TIME UPDATE

Friday, February 3rd, 2215

Weather: Bright and sunny, with a brief flurry in the early afternoon.

Events: It's Friday night, which means there's lots to do in Haven. Of course, Otherworld is still all the rage, but there's always other options out there. A movie theater in the west district is having a black and white film festival tonight, with half off concession vouchers to anyone in costume. A bar across the street promptly mooches off the idea, offering no cover charge to those with ticket stubs.

Things in the Diaspora camp are pretty tense. The elders still haven't made it known if they've decided what they're going to do about the situation, and the people all have some pretty strong and varied opinions. A large-sized group starts preemptively packing, running on the assumption that camp will have to move in the very near future. Many are saying the soldiers should simply be killed, because were the tables turned, it's what the Havenites would do. And of course, there's always the odd doomsayer or two. One parks himself outside the communal dining tent before breakfast and starts ranting about how it's all a sham and that Haven is trying to lure them into a trap with false information. At some point, someone knocks him out just to shut him up. No one seems to know (or care) who. Things are slightly worse come sunset, when another guy gets drunk on some bad moonshine and starts running around and shouting about how the only way to survive is for everyone to leave the Diaspora and go their separate ways. That actually triggers something of a panic in sections of the camp, and it's quite the pain in the ass for rational, empathic souls to calm things down.

TIME UPDATE

Thursday, February 2nd, 2215

Weather: The sun comes out, adding to the general slushyness of Haven.

Events: Haven's still all buzz over Otherworld. It's all anyone seems to be talking about. Besides that, the old pre-cat film Groundhog Day is playing today only at a theater in the west district. Groundhog Day isn't observed in Haven - it's one of those things used to laugh at the silly superstitions of pre-cat society, but fun films are fun films.

Things are very busy at the Diaspora camp. Around noon a scout enters the communal dining tent, and says he has the whole story - because he was one of the scouts that brought them in.

This scout - a man in his early 50s by the name of Flint - has a really good reputation in the camps. He’s a hard worker, and a dedicated scout, known to have a good head on his shoulders. He also likes to talk though, and talk he does. Flint tells a tale of coming across two heavily wounded men while patrolling with a few other scouts. Initially, they had no idea who the men were - their conditions were so poor, their wounds so grievous. Flint describes them as being covered in wounds and burns, drenched in blood, and improperly dressed against the elements. One of them was missing several fingers, with the wounds cauterized shut. Upon encountering other human beings, they simply collapsed. At that point the scouts began tending to their wounds, mistakenly assuming them to be fellow Diaspora. At one point one of the men woke up and announced himself to be Haven military - a mere breath before begging for help. Flint made the decision that they should be brought back to the elders. There, the one coherent soldier tells the group that he and his unit had been scheduled to return to Haven on the day of the maelstorm. They tried to take cover as best they could, and all experienced a great sense of disorientation. When it was over and their heads cleared, they found they were in unfamiliar territory. Shortly thereafter, the entire unit was attacked and captured by NYC bandit gangs.

At that point, the story gets a little unbelievable - at least to the average Diaspora. The soldier insists that there is an actual army of bandits in the city that have taken over Manhattan. Many different gangs have banded together, with a mind to set out and conquer new territory. From that point out, the unit was subjected to a constant stream of torture. Flint refuses to repeat some of the ‘atrocities’ described, but it was apparently pretty brutal, even by city gang standards. The soldier insists that the army is planning to march on Haven, and anything that stands in their way. And yes, this includes the Diaspora.

Apparently a scout called bullshit on the idea that two wounded soldiers could escape, but Flint put forth the idea that they could have been intentionally allowed to escape to tell people what was going on. At any rate, from that point on the elders dismissed all the scouts.

Flint’s story makes the rounds pretty quickly, and finally the elders call everyone to an announcement at about 6 PM. They confirm Flint’s story to be true, and announce that they have decided to help the wounded soldiers and send them back to Haven when they are well. Nothing else regarding the story the soldiers tell has been decided, but they’re sending out every available scout in parties to try and confirm the information.

