The children race away, giggling, shrieking, scrambling for cover. "Ssh!" they hiss. Hands over mouths, they desperately try to be still and silent, avoiding discovery.

The hunter seeks her prey. A sound? She changes direction, digging into dirt with heels and toes. Running, laughing, she stretches her arms wide, fingers splayed. Her head moves side to side, nostrils flared, eyes and ears alert, every sense awake as she searches.

A call rings out: Children, come! Time to go home!

Images drift through an imprisoned mind, body immobile in a neatly tucked hospital bed.

Only even breathing escapes Aya-chan's open lips.

"Refrigerator, stove, shower, chemical toilet. Yohji-kun, stop whining. You're an assassin, not a princess."

"I deserve my comfort. Where the hell do we *sleep*?"

Blue eyes sparkle. "The top pops up. There are big, comfy futons."

"There's no... privacy..."

"Well... um... we're all such *good* friends, I'd hoped... I mean, it might be fun if..." Blushing, lashes lowered.

Yohji's hooked, grinning.

Enter Aya and Ken. "It's *pink*!"

Omi smiles.

The mission went wrong in seconds. Well-armed reinforcements blocked the expected exit. Explosives set, Omi and Ken were already away.

Spinning, leaping, sensing each other's moves without thought, Yohji and Aya cut a desperate path with gleaming, dripping wire and katana. The building spit them out in a blaze of flame.

Bruised, exhausted, clinging to shadows and each other, they found the safe house, fell through the doorway, struggled to remove bloody boots. Shedding weapons and clothes, they managed a few more steps before collapsing together.

Holding Aya close, touching his hair, caressing porcelain skin, Yohji relaxed. Home at last.

Nagi perched on a kitchen chair, arms wrapped around bent knees. He'd been unnaturally silent for days, unresponsive even to Schuldig's abrasiveness.

Crawford's eyes displayed concern. Gently he asked, "Nagi-kun, what's bothering you?"

Perhaps the boy was lonely, or bored, as they all were, in the alien calm following Esstet's fall. Or something deeper; could it impact the team?

"Parental now, Crawford? A little late." Nagi uncoiled and left the room, back stiff.

Crawford let his eyes return to normal. Another approach, then. He needed the boy back in line. Perhaps harshness would be more effective. He'd try that tomorrow.

"Get in. She's off limits." Who?

I flounce into the seat, admiring the hard, tight body of my arrogant leader. I'll expect appropriate compensation tonight; good smut, after all, is hard to find.

...and saw a building collapsing into rubble, burying another redhead and his companions under surging waves.

Breathing grew ragged. Vision blurred.

Steeling her heart, she forced memories away. The past was past. She had Aya-chan to consider, Kritiker at her heels, and other agents to guide through unspeakable missions.

She drank plum wine, denying grief.

A soccer ball rolled nearby. His body responded, dancing past strangers, spinning, flying, kicking, as if pure physical force might obliterate pain, recover innocence.

Suddenly a small woman in goggles attacked, wielding a menacing... guitar?

With inhuman force and agility, she drove them apart, smashed Farfarello against a wall, clobbered Ken into a rosebush. Tossing the guitar onto her shoulders, she sauntered off, flashing a cocky grin.

Ken and Farfarello, shaking off dizziness, locked eyes in quick agreement. Abandoning play, they hopped on their bikes to pursue the scintillating stranger.

Crawford was dumbfounded.

The simple contract hadn't required the specialized skills of his team. He just had to walk in, neutralize an insignificant target, and walk back out.

He'd foreseen neither bodyguards nor women before approaching the office.

The blonde somersaulted over the first bodyguard easily, shooting him as she landed.

The brunette, swinging upside-down from the ceiling, garroted another with his own tie, then lightly flipped to crouch in front of the desk, gun ready.

Firing together, they eliminated both the target and Crawford's anticipated profit.

Annoyed, Crawford turned. Pointless to continue. The French bimbos had screwed him again.

He was beginning to get a nice buzz, and almost ready to forgive their faux-pas in taking out his target today. Their gesture of apology, a fine French dinner, was turning out quite nicely. Escargots, coq-au-vin, perhaps pâtisserie et café-au-lait plus tard....

He savored his wine, anticipating the coming feast.

Acquiescence. With a lingering sigh, the wraith melted into the shadows.

Touching the sleeper's face gently with a gloved hand, the boy brushed away tears. He turned to walk away, head bowed.

Yohji stirred, dreaming, and breathed Asuka's name.

Yohji worked his way through the crowd, swept an arm around narrow shoulders. Grasping gloved hands, he pulled the dark-haired boy toward the dance floor. The boy fit easily into his arms, relaxing to the slow beat. His body was pliable, responsive.

Leaning down, Yohji tasted his warm, sweet lips. Suddenly a tall, dark stranger cut between them. The cold glance chilled Yohji to the bone before discarding him.

Glad to be alive, Yohji collapsed on a barstool and ordered another drink.

Title: Battle on a Rainy Afternoon

The stranger with oddly bleached hair wandered in out of the misty rain and struck up a conversation with Aya, who hadn't spoken five words since breakfast.

Unexpectedly, Aya accepted the challenge. Tension grew; tempers frayed as each parried his opponent's subtle attacks. Omi fretted; Ken cheered; Yohji smoked.

The battle raged in deadly, hypnotic patterns for an hour, moving outside when the rain stopped. At last, between the hyacinth and creeping cereus, a clear victor emerged.

Aya had lost. Badly. He stalked off, wounded.

With polite thanks, Hikaru Shindou collected the black and white Go stones and headed home.
