Tana-tana-tana-tanabata!
Who: EVERYONE
What: WISHES
Where: SHRINE
When: TANABATA
Why: TANABATA

It was a story of star crossed lovers. Literally.  Orihime and Hikoboshi, meeting up with one another for only one night a year, seperated by the Milky Way. This always seemed kind of stupid (you'd think they would get tired of only being able to be with the one they love for only one day out of the entire year) but humanity was always romantic, and so, their reunion was celebrated.

There was bamboo set up everywhere, with little pieces of paper on them. These pieces of paper held the wishes of everybody that came to the festival, in hope that one day, they too will be able to have their wish come true. They would be burned the day after, true, but just for one night, it seemed that anything could happen.

Everywhere you look, people in yutakas walked around. There were booths everywhere, and people playing at those booths. Really, it was quite nice.

Kanaye was having great pleasure in people looking at his yutaka in confusion. It was gold. Not actually the element, but it was definitely light, shiny, and pure gold in color. The contrast between it and every other yukata nearby was shocking to say the least.  He was waiting for Maeko, who hasn't shown up yet.

"Oh, I'm glad you like it, it suits you very well," Misaki said kindly, almost timidly. If Maeko really thought about it, she was being very much the timid middle school girl that Maeko once knew. Misaki gave her a soft smile. "It matches your eyes very well, and um...the bracelet looks nice too."

She wasn't sure what to say so quickly asked, "Um...has he gotten you a flower yet? They're giving them away from my shop. Nayuki-sempai was um...handing them out for me. He's been really nice recently."

Babbling...you're babbling, stop before you hit something... Misaki was frantically thinking. But her mouth kept moving while her head was screaming at her to shut up.

"And Kozue-chan help with the Ikebana group for the booth and such, so it looks really nice, you...you should stop by to see it. Um...and ah, I got to watch the Princess Bride movie with Kozue-chan, it was really rather fun. She introduced me to, what was it, Oh pretty in pink and a movie called the Breakfast Club. They were both kind of funny, although I still liked my anime more."

She paused and rubbed her arm, "You know they have some really nice braceletts over here, ah...I was just looking at them to see if I could find something for Kei-kun." Misaki looked a bit nervous, "We're...kinda going out."

Maeko was torn between trying to tune Misaki out and running away. She did neither, despite her best efforts. Her feet were rooted to the ground and something in her head wouldn't let her not listen to Misaki. She compromised with herself my not turning around and keeping her gaze fixed on the stall.

"Tonbo-san. He's in my class. He is a hard worker and quite helpful, yes. I'm glad he and Kondo-san have been suce a help to you." And then there were some words in english. Maeko assumed they were titles. "It's good that you enjoyed them."

"You can get them in stores, they're overpriced here. But it's nice to get a souvenir-"

The last line? That last line made something snap. That part of her that she didn't want to be anymore was shouting, screaming. 'Look, the second you move away from her and he's all over her. I knew it! I knew it!'

...and it had a point. She shut it up quickly and brutally anyway but didn't resond her a few seconds. When she did she turned around slowly, wearing a smile that even Toshimi would probably be impressed by.

"Congratulations then, Aoi-san. I'm sure you'll be happy together." She forced herself to say. Her hands suddenly felt very itchy again.

Kanaye panicked. This was exactly what he DIDN'T want to happen. Maeko and Misaki meeting was a terrible idea, and Kanaye knew enough of Maeko's body language to realize that Misaki had just said something horrible. Comparatively, at least. Still, he had a reputation to maintain, so he walked towards the two girls, holding out a drink to Maeko. "Here you go, Maeko-chan." he said, smiling, before pretending to notice Misaki. "Hey, Misaki-san! How've you been?" he asked, smiling. "What are you two talking about?"

Maeko had already started jumping to wild conclusions, the pasted-on smile seemed to accellerate the process. She was past 'Ito planned this whole thing, from sending me into that place and on, just to get into Misa's pants.' but not quite at 'Ito planned the murders in general to get into Misa's pants.' when a drink (and Kanaye, who was still holding the drink) appeared in front of her.

"Ah, senpai! Thank you!" She said, the smile becoming more natural as she took the drink. She took a sip and then decided to pretend that the straw was Keiichi and started chewing it. It helped a great deal.

"Aoi-san was telling me about some movies she was with Kondo-san. They have such strange names!" She said before resuming her task of crushing straw-keiichi's head with her teeth.

Misaki smiled some at Maeko when she finally did turn around. So what if she what if she was mentioinging Keiichi as a means of getting her attention. It wasn't wrong right?