The Diaspora camp is full of buzz today. Initially it’s a lot of gossip, with a lot of the circumstances changed around one core fact - there are Haven soldiers in the camp. How and why that came to be is up for a lot of discussion at first. There are all kinds of rumors - everything from how it’s the start of the rebellion, a mutiny in the armor, or lost soldiers with amnesia due to the latest maelstorm. There doesn’t seem to be anyone with solid information, and the elders are NOT commenting on the situation yet.

TIME UPDATE

Tuesday, January 31st, 2215

Weather: The rain continued through the night and most of the morning, making it a dreary, slushy day.

Events: In the news today, the body of Maxwell Wallace was found by a relative this morning. It is made known that he appears to have died of a suicide, but no additional information is being released to the public at this time.

Beyond that, it’s business as usual in Haven. The Council releases a statement that they have exciting plans for the coming year, and promises to release additional information ‘in the very near future.’ No one really knows what this could mean, though.

The Diaspora are busy today, as they are packing up and moving to a new campsite. It’s pretty routine for them - every couple of months they move to a new location. This one is a bit earlier than anticipated. Usually they stick to one camp for the majority of the winter, if at all possible. With Rika on the inside and Ricky dead, however, the elders have made a call that it’s probably better to move now. No one really imagines Rika of giving them away, but the sad truth is they still have no idea how Ricky died, and if anything incriminating was found on his body by Haven soldiers. Most of the morning is spent packing up, and then the Diaspora travel together in a caravan. A small group stays behind to cover tracks and make sure nothing important is left behind. The new camp is some fifty miles to the north, and just slightly to the east. Strategically, it offers pretty good cover and concealment. There’s a lake, a large clearing, and forests all around. Without crossing the lake, there’s only one point of entry - a path that must have once been a road through the forest, and it can be guarded very easily. The rest of the day is spent settling in - putting up tents, doling out resources… all pretty standard stuff.

TIME UPDATE

Monday, January 30th, 2215

Weather: It’s a dark, cloudy day. The overcast skies finally give in to freezing rain shortly after noon, and keeps on until well into the evening.

Events: To the surprise of some, elections continue. Starting at 7 AM citizens of age are encouraged to go to their designated polling places and vote on the Council elections - despite heavy pressure from some groups to see Maxwell Wallace investigated and prosecuted. Wallace, for the most part, is MIA. Gossip is that he asked a relative to watch after his daughter, and no one’s 100% sure where he is for the remainder of the day. There’s a few picketers outside of his home, but lights never come on to indicate that anyone is inside.

The polls close at 7 PM, and by 9 officials are able to confirm: Kieran Sullivan keeps his seat, by a landslide. Shortly thereafter Sullivan throws a raging party at the Dovetail Club, accompanied by Piers Abrams and Rollin King. It’s considered by many to be slightly inappropriate considering current events, but something of a tradition for the three all the same. The three are known to favor the brothel, and on election nights they throw amazing parties - with free drinks and other, ah, entertainment for anyone lucky enough to get in the door. Expect the club to remain packed to capacity until the early morning hours.

TIME UPDATE

Sunday, January 29th, 2215

Weather: No changes.

Events: Anyone waiting for Julia Burke to go public with what information she has on Elena Maxwell will not be disappointed. On today’s news, she drops a bombshell on Haven: she has Elena’s suicide note. It is explained that Elena gave her the key to a locker room, and told her to open it after work. When Julia did, she found a letter, which she reads on-air.

“By the time you read this, I will be dead. I have lived a life of private misery and guilt, my shame and loathing being saved for times behind closed doors. I find I can no longer bear it. It has to end, and this is the only way I know to end it.

It is selfish, what I’m about to do, but I can no longer bear the burden of living with what has been done. What I allowed to happen. What I pretended not to know.

In July of 2207, when my son was only seven weeks old, an old friend of my mother’s visited my home with a gift. What she gave us instead was a curse. Henrietta Crosby had the power of gift detection. She held my son in her arms and said in passing, ‘it’s a shame that he is ungifted, but a great blessing that he should have parents such as you. At least you will see that he is well taken care of.’ My husband was beginning to make a name for himself as a ‘champion’ of the underdog, and I know she meant well. She did not see the darkness in Maxwell’s eyes when he learned his son was ungifted.

