Tana-tana-tana-tanabata!
Who: EVERYONE
What: WISHES
Where: SHRINE
When: TANABATA
Why: TANABATA

It was a story of star crossed lovers. Literally.  Orihime and Hikoboshi, meeting up with one another for only one night a year, seperated by the Milky Way. This always seemed kind of stupid (you'd think they would get tired of only being able to be with the one they love for only one day out of the entire year) but humanity was always romantic, and so, their reunion was celebrated.

There was bamboo set up everywhere, with little pieces of paper on them. These pieces of paper held the wishes of everybody that came to the festival, in hope that one day, they too will be able to have their wish come true. They would be burned the day after, true, but just for one night, it seemed that anything could happen.

Everywhere you look, people in yutakas walked around. There were booths everywhere, and people playing at those booths. Really, it was quite nice.

Kanaye was having great pleasure in people looking at his yutaka in confusion. It was gold. Not actually the element, but it was definitely light, shiny, and pure gold in color. The contrast between it and every other yukata nearby was shocking to say the least.  He was waiting for Maeko, who hasn't shown up yet.

Geta were weird. Especially when you were trying to decend ten flights of stairs wearing them at high speed because you were already late becuase you'd wasted a good half hour explaining to your father why you weren't wearing the yukata you were given last year and you weren't used to moving in a yukata anyway.

Having reached the bottom of the stairs, Maeko decided that in hindsight she could have just put the geta on at the bottom of the staris and saved herself several almost-descending-face-first situations. Oh well. It was still better than taking the elevator.

Not thinking too much about how weird it was that she'd gone home for the first time in a month just to ask her mother 'how do I yukata' (Misaki had always helped her before), she set off toward the festivities.

Well at least Kanaye was easy to find. Kanaye would probably manage to find a way to be easy to spot if he was invisible. At this point, she thought for a few seconds about how 'Senpai, sorry I'm late' sounded like something a shoujo heroine would yell. She refrained from saying it and decided to try to think of something less stupid.

"Senpai. Sorry I took so long." She said, not succeeding.

Kanaye simply enjoyed the ambiance as he waited. He loved festivals, and not just as an excuse to get drunk and party. Simply the feeling of hope that it gave him was almost enough to make him think he was a decent person. Almost.

Smiling at a pair of middle-adged women who looked at him in confusion, he turned his head when he saw Maeko and blushed. She...was really pretty. He shook his head and smiled, returning to "lovable idiot" mode. "Don't worry about it, Maeko-chan. Just you being here is enough for me." he said, walking over to her with an ease only years of practice could give him. "You look beautiful in that, by the way." he said shyly.

He held out a hand. "Where shall we go first, Maeko-chan?" he asked softly.

Beautiful.

So that was a first and probably a lie and not something Maeko was entirely sure how to respond to. So she nodded and smiled. "...thank you again, senpai. It's very nice."

In truth, she preferred her own and was more than a little suspicious of this (it had been, what, a day since she'd heard Misaki was giving her the same thing?) but it was rude not to accept gifts and th lot thing she wanted to do right now was risk insulting the son of one of her current bosses. And it was nice enough, being able to pretend she was some nice, normal girl like this. The kind who didn't drive thier friends to suicide and have witches in thier heads.

"I don't really mind. If you don't have anywhere in mind it'd be nice to just look around."

Kanaye smiled in response, a little shyly. "It's not problem, Maeko-chan. Do you like it?" he asked. He was feeling a little guilty over using Misaki's idea and insisting that it was his, but oh well. "If you prefer your old one, I can wait for you to go back home and get into that one. I don't want you to feel uncomfortable for my benefit."

Kanaye sighed happily. Today was bliss. He was with the one he loved, it was a romantic night, nothing could possibly go wrong, and his urge to murder Misaki was lowered. Truly, today was perfect. "Alright, Maeko-chan. Let's have some fun, alright?" he said, content.

"Of course! It's lovely!" Maeko said, a little too insistant. She nodded and tugged at her hairclip and then turned her attention back to Kanaye, taking his hand. Her palms were still bandaged but it was nice to be able to move her fingers again.

She nodded again, squeezing Kanaye's hand and looking around.

Kanaye quirked an eyebrow at it but nodded all the same. "I'm glad to help, Maeko-chan. It looks great on you!" Granted, Kanaye would have thought that a paper bag would have looked good on Maeko. Either way, he suspected that Maeko suspected that the yutaka was Misaki's, but he wasn't going to push him luck any further.