She was about to say thanks when Kanaye walked over with a drink for her and Misaki nodded, "Um...Sempai, I thought you had mentioned to Akuba-san that I was going to be coming here with Keii-kun. Must have slipped your mind, huh?"

Misaki smiled cheerfully and picked up an item that looked right, "Hummm, I think this one should do well. He likes silver a lot, it'll look good on him."

"Oh yes, I was telling her that Kozue-chan and I watched Princess Bride and a few other movies. Kozue-chan really does look like the lead character of Butter-cup-chan. Although my favorite characters are the giant and Inigo Montoya, he's really funny. You'd like him Akuba-san. I think...if I could be anyone it would be Westly though. Just...what he does and how far he goes to be with his friends, even when he's brought back from the dead, it's just really cool." Misaki laughed some, "He reminds me a bit of Nayuki-sempai!"

Kanaye smiled a bit when Maeko relaxed. Murder, even if it was against someone who deserved it, was never good. He blushed when she started attacking the straw. It actually looked kind of adorable. "Strange names are all the rage these days, Maeko-chan."

Kanaye twitched quickly, but managed to calm himself down before he looked at Misaki and smiled. "I have no idea what you are talking about, Misaki-san. Have to admit, though, you and Keiichi-san are perfect for each other." in that you are both completely morons. The last part was obviously left unsaid. "Silver, eh? Let's hope he's not a werewolf, eh?" he joked with a smile.

Kanaye just smiled and nodded when Misaki went into her princess bridge tangent. He had no idea how to pronounce these names, nor who these people were, but he wasn't going to say that.

Keiichi the straw was now completely useless for drinking with. Much like Keiichi the person was completely useless for anything. Maeko took a sip from the side of the cup instead.

Misaki was proving impossible to phase out. Maeko had becided long ago that Misaki had to be listenned to. Keiichi the straw resumed taking abuse.

"I'm sure he'll like it." She forced herself to say in response, unable to keep up with the princess bride tangent.

Misaki smiled some tightly, he didn't remember, how convinent for him. "Oh you mean you don't remember at all the conversation we had when I gave you the kimono for today? The one where you upset Kozue-chan, by implying the fact that Keiichi-kun was going to expect me to sleep with him at some point and that I probably will turn out to be not so good at it. You don't remember that converstation at all?"

She nodded to Maeko, "I hope so, I was thinking of making one for him, but ran out of time. I made a bunch of yukata's for everyone. Sorry that yours was store bought Akuba-sempai. It looks good on you though."

Misaki was mentally twiching for not being able to say it was her creation, but if she did then a lot would come out, and it wasn't like she really wanted to hurt Maeko...was it? Cluching the item tightly she smiled softly, "He's been really sweet to me. He's coming to check out the cafe next week, hopefully. Though he seems a bit nervous to be honest."

Kanaye nodded, his smile strained. "Oh, right! I remember now. The one where you bitched and generally acted like a baby because Maeko-chan didn't want to talk to you anymore, even though it was for your own good, as well as Maeko's. I already apologized to Kozue, though. That part was my fault." he said, his voice still cheery but his eyes looking murderous.

Kanaye chuckled, still glaring. He had no real problems with Keiichi being with Misaki, honestly. He seemed sorry enough, and getting laid most likely helped that. On the other hand, Misaki was being a bitch. "Oh, right, the costume cafe! You'll do well there, Misaki-san. You have the correct personality for it." Dumb, cute, and happy.

Keiichi the straw was dearly loved in life, no doubt, by the other straws, They would mourn his passing as he was reduced methodically to crushed and chewed plastic. Maeko's free hand picked at the bandages.

And then a sudden, horrified realization. There was no way even Misaki would accidentally mention all that.

"She was right."

Not even Keiichi the straw's home was safe, it seemed. The plastic cup snapped, spilling lemonade onto the ground. Maeko seemed to notice this and turned around to throw it and the much-abused straw into the bin. Even in white-hot fury, littering was a bad thing.

"All this time, you really were nothing but a stupid, manipulative whore, weren't you?" She turned back from the litter bin and approached Misaki. "You're doing this on purpose. You've been doing it on purpose the whole time. And I knew, I just didn't want to admit it to myself. I was willing to kill everyone and then myself just so I could keep believing in you. I was tearing off my hands so I'd stop thinking about it, you bitch!"

She slapped Misaki with all the force she could gather.

"All this time. All this time. And the second I turned away you sent your brother to whine for you and filled my shoes with pins like the disgusting, petty bitch you are. And-" She lost control of words and dissolved into sign, occasionally making angry sounds as she motionned furiously.