For the following week Maxwell was cold and distant. He lashed out when approached, and accused me of adultery, for no son of his could be a ‘weakling.’ He raged on about the stain to his family’s honor, and how this would ruin his political aspirations. I urged him not to fear our son’s condition but embrace it. If Max was truly ungifted, I said even that could work in his favor. He could campaign for greater rights for the ungifted. Perhaps our son, my precious boy, was a stepping stone towards equality. And then my baby was found dead in his crib, and they told me ‘sometimes these things happen.’ But I knew the truth. I knew in my heart that Maxwell had killed him. He refused to speak with me on the matter for weeks, until we fought and he insisted ‘whatever I did, I did for the good of the family.’ He struck me then, and from that day on I have lived in fear of him. He told me to hold my tongue for the good of our daughter, and I did. But he is a monster. He has abused me in every way a husband possibly can abuse his wife, but I would suffer a thousand deaths if it could bring my son back.

Lacey’s powers manifested this year, and I know she will be safe. I can no longer live with the guilt. My husband is a hypocrite, climbing to power on the backs of the people that disgust him. This is the best way I know to stop him.

Please tell my story. Have my ashes mixed with those of my son, though I am unworthy. I could not protect him in life. Perhaps I can do so in death.

-Elena Maxwell”

Julia turns her information over to the police after her broadcast, and it seems one of the first tasks is confirming that it is written in Elena’s handwriting. But honestly, from there things are a bit chaotic. Maxwell Wallace has just been accused of an unspeakable crime, and the only witness is dead. Henrietta Crosby has been dead for several years, so even she can’t confirm whether she ever told the Maxwells their son was ungifted. To make matters worse, Maxwell II’s body was cremated, so there’s no hope of finding anything there. By the end of the day Maxwell Wallace is in hiding with his daughter, and the officials still can’t say if they’re going to prosecute.

Elections are tomorrow. What will this mean?

TIME UPDATE

Saturday, January 28th, 2215

Weather: No changes.

Events: Shortly before six PM, there is breaking news being reported across all mediums: Elena Wallace, wife of Maxwell Wallace, is dead - of an apparent suicide. Early on there is almost no information, other than the fact that her body was found by a maid, and in some matter that heavily hinted towards a suicide. It’s all pure speculation as to what is going on, until around 7 PM. On the evening news it is reported that Elena Wallace visited the news station at around 11 AM, and asked to speak with news anchor Julia Burke. Witnesses state that Mrs. Wallace appeared worn and disheveled, with red eyes and no make-up - which was rare for a woman always seen at her best. She did not stay long, only long enough to give Ms. Burke a slip of paper and speak quietly. What was on that paper is, at this point, entirely unconfirmed - but rumored to be something of a suicide note. More information is sure to follow tomorrow.

In the meantime, people are wondering how - if at all - this will affect the upcoming election. Elena is, of course, survived by her husband Maxwell, and their eleven-year-old daughter, Lacey. She is predeceased by her son, Maxwell II, who died in infancy eight years ago. Along with her husband, Elena Maxwell was a beloved public figure, known for getting her start as a ballerina and later opening her own dance studio geared towards children.

Police are investigating this matter further, and it is believed Julia Burke will be reporting on the situation tomorrow.

TIME UPDATE

Friday, January 27th, 2215

Weather: The snow stops and there’s actually a very slight rise in temperature by a couple of degrees.

Events: The fundraiser being hosted by Maxwell Wallace is tonight. It’s generating a lot of buzz, as it’s pretty unusual for any high society function to be open to all classes. There’s some speculation going around as to how well it will be received, but those expecting big shocks and surprises might be disappointed. When the doors open at 7, there’s no real hint that this party is any different than any other high class gala. Attendants of all classes mix politely together, and even a couple of Councilmembers show up to play nice. There’s dinner and dancing, and generally the party is considered a success by all those who attend.

