Tana-tana-tana-tanabata!
Who: EVERYONE
What: WISHES
Where: SHRINE
When: TANABATA
Why: TANABATA

It was a story of star crossed lovers. Literally.  Orihime and Hikoboshi, meeting up with one another for only one night a year, seperated by the Milky Way. This always seemed kind of stupid (you'd think they would get tired of only being able to be with the one they love for only one day out of the entire year) but humanity was always romantic, and so, their reunion was celebrated.

There was bamboo set up everywhere, with little pieces of paper on them. These pieces of paper held the wishes of everybody that came to the festival, in hope that one day, they too will be able to have their wish come true. They would be burned the day after, true, but just for one night, it seemed that anything could happen.

Everywhere you look, people in yutakas walked around. There were booths everywhere, and people playing at those booths. Really, it was quite nice.

Kanaye was having great pleasure in people looking at his yutaka in confusion. It was gold. Not actually the element, but it was definitely light, shiny, and pure gold in color. The contrast between it and every other yukata nearby was shocking to say the least.  He was waiting for Maeko, who hasn't shown up yet.

"Sasa no ha sara-sara~"

Haruka, in a striking sunflower-patterned yukata, was leading the elementary- and middle-schoolers in the traditional Tanabata song, the cheery and mildly out-of-tune voices rising above the clamor of the festival. Both she and the kids looked like they were having the time of their lives.

"...kin gin sunago!"

Doubly so when they finally finished the song and she let the ones who weren't in drama run off to rejoin the festivities. The rest she kept; she had ~plans~ to bring to fruition.

Tomako had only joined in with this trival singing as a means of occupying Keito and Nami. He'd rememebered the song when he was younger and when his siblings were gone he glanced over at Haruka-sempai and quickly asked.

"So why are you keeping us all here?"

Geta were weird. Especially when you were trying to decend ten flights of stairs wearing them at high speed because you were already late becuase you'd wasted a good half hour explaining to your father why you weren't wearing the yukata you were given last year and you weren't used to moving in a yukata anyway.

Having reached the bottom of the stairs, Maeko decided that in hindsight she could have just put the geta on at the bottom of the staris and saved herself several almost-descending-face-first situations. Oh well. It was still better than taking the elevator.

Not thinking too much about how weird it was that she'd gone home for the first time in a month just to ask her mother 'how do I yukata' (Misaki had always helped her before), she set off toward the festivities.

Well at least Kanaye was easy to find. Kanaye would probably manage to find a way to be easy to spot if he was invisible. At this point, she thought for a few seconds about how 'Senpai, sorry I'm late' sounded like something a shoujo heroine would yell. She refrained from saying it and decided to try to think of something less stupid.

"Senpai. Sorry I took so long." She said, not succeeding.

Kanaye simply enjoyed the ambiance as he waited. He loved festivals, and not just as an excuse to get drunk and party. Simply the feeling of hope that it gave him was almost enough to make him think he was a decent person. Almost.

Smiling at a pair of middle-adged women who looked at him in confusion, he turned his head when he saw Maeko and blushed. She...was really pretty. He shook his head and smiled, returning to "lovable idiot" mode. "Don't worry about it, Maeko-chan. Just you being here is enough for me." he said, walking over to her with an ease only years of practice could give him. "You look beautiful in that, by the way." he said shyly.

He held out a hand. "Where shall we go first, Maeko-chan?" he asked softly.

"Flowers, Flowers, give you lady a flower to celebrate the meeting of the lovers in the sky!" Misaki sang out to couples passing by, handing out a small flower for boys to put in girls hair, then directing them to her brother's booth.

She was tired but you would never tell with the smile on her face. Up till very early that morning she had been working on Kimono's for those who had wanted them, and had rushed to their dorms and houses to drop them off.

(At Kozue and Kiriko's room she left a wrapped up package with the yukata inside.) http://www.ka-cho-fu-getsu.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=85_86&products_id=208&zenid=fe07af51d7028011b57929b8434e0980

(At Renju's dorm room she left the yukata in a green package) http://interestedinyukata.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/yukata001.png?w=273&h=381

(Rushing up to Keiichi's dorm she quickly presented it to him, then waved and hurried off to drop off the others.) http://japan.osu.edu/outreach/discovery_box_contents/yukata.jpg

(Nayuki she had Thankfully caught the day before and given it to him) http://www.eleykishimoto.com/shop/images/uploads/limited%20edition/kimono/mens-flash-blk.jpg

(From there she hurried over to Yoshimi's room and left it in a pink package for her) http://media.photobucket.com/image/Green%20and%20pink%20yukata/hmccaw/yukata5.jpg

Now she was wondering if she would see Kanaye ( http://oriental-decor.com/product/3922.html ) and Maeko (http://www.bonanzle.com/booths/JoeSSJ4/items/Kimono_with_Obi___Red#) in their outfits.

