Events: Last night’s debate is a big topic of conversation around Haven. The matter concerning bandits has people nervous, but they
are talking about it. The average citizen is careful not to edge into anything resembling treason, but many are imagining what it would be like if the Council decided to make such an offer. There is also a good deal of anger at the idea. This is made clearest by a series of public network posts from family members of soldiers slain or permanently injured over the wall. By 11 AM, there’s a small protest group forming outside of City Hall. Within half an hour, there’s
another small group outside of the home of Maxwell Wallace. It’s mostly peaceful, but there are a couple of signs with pictures of pretty gruesome injuries done at the hands of bandits.
A pretty big snowstorm is anticipated, so no one’s all that surprised when the snow starts. At 6 PM fat wet flakes begin falling hard. Road conditions quickly become slick and treacherous, severely slowing down the speed of the trams. Within an hour of the start of the snow, it’s pandemonium. The snow is falling hard and fast enough to create a very quick accumulation and white out conditions. To make things worse, the snow is mixed with sleet. By 7, shards of ice are pelting down like arrows. Warnings begin going out over every possible medium to seek shelter and stay there. The weather conditions have been classified as a maelstorm.
The term ‘maelstorm’ for severe weather was coined shortly after the founding of Haven. The world evolved. Flora, fauna, and humanity itself mutated. And in rare cases, the world sees storms that reflect that. These storms are severe, deadly, and often have very strange and unpredictable effects. The last official maelstorm was 11 years ago, in July of 2204. That storm produced extreme heat, hurricane winds, and a small sinkhole opening up just outside of Haven that omitted noxious fumes. The storm lasted only a few hours, but for two days after the fumes caused strange side effects to any military that happened to inhale them - including an entire unit that switched powers for a couple of days. The maelstorm before that, in August of 2199, lasted only fifteen minutes. Haven was on the outskirts, but from the wall green snow appeared to be falling on the horizon.
There’s no telling what this storm could bring, but the ice is falling hard enough to do heavy damage - including breaking windows. Some areas in every district will lose power.
It’s worth noting that the maelstorm is centered almost precisely on Haven; it is
not touching the Diaspora camps, though they are experiencing some snow. More alarmingly, one of their scouting teams - the team of Rika Underhill - never returned. Today a scout will return to camp, informing the elders that he found the body of her companion, Ricky. No one knows where Rika is.