There is a bit of gossip concerning the event, however. Around nine in the evening, Maxwell Wallace’s wife, Elena, pulls him aside, where they whisper back and forth to one another. Big deal, right? Well, after a few moments of this, she pulls him into the coat check closet. Heated arguments can be heard from behind closed doors, but no one’s really able to make out what exactly is being said. After a few minutes, Elena storms out and leaves the party without him. Maxwell makes polite excuses for her, saying that Elena’s been ill and needed to go home and rest, but no one’s really buying it. Interesting.

TIME UPDATE

Thursday, January 26th, 2215

Weather: Light snow on and off.

Events: A lot of people are talking about Maxwell Wallace's fundraiser set for tomorrow night, but there's not much else going on. It's a slow news day, and things are pretty calm. The good news is, slums aside, most of the damage from the maelstorm has been fixed. Yay!

TIME UPDATE

Wednesday, January 25th, 2215

Weather: No changes.

Events: With less than a week to go before the election, it is perhaps unsurprising that the two opponents are doing a bit of PR work. Several members of the council, including Kieran Sullivan, are making appearances around the city at various homes and establishments most damaged by the storm. Nothing too spectacular there; they inspect the damage, take notes, and in some cases offer up some form of compensation for losses. The most noteworthy thing about it is that they visit the slums, and it’s very rare for members of the Council to appear there. A few residents of the most severely damaged homes are given new housing, and even a little bit of money. It’s a nice, happy puff piece featuring heavily in the news.

There’s more, though. Maxwell Wallace, while extremely popular amongst the ungifted populace and slums residents, is not a particular favorite amongst the elite. He’s apparently seeking to remedy that. How do you cozy up to rich snobs? Fundraisers, of course. Invites and notices have been sent out to much of the upper class for a black tie fundraiser gala this Friday night, but seeing as it’s Wallace there’s a bit of a twist. Any citizen of any district is welcome to attend, as long as they make a five dollar contribution at the door. There will be dinner and dancing, with all proceeds raised to be donated to the hospital rebuild efforts. The fundraiser will be held at Horizons Hall, an event center and private club in the east district.

There is a bit of news regarding their latest loss for the Diaspora today. Now that things are mostly back to normal after the maelstorm, military patrols and resource gathering groups are beginning to move again - which means information drops from Diaspora spies. Word will make it back to the camp today that Rika Underhill is on the inside of Haven, and posed as a 16-year-old. That at least explains why they took her into Haven. It may be of some comfort that she’s been accounted for and confirmed alive.

TIME UPDATE

Tuesday, January 24th, 2215

Weather: No changes until early afternoon, when the clouds clear and the sun comes out.

Events: Things around the city are functioning as usual again, but many businesses and residences are still repairing the damages caused by the maelstorm. Boarded up or plastic covered windows are common all over town, but those with the means to see to the repairs are steadily getting on with it. It's somewhat of a bigger problem in the slums. Even if one had the money to pay for a new window professionally installed, any professional is going to put customers in the better districts first.

A couple of businesses in various districts have decided to make the best of the situation and try to fund their repairs with various events to draw in more business. The Ivory Club, a piano bar in the west district, is having open mic night. Meanwhile the Stone Maid, the granite district’s brothel and tavern, is advertising pajama party nights all week long. Yeah, that’s exactly how it sounds.

TIME UPDATE

Monday, January 23rd, 2215

Weather: Cold and overcast. Back to normal, more or less.

Events: Shortly after midnight power is returned for all upper districts. Power is restored for all middle class districts by dawn, lower class by nine, and the slums by noon.

The furies have apparently given Haven up as a lost cause and retreated. There's still a great deal of damage all over the city, either from the weather or by the furies themselves, and the clean-up efforts are going pretty strong. Clearing the roads is a big priority after the power is returned, and tram services are more or less restored by lunch.

Beyond that? Very quiet day. Better take advantage of that to regroup and relax, eh?

[info]containmentmods

TIME UPDATE

Sunday, January 22nd, 2215

Weather: See events.

