Lexie could think of very few worse ways to spend your birthday than in a hospital. The nurses had tried to be extra-nice to her and her family had been in and out when they could, but as much as Lexie tried to smile, she couldn't really get over the fact that she was spending her birthday in a hospital. The past few days had been rather miserable - the doctors still hadn't figured out exactly what was wrong with her and it looked like an extended stay might be a possibility, especially since even Mr. Drake wasn't exactly sure what was wrong. It was the first time in Lexie's life that she really regretted her ability to heal - although she hadn't had it for long, she'd always seen it as a wonderful blessing, a way to help the world. And maybe it still was. But right now, it was possible that it was that same gift that was blocking her from getting any better, and there was nothing Lexie would've loved more than to get better. That, really, was the best birthday present she could've asked for.
Lexie sighed softly and propped herself up on her pillows a little more so it would be easier for her to reach the laptop with which her parents had so graciously furnished her. She'd been practically living on the thing, checking her email and signing into AIM whenever she could, just so she could get some human contact. Despite the many long hours she'd spent alone in her room prior to her hospital visit, now that everyone knew about her illness she suddenly longed to make up for all the socializing she'd missed during her weeks of hermit-like solitude. She put the computer aside, however, when the door handle turned.
"Eisen!" she exclaimed, her face lighting up. Real human contact was much better than the virtual kind. "Hi!" She was a little grateful that she wasn't hooked up to a heart monitor or anything, since her pulse had definitely quickened as soon as he entered the room.
