there. It took some convincing, and even that crossbow hitting the floor hard didn't calm her any. It was Shane's voice did that, complaining like he had some right to be fussed, and she moved forward real quick as Graham helped the man in.

One second was all she spared to be real glad that Shane was alive, and to be glad Graham seemed happy to see him, because that was like before Halloween some, and she wanted them to fix their problems near as much as she wanted any damn thing. One second.

Then Shane was inside, filthy as could be again, and Clem strode on forward and nudged at Graham to get near the damn man that worried her sick for days and days.

"You damn bastard, you do that to me again, and I sweat to God I'll kill you dead as can be," she spit, mad as cats, and she slapped Shane's damn face once for good measure, hard enough to sound like a thunderclap in the room, before wiping her dirty hand on Graham's clean sleeve. "You don't check in? You go missing for days? I thought your damn ass was dead!"

It was a man's hands that gripped him hard, and Shane recognized them as Graham's without fucking thinking about it. He grit his teeth together, blood and blade, and dragged himself up with the help, spitting the fucking knife to the discolored woodboard floors as soon as he collapsed over the sill. The last fucking thing he needed was some Glasgow grin gaping gory because he fucking tripped with a hunting knife in his mouth. The slaughter stuck to his lips and spread with his grimace as he got to his feet in that fucking room where the door thudded with the sounds of the starving, relentless dead, moans of shuddering air and skin shucking off sloppily against the grain that didn't yet give, though it groaned in complaint.

Shane was breathing hard, eyes bloodshot on Graham and something like a fucking grin there beneath the matted hair.

"About fucking time you showed," he panted, wanting to bend hands to knees to catch his breath, but before he could Clementine came forward. Shane looked at her, at the spit of anger the was as hardcast as bone on her face. He opened his mouth to say something when her fucking hand came the fuck from the side and stung across his filthy cheek with a smack.

Her hand, nails grimy, wiped on Graham's sleeve and Shane fucking rolled his jaw in its socket. He pulled a soggy, bent cigarette from the front pocket of his sodden shirt and he lit it with the sulphur-swipe of a match. One deep breath, his fucking face burning, and he exhaled.

"Fuck you," he told Clementine, filter stained by his fingers. He spat thick blood at her feet and stepped forward just enough to plant a messy, disgusting fucking kiss on her cheek, just to be an ass. He nodded at Graham and swiped at the string of spit that roped dark down his own chin with his sleeve that did nothing but smear the shit into the thin hairs there. "Fuck you too, asshole."

Truth be told, much as he knew Shane could take care of himself he'd still been worried at how long the man'd been gone. Sure, he looked like hell, but he was alive. Graham didn't bother trying to hide his grin as he helped get him over the sill, stepping back to give him some space to catch his breath once he was in and on his own two feet. "Sorry it took so long," he said, and he realized something then, or at least started to; he'd been so wrapped up in a ghost that he'd missed what was right in front of him. Real people, solid under his fingers. People who cared about him, people who for some godforsaken reason were willing to give him a chance even after he'd been a damn fool. He was sorry for more than just taking a while to get here.

But then Clem was nudging him out of the way, and he didn't think much of it until her palm met his cheek with a loud clap to go along with her angry words. Eyebrows raised, Graham just stared and tried real hard not to laugh. Hell, he didn't even mind when she wiped her hand on his sleeve; she cared more about cleanliness than he did. The kiss Shane placed on her cheek, though, that made him laugh some, and even if he was an asshole he was one that was suddenly real damn glad that they were both alive.

"You hurt?" He couldn't tell under all that blood.

Clem took a fast step back when Shane spit blood at her feet, and she was all ready to cuss at him on account of it, winding up for it and she didn't see that sloppy kiss coming until it was too damn late. She made a sound that was pure disgust, gagging and all, and she dragged the sling off to wipe at her cheek with it, because being clean of dead things was more important that feeling good. Simple as could be, and it was the one thing that bothered her most about this damn place.

Graham laughed, and she shot him a look before nudging him hard in the belly. She'd forgot how damn aggravating the two of them could be together, but behind that shove of annoyance there was something like real fond. It'd been a while since they'd all been in the same damn place. Felt like ages, and she figured it was half a year at least. Before Halloween for damn sure, and maybe some before that too.

She pressed the towel in Shane's face, after taking that cigarette off him. "You got slime all over you. Clean it and take that damn shirt off, unless we're going right back out," she said, and she looked over at Graham, who was asking if the infuriating man was hurt any. "He ain't hurt. He's being too damn impossible to be hurt any."

But she started picking up things escaped from that bag with her good arm and some wincing some, because while she didn't think Shane was injured, she figured he might be tired enough to need to rest some, and she figured they'd need to come up with a plan to get clear of this place, because looking out the window made it clear the noise had brung even more rotting thing to their door.

And that wood back there, it made sounds like splintering, and Clem sat heavy on the bed once things were cleaned up some, and she watched the two of them. Sight for sore eyes was a stupid damn saying, but it made some sense now.