Events: The storm stops abruptly at about 5 AM. Literally, at one moment the storm is still in full force, and the next it just stops. Strangely, the clouds above the city are still rumbling, and there is a bit of lightning for about twenty minutes. Then things are perfectly calm. Through the rest of the day the clouds clear out, and things are surprisingly sunny. Which doesn’t help anything considering the amount of ice that’s covered Haven.

The city’s a mess. Broken windows, ice and glass everywhere, downed power lines, collapsed trees… oh, right, and an additional three feet of fresh, icy snow on top of all of it.

The trams aren’t functioning today. There has simply been too much damage to the roads and lines that the Council deems it wisest to cancel all public transformation during the clean-up. Private cars are sent to fetch the workers needed for clearing out the roads and doing what repairs are deemed necessary. Restoring power is a pretty major issue, as many different areas have been hit with outages. As always, the wealthier districts are a first priority.

Buuuut… there’s a problem. A very big problem. With wings.

They’re called the furies. A massive species of eagle initially mutated from the harpy eagle. Before animal species mutated, the harpy eagle was the largest and most powerful raptor in the animal kingdom. Furies are practically twice their size, coming in around 32-40 lbs, with a nearly nine foot wingspan. Their talons are anywhere from 8 to 11 inches long, and their beaks are razor sharp. They are pure black, with a silvery sheen to their plumage. And they’re fast.

Here’s the deal. Furies typically don’t go anywhere near Haven, but the military does have some limited experience with them in the wild. The best guess the experts can offer is that the several giant flocks of them terrorizing Haven starting at about 8 in the morning is that it’s something to do with the maelstorm. Basically, the storm and electrical activity that followed acted as a sort of beacon to them. Messed with their migratory patterns.

Furies are predators, and they eat whatever kind of meat they can get their talons on. In the wild they’re known to take down anything from deer to wolves with absolutely no problem. All day today they’ll be swooping down on anything they view as potential prey. The military is called to duty to round them up, and citizens are urged to go out at their own risk - and definitely keep any animals or small children inside.

It’s worth noting that they’re attracted to the color red, and the scent of blood. Have fun with that.

Power is ONLY restored to the upper class districts today. The furies make it too difficult and dangerous for the workmen to restore any more than that.

TIME UPDATE

Saturday, January 21st, 2215

Weather: See events.

Events: Last night’s debate is a big topic of conversation around Haven. The matter concerning bandits has people nervous, but they are talking about it. The average citizen is careful not to edge into anything resembling treason, but many are imagining what it would be like if the Council decided to make such an offer. There is also a good deal of anger at the idea. This is made clearest by a series of public network posts from family members of soldiers slain or permanently injured over the wall. By 11 AM, there’s a small protest group forming outside of City Hall. Within half an hour, there’s another small group outside of the home of Maxwell Wallace. It’s mostly peaceful, but there are a couple of signs with pictures of pretty gruesome injuries done at the hands of bandits.

A pretty big snowstorm is anticipated, so no one’s all that surprised when the snow starts. At 6 PM fat wet flakes begin falling hard. Road conditions quickly become slick and treacherous, severely slowing down the speed of the trams. Within an hour of the start of the snow, it’s pandemonium. The snow is falling hard and fast enough to create a very quick accumulation and white out conditions. To make things worse, the snow is mixed with sleet. By 7, shards of ice are pelting down like arrows. Warnings begin going out over every possible medium to seek shelter and stay there. The weather conditions have been classified as a maelstorm.

The term ‘maelstorm’ for severe weather was coined shortly after the founding of Haven. The world evolved. Flora, fauna, and humanity itself mutated. And in rare cases, the world sees storms that reflect that. These storms are severe, deadly, and often have very strange and unpredictable effects. The last official maelstorm was 11 years ago, in July of 2204. That storm produced extreme heat, hurricane winds, and a small sinkhole opening up just outside of Haven that omitted noxious fumes. The storm lasted only a few hours, but for two days after the fumes caused strange side effects to any military that happened to inhale them - including an entire unit that switched powers for a couple of days. The maelstorm before that, in August of 2199, lasted only fifteen minutes. Haven was on the outskirts, but from the wall green snow appeared to be falling on the horizon.