She was also a bit concered that her own yukata wasn't going to be up to part for what her brother needed. Though she liked the design that she had created ( http://www.akinaiblog.com/media/shop/shop/i/full/women-yukata-white-5.jpeg ) after all it had been the last one she had made before fallin asleep at the counter that morning before the mid afternoon rush.

Looking around at the people she quickly shook her head and called out again, "Flowers to celebrate the lovers! Give your girl a flower to show how much you care. Would you cross the celstial heavens just for a kiss. Give her a gift to celebrate their romance!"

Seiji was not nearly as good as Misaki at the 'handing out flowers' thing. Mostly because he couldn't get anyone's attention. He considered being a little louder but then he might bother someone and they'd be mad and he'd have totally ruinned someone's Tanabata and that was a bad thing and he would go to hell.

"um, flowers are nice and kind of pretty. you can have one! they're very good."

[Ryota wears a white-black yukata, the former colour running half across the chest and down the skirt, which ends with a wave pattern stitched with black thread. Kou's is thick and plain - there's no other colour than navy blue.]

The Oubais had appeared inside the crowd when the festival seemed to come to life. Kouchisei had asked his father to come with no small amount of hint-dropping, but knew eventually he would be left to enjoy the ambiance of the celebration and warm food on his own. He also wanted to tie his wish to the tree. How old had he been the last time he'd done it. Ten? He didn't see why he should. There were no gods. No spirits. It was pointless.

Except he was having a good time. The smell of frying Takoyaki was inspiring, though he wondered if it was clean, given the fact it was being cooked in the middle of a congested city.

"You. Wipe that look off your face."

Kouchisei, personally, didn't like to smile. He hated the lying, the arrogance, the associations and duplicity. People would learn to like it - he didn't have the time to change himself to please other people. Perhaps it was no mistake his expression was now worse compared to how he'd left it.

"Do it or we're going home."

He followed behind with a vacant expression. He wasn't miserable, for crying out loud. He just wasn't a smiler. Except his father said do it for others if not for yourself. Keep an eye on your valuables. Don't go flashing them in the open. All were pieces of advice and he didn't pay attention to where they were going, or who they were near.

Misaki spotted Kou quickly and hurried over to him, "Oubai Sempai! Hello! Would you like a free flower!"

She grinned happily at him and extended the water lily with a look to her face of, 'I remember you liked this flower'. She glanced at his father and bowed politely, "Good evening Oubai-sama. Would you care for a free flower as well?"

Tom was also at the festival, he wore his black suit, and hat, pulled down over his face. He had contemplated wearing a yukata, it would make him less suspicious, but even with research he wasn't sure how to put one on, also he was certain it would restrict his movements and it would be nearly impossible to hide his weapons under it.

So he moved through the crowd, not bothering with the booths, and trying not to be noticed. This also of course meant keeping away from Kanaye, since it was impossible to do anything inconspicuous when Kanaye Satou was around.

Ginjiro was wandering around waiting for Noriko to come back from talking with some friends that she'd spotted and was reclining on a chair that someone had just recently vacated, when he spotted Tom standing there and decided to have some fun.

Wandering over he moved against the wall nearest Tom and without looking asked, "So how goes the case Detective?"

It had definitely been a good choice to get a new yukata from Misaki—it completely assured Kozue that nobody else was going to be wearing the one that she was, which had happened to her at an Obon celebration in middle school and it had just been… ugh. So embarrassing.

And she'd worried about it at every festival since then, up until now. And her date for the evening had even commented on how beautiful the fabric was. (Although honestly dates were supposed to say that, no matter what you wore. It was their job, practically.) But she did look pretty—the blue complimented her, would have complimented her even better if she'd left out her color contacts, even. The geta made her just a bit taller. For once, her hair was pulled back into a neat bun, with several bright, jingling kanzashi hair sticks poking out at angles.