"-Everything she wasid back there was true. Both of you can just go die." She finished, locating her voice again, and stormed off in a manner that would have been a lot more dramatic were she any good at walking in geta.

Kanaye just stared happily. THIS was the girl he fell in love with. Quite frankly, he was about to do that to Misaki himself. He was about to congratulate Maeko on standing up for herself and beating the crap out of Misaki when she decided to get mad at HIM, as well. Kanaye was at a loss. She...didn't really mean that, right? She was just mad. Yeah, that's it. She just insulted him because he was in range, and she'll calm down a bit after he apologizes for lying to her, because she'll understand, and they'll all be happy in the end, except for Misaki but who cares about her?

He calmed himself down and glared at Misaki. "Misaki-san, I am going to kill you if this means me and Maeko break up. And I'm going to tell Keiichi. Most likely, not in that order." he said angrily before turning to Maeko and running towards her. "Maeko-chan, wait!" he shouted. Even if he was better in the geta then she was, she still started earlier, so she was a ways ahead of him. "I'm sorry! I just wanted to make you feel better!"

As Keiichi approached, having successfully shooed away the variety of questions about his father, he noticed Maeko stomping away. He'd heard the words "both of you can just go die," and was confused.

Really, he was used to being told to die by Akuba. But TWO people Maeko wanted to die?

"Um, did I miss something," he asked, looking at the still-somewhat frightening facial expression of Kanaye's as he stomped off after Maeko, then back to Misaki, and then around in a general circle.

And then he sighed.

Misaki stood there in pain, her cheek was red and tears were on her face. What was she doing? After all of this...she just wanted...oh god. That thing in there was right. She was playing with Maeko...wasn't she. She'd always just been doing that. She was nothing but one of those horrid harpey creatures that...

"I hate you...I hate you so much Maeko Akuba..." she said softly trembling some. She was about to run off when she ran into Keiichi, looked at him and burst into hard sobs on his chest. "God, I hate her...she's that same girl that used to pick on me in middle school. Nothing changed."

Keiichi sort of just...stared off into space. Something was wrong. Drastically, cosmically wrong.

And then, Misaki crashed into him. His arms went around her automatically, holding her close, as he heard her say words that he never thought he'd hear Misaki say.

"I...err...you what? What happened, Mi-chan?" He had no clue, but he imagined he was about to find out.

"It's my fault Keiichi, that thing in there was right! I'm a horrible horrible person. I was trying to talk to Maeko chan, and I just...I want her to actually look at me, and talk to me! And I got so upset that I baited her into a fight! And she told me that that thing was right about me! That I'm this bitch, and it's right...god...I just...I got so jealous that I couldn't take it and I stated a huge fight with her. I'm such a jerk...no I'm worse then that, I'm the splooge that you get from the remains of a dead flower."

She was shaking in Keiichi's arms. "And now I just spoiled your evening. I'm sorry. I just...I shouldn't have come here tonight."

Keiichi was still somewhere between "confused" and "confused confused." Best he could get out of the gist of what was being said was that she'd had a fight with Maeko -- which was surprising enough considering the two of them seemed joined at the hip.

He did his level best to comfort her, holding her close and half-carrying, half-pulling her over to a more private place, away from prying eyes of festival-goers.One of his hands ran through her hair, affectionately.

"You've done no such thing, Mi-chan. We're going to have a good time tonight, regardless of what Maeko has to say about it."

God, he hated Akuba-san. Even now she was still being a prick, and that was AFTER she'd been rescued.

Misaki tried to calm down and took some breaths before she could explain. "Keiichi-kun. I really did mess up. Akuba-san, she said to me she didn't want to be friends. She wanted me to be more independent or something. That she was making me into something or that I was imaginary. I can't remember everything, but she said it wasn't my fault it was her fault...and...and then she started to go out with Satou-sempai...and I was dumb enough to help him..."

Tears were starting to come again, "I just wanted her to be happy, but any time he's around her I get upest because it's like there's this gaping distance and I can't reach her. She's...she's my best friend Keiichi. She said she was happy for me, so why did I go and mess it up."

Misaki rested her head on his chest and sighed into the warmth. "Yeah...we'll have a good time. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have tried to see her."

"She's dating *Kanaye?*" To put it mildly, Keiichi was stunned. As far as he could tell, Maeko and Kanaye had hated one another. Clearly, he'd missed out on a ton of things.

"They're dating, Mi-chan. That's how it is sometimes. When you're dating someone, sometimes you pay too much attention to them. I'm more worried about the fact that you two had a fight..."

Clutching her closer, Keiichi kissed her on the cheek. "I'll be here with you. Take all the time you need, and then we can go back to the festival."