There’s no telling what this storm could bring, but the ice is falling hard enough to do heavy damage - including breaking windows. Some areas in every district will lose power.

It’s worth noting that the maelstorm is centered almost precisely on Haven; it is not touching the Diaspora camps, though they are experiencing some snow. More alarmingly, one of their scouting teams - the team of Rika Underhill - never returned. Today a scout will return to camp, informing the elders that he found the body of her companion, Ricky. No one knows where Rika is.

TIME UPDATE

Friday, January 20th, 2215

Weather: Very sunny conditions, but no great change in temperatures. Supposedly a major storm is coming sometime this weekend, but you’d never be able to tell today.

Events: After the antics caused by Saito’s sympathizers yesterday, many are nervous as to what today might hold in store. As it turns out? Nothing. Security is tightened all around the city, and nothing unusual seems to occur.

The big political debate between Councilman Kieran Sullivan and his challenger, Maxwell Wallace is tonight at 6. The event is open to the public at city hall, but space is extremely limited. Luckily enough, the debate is televised.

Under normal circumstances, the citizens of Haven might not care much about such a thing. The debate is a formality; it is still highly unlikely that Wallace could ever unseat Sullivan. But with recent events, there’s a bit more interest. The crowd to get in to see the debate is a bit larger, and many are turned away. It’s perhaps all the more interesting considering how extremely popular both Sullivan and Wallace are. Sullivan is one of the crowd favorites of the Council - he has a friendly image, comes from humble beginnings, and is often regarded as an honest to goodness war hero. While many members of the Council are intimidating and unapproachable, Sullivan is one that you might want to have a beer with after work. At the same time, Wallace is incredibly popular within the ungifted population and in the slums. His platform is equal rights for ungifted citizens, and should he be elected, he aims to see an eighth chair placed on the Council - one to be filled by an ungifted to represent their own people.

Obviously this matter is talked about a great deal in the debate. Sullivan seems sympathetic to the issue, but does have several sensible arguments. The greatest of them being, quite simply, even if Wallace was elected, the rest of the Council would have the power to out-vote him on the matter. No one man is going to change the system by himself; Haven is and always has been ruled by a group, and not an individual. Sullivan quite charmingly suggests that Wallace is trying to buy his seat with promises he knows he could never keep. Wallace responds by saying even if he could not manage the feat on his own, at least the ungifted populace would know they have an ally on the Council - a luxury they have never been concretely able to claim before. Sullivan also points out the old standard argument - Haven was formed by individuals of each cohort banding together and creating a safe place. In the event of another cataclysm, ungifteds have much less to offer, and must be cared for and protected. He also throws some simple math into the matter - an eighth seat on the Council could lead to a great deal of deadlocking, as it would become possible for the Council to tie on official matters.

As expected, the subject of a 16-year-old bandit girl recently liberated is brought up as well. Both candidates are in agreement that any child that can be saved should be saved. Sullivan confirms that this has always been their military policy, and have always gone by threat level, and not an actual age. At that point, Wallace drops a bomb on the crowd.

Oh no, not literally. Figuratively. He floors everyone listening by suggesting that Haven should offer terms of peace to any individual born to bandits.

”Not every living soul on the other side of the wall is a criminal. In fact, at this point I would say that the majority of those living in the wild - the bandits and so-called ‘Diaspora’ - are the children and grandchildren of those first men and women that managed to survive exile. These people have never set foot in Haven, are strangers to our ways, and guilty only of being born. They did not choose the circumstances of their birth, for if they had, I believe they most certainly would have chosen to be born in Haven, to law-abiding citizens. These newer generations continue to fight not against an enemy, but for their own survival. I believe that terms should be offered. Any human born over the wall, but wishing us no ill, should be allowed to surrender themselves to our justice, our kindness, our mercy, and prove themselves to be beneficial to society.”

He goes on to say that any bandit that continues to take up arms against them should be absolutely obliterated, but the statement is still shocking to the majority of Haven. Kieran Sullivan himself is practically stunned to silence. Those watching the event on television can hear the stunned and in some cases angry objections of the audience, and the moderator has to fight to silence them again. The idea of reintegrating adult bandits is unheard of in Haven. To most, it would be considered a threat to their security and safety. But Wallace has planted the seed of doubt in more than a few minds. There is great risk there, but logic as well.