Now, she was wandering through the many display booths with that date, clinging onto his arm, although barely. He was only a little bit shorter than Keiichi had been—another hit on her streak of dating freakishly tall men. But he was a basketball player, so this was entirely justified. They'd been to a few of the fun places, won a goldfish which now dangled, alone and forlorn, from a small plastic bag, awaiting the same fate that all Tanabata goldfish eventually met. "Let's get paper lanterns," she urged, pulling a bit insistently on the tall boy's long sleeve.

Hikaru was manning his post at the booth when he saw Kozue and waved to her, "Kozue-chan, good evening and how are you. I'm glad I caught you, I wanted to say thanks for helping Misaki with the flowers and everything when you and the others came. This booth looks wonderful."

He gave her a bright smile and quickly dug out a very lovely flower peice for her hair. "Here, this is mine and Misaki's thank you for all the work you did. I hope you enjoy it."

Hikaru gently opened up a small box that had a lovely purple and blue baby rose mix.

Yoshimi, having already made what she considered to be an embarrassingly self-centered wish, was taking her time to enjoy the rest of the evening. The soft glow of the festival lights, the hopeful atmosphere, the steady stream of young couples... it was all so romantic, but she found it a little bittersweet.

She sighed. Maybe she could go win herself a goldfish at one of the game stands and have it keep her company in her apartment.

Augh, no, I'm fifteen! I don't have to be one of those boring widows with a million cats!

And, really, she didn't. The new yukata fit her wonderfully, she'd actually taken the time to tame her hair into something other than pigtails, and all in all she felt even more confident than usual. In the mood for some human contact, she started looking around for anyone she recognized.

Though Shirou had come to the festival with his grandparents(in a yukata they bought for him!), they had told him go off on his own, saying something about how young people should be young and old people should be old. So it was that Shirou was left wandering the festival grounds on his own. He had spotted Masami earlier, but she had seemed busy doing shrine-related things and he hadn't wanted to get in her way so he didn't approach her.

The first thing one should do at Tanabata was, of course, hanging your wishes! Shirou already knew what his wish would be: that everything with Yoshimi would work out well. "ALL RIGHT! I'M PUMPED NOW!" Shirou shouted, then ran off to hang it up.

He made it all of maybe ten feet before crashing headlong into somebody who, in his hot-blooded haste, he hadn't noticed standing there. With his head still a blur, he managed to say "I'm sorry! Are you OK?" to the person, but in his dazed state he still hadn't seen who it was.

Shirou was about to get a rude awakening, once he realized that it was, in fact, a certain Tachibana Yoshimi who he had just smashed into.

Misaki had finally taken a short break from selling flowers and was now racing through the crowds, waving at people that were passing by. She ducked past several people and looked around the crowd trying to catch her breath. The text had said to meet by the game booths and Misaki had run as fast as she could in the geta she had on. Thankfully she'd broken these in before wearing them today so it was easier then expected.

Turning around she spotted Keiichi and waved, "Keiichi-kun, you made it!"

Keiichi felt somewhat...awkward in his yukata. He hadn't worn one in quite some time, since he was little. It was certainly comfortable, and he did love the color, but it was taking time to get used to.

"Of course, Mi-chan!" He spun around a bit for her. "How do I look? Thank you again for it, it's so comfy."

He smiled at her. "Sorry I'm a little late. How is the festival so far?"

Kiriko knotted her wish to the tree decisively, then stood back with a smile. Obviously superstitions weren't to be relied upon, but since the beginning of the schoolyear she'd been warming to the idea of supernatural forces. Their workings might elude her, but hoping a little luck might come her way couldn't hurt, could it?

She watched the tanzaku catch the breeze and twirl, stepping away after a few moments so as not to crowd the area. She started off with a sharp eye out for interesting vendors, tasty looking food and people she knew (in no particular order of priority). But, maybe she'd be harder to recognize with the makeup and the traditional look? She did seem to have gone a bit more into it than most of the other girls she saw, less because she was particularly traditional and more because festivals were like grown-up dressup days and she already a nice yukata and hair decorations and other accessories, anyway.

Renju had never really been one for festivals. She'd go to the important ones, like Obon, (on those occasions when her mother felt well enough to go) and she'd do hatsumode every year (which her father had always insisted on for some reason), but she'd never been to the rest, and certainly never on her own.

Thus, she was a little lost on her first real Tanabata. The lotus-patterned yukata (some part of her was oddly satisfied with the coloring) Misaki had made for her was very nice, but she could feel a few eyes on her that wouldn't otherwise be, which she really wasn't entirely comfortable with. After spending a little time creeping around and trying to be generally inconspicuous, she was rather grateful to run into a familiar, relatively friendly face amongst the crowd. "Ikeda-san?"