He blushed and squeezed her hand back. Even with the bandages being rough on his skin, it still felt nice. He started walking around, making sure not to move too fast for Maeko, and simply enjoyed the moment.

Geta were still weird. Maeko was struggling to even keep up her normal pace. It wasn't like there was any hurry, even if she wanted to go faster everyone else was moving just as slow. She settled for alternating her normal pace with a few quicker steps every now and then.

"Are there any stalls you want to visit, senpai?"

Kanaye walked slowly. He had practice in geta, as well as pretty much everything vaguely formal, ever. He even managed to convince some of the maids to help him walk in high heels, should he need it. At least his dad was useful for something.

"Anything you want to visit, Maeko-chan. I'm just happy I'm here with you."

Maeko thought for a second.

"Oh, did you tie your wish yet, senpai? I need to tie mine still..."

Kanaye smiled. He hadn't, actually. He was too busy waiting for Maeko, but he wasn't going to say that. "Well, let's go then! I haven't tied mine either, so it'd be a good experience for both of us!" Kanaye said happily as he led his girlfriend down the road.

After obtaining some tanzaku paper for himself and his girlfriend, Kanaye happily went to work writing his wish down.

I wish that me and Maeko-chan can live a long and happy life together, free from annoying parents, psychopathic versions of ourselves, or magical mind gods. Maybe not the last one, I kind of like those.

He tied his wish to the tree and waited for Maeko.

Maeko had to think about her wish carefully. She wasn't sure how much she believed in this stuff but it was worth a try. her hand hovered above the paper for a second, torn between I wish that I'm the last one to be takenand I wish that I won't get fired from Kigakiga for not going to work for two weeks because my evil twin kidnapped me.

And then she watched Kanaye tie his wish and wrote something completely different. If someone else was taken, she'd bring them back. If she got fired she'd just find another job. Wishes needed to be saved for important stuff.

She tied it carefully to the tree and turned back.

"All done!"

Kanaye waited patiently with a smile on his face. Just watching her was enough for him. He really didn't deserve someone like her...

When she was finished, Kanaye just grinned. "All right, Maeko-chan! What shall we do know? Play some games, have some food?" he asked with a smile.

Maeko thought for a second as she took Kanaye's hand again.

"Oh, that game with the hoops and the goldfish! Do they still have that at festivals? I havn't played it since I wass a kid."

Kanaye squeezed her hand, looking absolutely delighted. "Yeah, I think so! Those were fun." he said with a nostalgic smile. Kanaye's mother taught him a few things about these games. He might actually have to thank his parents for something once he gets home. That's being a good son, right?

Kanaye started walking slowly again, looking around for the goldfish game. He wasn't having much luck, mainly because he kept getting distracted by Maeko.

Maeko was only slightly more focussed on finding the stall, instead getting distracted by geta being hard to walk in. She'd have to get some 'walking in stupid shoes' practice in before Obon.

"Aha! There!" She finally said, pointing to a stall up ahead.

Kanaye smiled and started to walk towards the stall. He noticed how incredibly flimsy the nets were, but didn't bother to say anything. Maeko wanted to do it. Who's he to stop her? Instead, he simply smiled at the person running the stall. Kanaye paid the other man, who handed him one of the flimsy nets. He looked at it in disgust before turning to Maeko and smiling, holding the net out. "Here you go, Maeko-chan!"

"I can pay myself-" Maeko began to say before the net was held out. "Thank you, though." She finished.

She hadn't noticed the flimsiness of the net, assuming the aim of the game was just to keepup with the fast fish.

"Gotcha!" She said, grinning as she pulled the net thoguht the water far too fast, breaking it.

"Ah, it just went through?" She was surprised for a few seconds but then it dawned on her that she'd misunderstod how the game worked. "Oh well." She added cheerily.

Kanaye chuckled. "If you insist, Maeko-chan." he said with a smile, watching mirthfully. Should he really be this happy about watching his girlfriend make a fool of herself?

Oh well. He simply smiled at her again. "You want to try again?" he asked.

Kanaye chuckled. "If you insist, then." he said as he waved goodbye to the stall owner, who looked kind of annoyed but waved back anyway. He held out his hand again. "What shall we do know, Maeko-chan?" he asked with a smile.