"Missed your fucking asses too." Clementine fussed and Graham laughed, and Shane was smirking feral beneath the grubby gore, comfort to be had in both the fucking pathetic cigarette, whose smoke came out thready and weak, and the company, as fucking violent as it was, yeah? After nearly two days or however the fuck long it'd been, she could have hit him with a fucking board and he would've fucking kissed her, and not only to be an ass.—He gave a growl of a laugh as Clementine elbowed Graham, and he took the towel passed to him, shitty exchange rate meaning his cigarette got plucked away.

He swabbed at his face. He didn't dare use any of the fucking water they had. They wouldn't die if he wasn't clean. They would die if they didn't have anything to drink. He scrubbed his skin red beneath the fucking bile and blood, clearing enough of it off of his face, even if it mostly pushed the shit back to the edges, so he looked like a man who dipped his fucking face in chalk more than anything. Whatever. He discarded the shit. Shane peeled off the shirt that stuck to him like it was drenched in rain—though the truth was much fucking more disgusting than that—and he roughly grabbed one of the clean t-shirts from the bag he'd heaved through the window.

But, Shane didn't put the thing on, yeah? He wadded it and stretched out on that poor bed, this being the first time he was able to fucking sit or lie down since he'd left.

"I didn't get fucking bit, yeah?" He replied to Graham after checking himself there, even as he painted them with brains, duodenum, and ruptured, festering whatever-the-fuck. Shane pointed one dirty finger toward the window he'd just come through. "Shutters—" Then to his bag. "Brought nails and a hammer. Rip those fucking shutters off and nail them across the door. Not much, but something."

He'd help, but now that he was fucking lying there, he didn't think he could get up.

Taking off the sling was real stupid, but Clem had always cared more about appearance than near anything else. None of this bothered him anymore, the smell or the feel of it on his skin, blood and rot, and he just grunted at the elbow to his belly. "Knew you'd come back," he told Shane. "Nice of you to make sure we didn't have to go looking for your ass." It was gruff but fond, and truth was Graham wouldn't have just left him out there. Even if he had to take Clem home and come back in, he'd have done it.

He watched Clem shove the towel at Shane, and he watched him clean himself off best he could. "Can be impossible and hurt at the same time," he remarked dryly. Yeah, they needed a way out. That was for damn sure. There were more outside now, and Graham thought about leading them away some while Clem picked up the fallen items.

But just then, they had to secure the damn door. He nodded when Shane said he hadn't been bit, and he nodded again in agreement with his plan about the shutters. "Okay." He gestured to his backpack. "Brought some water, if you want it." Figured he'd be thirsty after days out there on his own.

He didn't ask for help. He didn't need it. Graham hadn't been there as long as them, wasn't as tired or hungry or thirsty, so he went about ripping off the shutters without hesitation. "Rest some," he said as he worked, words a little rough with strain. "Then we can think about how to get the hell out of here." Once he was done he dug out the nail and hammers, and went back to the door to start putting them in place.

Clem was real sure she might die if Shane wasn't clean; man was wrong about that. It was silly as could be, but with everything wrong outside, keeping things tidy felt like humanity carrying over. Dumb as anything, but she wasn't inclined to question. All she knew was Shane was lying on the damn bed, and he was still filthy as could be. Graham didn't care any, but she didn't expect him to. That man would lie himself down on the same bed and not care if they were all swimming in guts.

Her life, it was real hard sometimes.

She rolled her eyes at Graham's dry correction. "Hurt wouldn't be near as impossible. Hurt men, they get whiny some. Every woman knows men can't handle pain well as we can, Graham." She said it while reaching for the dregs of not-clean water she'd made Graham use to clean up, and she made a face as she reclaimed the towel that served for her sling and dipped a clean corner in.

She took to wiping hard at Shane's face and the roots of his hair at his temples, figuring that damn man wouldn't even move from where he was on that bed. Tired, she figured, that was what he was, and she glanced some over her shoulder as Graham set to work on nailing shutters. "We can go come morning. Worse out there at night." Which Graham didn't need her to actually say, but sometimes her own voice was a real nice thing, especially with two men that liked not saying much. Heck, anything was better than the things working hard at splintering the door, and maybe she was winding down some, realizing dying might not happen today. Shaking hands, and she hadn't been so damn sure that morning.

"You going to say what the heck happened to you?" she asked Shane, real fussed about it.

He did want water, but more than that, he wanted to fucking close his eyes, yeah? Just for a fucking minute or whatever. Just for two fucking seconds he wanted to let his bones settle on that bed. Hunger, thirst, and exhaustion puffed and burned on blue eyes, hung as heavy bags, and Shane only gave something of a grumble when the room-temperature wetness of the rag hit his face and Clementine began scrubbing at him. Like the last reserves of his energy had been tapped dry just fucking getting through that window with that bag.