Toshimi reminded herself to thank Misaki again for the yukata. She would have been fine just wearing Western clothes to the festival, but wearing a yukata wasn't something she got to do very often, and it was the perfect chance to wear one. Another girl from the dorms had helped a bunch of girls (including Toshi) put them on before the festival, and it made the occasion feel quite special.

She affixed her wish to a nearby bamboo plant. Of course Toshimi didn't really believe that writing a wish on a piece of paper and tying it to bamboo would really make that wish come true. But it was still fun to do, when it was Tanabata, at least. She found herself vaguely wondering about someone she'd dated back home and how he was spending the holiday, but pushed the thought from her mind with a smile. That was all in the past. She reminded herself that home was Iburi now.

She wished there was some way to convey that to her lungs, though. The city air in the summer was particularly smoggy, which was something that Toshimi's body was totally unused to. This resulted in Toshimi having to stop what she was doing to finish a burst of coughing at random whenever she was outside, and today was no exception. She'd already lost track of the girls from the dorms. She lingered by herself near a food stand, eating some shaved ice in hopes of soothing her throat.

Misaki had wandered away from Keiichi when some of the boys in his class had come to talk to him about his father, something had told her that staying there might not have been the best choice in the matter. Not that they looked angry, it just seemed that they were going to talk about stuff she had no idea about and it always unerved her about the whole fighting aspect of the sport.

So now on her own she was heading around the jewelery stalls looking over some new hair clips and a few necklaces. She spotted a cute choker tie for a boy and reached for it, when she spotted a familar red yukata and glanced around the corner and spotted Maeko. Nervously she peeked out and said softly.

"Ah...Hi...Akuba-sempai. Ah, that's a nice yukata. It's new right?"

Masami was mostly assigned to tending to odd jobs around the shrine, but finally she was being allowed to walk around the area on her own for a while. Hopefully she'd encounter people she knew and join them in fun festival things, rather than being stuck alone.

To make it easier for people who knew her to spot her, she walked around the center of the area, not too close to any booth.

Something (perhaps incessant reminders from Kanaye, or a sense of "doesn't this always happen in anime?) had compelled Toru to show up for the festival. Most likely, a sense that Kazuya might be there. Folded up in one hand was a very personal (and definitely awkward) wish, which he discreetly tied to an out-of-the-way bamboo plant. If anyone were to find it, it'd probably be a kami, at least.

Having finished that, he continued along to get a look at the festival booths. Perhaps he would run into his classmates... Toru hoped they'd remember his clothing as the extravagant red kimono salvaged from that tree Shadow in his own dungeon.

Maeko would have been in tears if she hadn't learned that crying is a stupid thing to do when people don't respond to sound. As it was, she was snarling and hiccupping and desperately trying to stay angry so her mind could stay clouded.

Hiccup, snarl, almost fall, twist ankle, hiccup, limp, limp, hiccup, grate teeth.

It took a bit of searching but she finally found where she'd tied her wish. I wish for Misaki-chan to be happy and healthy because I can't be there for her right now.

Not anymore she didn't.

With no regard for how doing such a thing was improper, she grobbed the paper and pulled hard until it tore off in her hands.

Having disentangled herself from her date briefly, Kozue went about the business of actually making a Tanabata wish. She was standing near the stand of bamboo, holding the lucky scrap of paper in one hand and a pen in the other, and contemplating. She was even biting slightly on the left side of her lip and standing with her hips slightly askew. Wish, wish, wish, she had to think of a wish.

Festivals weren't so bad. Neat clothes to wear, neat things to do, plenty of sweets around to be purchased and eaten, and not even all of the annoying people who were running around like idiots bothered her that much. It was pretty entertaining overall. Unfortunately, she had made the mistake of going to the goldfish catching stand first. Every year she did her best to catch something and every year her father usually ended up catching a fish for her. However, this time her father had let her go off on her own. It was sort of nice to have a bit of independence, but she almost wished he was around to help.

Emi sighed to herself, pushing her the sleeves of her yukata up again so that they didn't get in the way. Time to try again. And... no go. She managed to pick one up, but the paper broke before she got it into the bowl. In silence, she lifted the busted paddle up and frowned at it. Why was it so hard to catch a stupid fish?!