It was a fucking catch-22—the boards on the door or whatever. They had to do the shit before the rotting oak splintered from hinges from sheer fucking weight, as the press of decomposing, moaning bodies piled on and on, but smacking the shit out of nails with a hammerhead made noise, and noise drew more, yeah? But Shane knew, even fucking prostrate there with a t-shirt under his head, that if they didn't board the door now, it wouldn't matter if more didn't come, because the shit would come down.—They needed to get the fuck out. He needed to get the fuck up. They should probably shift the bed in front of the door, more counterweight and another obstacle, yeah? They should fucking take the closet doors off and get them covering the now-shutterless windows, unless they wanted the cool night to seep in and pool in the folds of their clothes or the spill of the few candles Shane had found to alert every living fucker in a one-mile radius that there was shit to be had.

"In the bag, yeah? There's a real fucking sling for that arm," muttered the man to his fucking nurse. "Shoes too. Got batteries and gum for a fire." Shane struggled a bit to fucking remember everything that jangled in that stupid canvas sack, but he gave up when Clementine asked him what happened. "Didn't see anyone living, yeah? Found a town two or three miles down the fucking state road. Empty. Couple farms scattered around. Places with the dead shit still locked inside, canned food untouched, probably turned when the shit started. Lost my fucking journal in one of them, but I found a place, yeah? Better than this shit, brick farmhouse. I cleared it. Got a woodstove, water from a well." He shifted and opened his eyes on Clementine and Graham. "But it's far the fuck out from any towns and shit, yeah? From doors."

"Ain't whiny real similar to impossible?" It was cheeky, sure, but Graham didn't turn back to look and so his expression wasn't visible to read. Hammering nails into wood wasn't quiet work but the dead folk were already out there, being quiet wouldn't keep the door from being broken down and if it was, well, one zombie or twenty didn't matter; without a door, they were screwed. Better to buy themselves some more time. He tried not to be any louder than he needed to be, and he tried to be quick, but he tried to make damn sure he did a good job, too.

Waiting till morning sounded just fine to him. Gave them a chance to rest, at least. He kept on nailing the shutters while Shane talked, listening as best he could, mind half on what he'd have to do next; cover the windows, brace the doors a little more. That old survival instinct kicked in, like it did whenever he ended up here. Real familiar, and comforting in a way that made no damn sense.

"Somewhere better than this is good," he said, finally. "But we need a door to get out." They could be okay in the farmhouse for a while, though. Graham finally finished with the shutters and turned to face the other two, head tipped to the side, thoughtful. But he didn't say anything else; he went over to the closet and started sizing up the doors instead.

The only thing that saved Shane from getting scrubbed near to death was Graham being cheeky over there with the damn hammering. Clem balled up the towel, damp and disgusting as it was, and she tossed it clear across the room and at the man's head. Her aim with her good arm wasn't half bad, neither, so take that Graham Ross, and she smiled at herself, all smug as she looked back at Shane and his talking about farms.

Which was better than focusing on the noise the things outside the door Graham was working on were making. Sounded loud, that hammering, and the things outside sounded more determined. Something screamed like splintering, cracked through, and she wondered if that would have happened without any of them there. She shook her head some a second later, because no point in playing games with what if here. Every damn thing here could turn bad, and that was just something a person had to live with.

She understood the dilemma, too, because young wasn't stupid. Farmhouse might be safe, but it wouldn't get them home any. "We tried everything in this town, and there ain't a door out. Maybe doors are more scarce now, or maybe they're in other places." Was worth considering. There were more dead out, and this place felt worse than the last time, like living folks were losing whatever foothold they had - if they'd ever had any worth mentioning.

Truth was, Graham might not be spent, but she and Shane were, and it showed. "We can rest a few days. Drink some damn water and be clean at that farm, and then we can try getting out again," she suggested. "You're fresh, honey," she said to Graham. "We ain't, and there's no other towns for miles." No way Shane would make it walking, not without some resting first.

"Glad you assholes made up," Shane laughed like smoke-cure and gravel when that snotty, grimy rag fluttered across the room to smack into Graham. He was beyond fucking exhausted, but he meant it, because it was about fucking time, yeah? He was glad Graham seemed to have come around, that Lore seemed to be fucking gone, and that Clementine seemed to accept him back, even if she was throwing gross shit at him. Shane gave her a sleepy smirk when she let off with the swabbing and it ticked to Graham the same.

He rolled in the bed, onto his side, and he stuffed the shirt into a more comfortable fucking position beneath his arm, so he was facing the both of them. His gaze covered the windows and the stupid shuddering door, sweeping down to his bag and the crossbow both.

"She's right, yeah? You're fucking annoying and fresh," he said finally to Graham with the jerk of his chin. "I'll cover your ass in a couple hours, take rotation or whatever the fuck. Get some beans and shit into us, and we can fucking split at first light. If we can't get through the fucking door, we'll go out the window." It'd be hard for Clementine, but what the fuck choice did they have? "More firecrackers in the bag or whatever, so don't fucking light shit by it."

Shane closed his fucking eyes, curling inward toward Clementine, and he exhaled. His words had grown quieter and quieter as he talked, until they trailed off into nothing but breath, and he was out like a fucking lamp, safe there, and together with the people he cared about most.