The election is in ten days. At the end of the debate, bookies begin officially taking bets as to the outcome, offering Wallace surprisingly good odds, considering.

TIME UPDATE

Thursday, January 19th, 2215

Weather: Light to moderate snow flurries in the afternoon and evening.

Events: There is steady activity at City Hall today, preparing for tomorrow night’s political debate between Councilman Kieran Sullivan and his challenger, Maxwell Wallace. There will be limited space for those wishing to attend and watch in person, but the event will be televised. There is, at this point, no additional news about the sixteen-year-old bandit child recently brought into Haven. It’s rumored that she was moved from the military base in the night, but it has not been revealed to where.

That isn’t to say it’s a slow news day. Oh, far from it. Starting at around 8 in the morning, something strange is happening to Haven’s upperclass. Some are experiencing dulled reaction and response times, or just plain groggy and out of sorts. Some are even feeling a bit euphoric! Until they realize their powers seem to have disappeared.

For a couple of hours those affected in the upper class are in a state of panic. The hospital is flooded with patients, and each and every one of them tests positive for methylepithanaline - the drug known, on the street, as Deadhead. The drug is used in hospitals for suppressing powers during some procedures and operations, and for a host of other reasons as a recreational drug. Once doctors and authorities know what’s caused the problem - and that their powers will come back when the drug wears off - they start looking into how they got the stuff in their system in the first place. The answer floors the authorities.

Late in the morning, it is discovered that the water supply was poisoned at no less than a dozen popular upperclass businesses - mainly coffee houses and restaurants, but the Dove Tail Club was targeted as well. Everyone that reported symptoms and lost powers either got their breakfast or morning coffee in one of these establishments.

In each place, near the water supply, a copy of the transcripts of Alexander Saito’s trial is found nailed to the wall.

This likely means that all of the rebels under Saito have not been caught. And who knows what they’ll do next.

TIME UPDATE

Wednesday, January 18th, 2215

Weather: No changes. Ho hum.

Events: The man who built the bomb for Saito has plead guilty and been sentenced to death. This time, no public spectacles. It’s announced that he will die by lethal injection tomorrow afternoon. A few survivors and loved ones of the dead are rumored to be invited as witnesses, but it’s a much smaller affair than Saito’s death. Surprisingly, this isn’t the biggest news in Haven right now.

Liberated bandit children come in every once in a while, and while they always make the news, one is brought in this afternoon that’s a bit different. Reports come in first thing in the morning that a sixteen-year-old bandit girl is being transported to Haven. Children are almost always brought in before their teens, and the times a bandit over the age of fourteen has been brought in could counted on a single person’s fingers. These liberations are few and far between, and the event is something of a curiosity for the news.

It is reported that bandit teenagers are extremely difficult to liberate, as their parents fill their heads with hatred and lies about Haven. The paper reports that, usually, any child old enough to effectively wield a weapon will attack Haven military, so this girl being brought in is highly unusual. It’s also reported by the unit that rescued her that she approached them, asking for them to save her. No additional information about her is released, though there are a few shots of her being brought into Haven on the evening news. She looks more or less how the average Haven citizen would expect a bandit teenager to look - skinny, dirty, and dressed in layers. Also, pretty wide-eyed and bewildered by the attention.

There is some discussion on the news over what will happen to her, and whether or not it’s even safe to take on bandit children of her age. Surprisingly, there isn’t an official set age for saving bandit children. Military units have standing orders to attempt to liberate any child they come across, and they tend to use their own discretion as to what counts as a child. This issue may feature in the upcoming elections.

TIME UPDATE

Tuesday, January 17th, 2215

Weather: No changes.

Events: There’s a sense of normalcy in Haven, as people seem to be making the effort to go back to their normal way of life. The new construction/removal process at the hospital is off to a successful start, and even those working at the hospital are settling into a more standard routine, even if some of their surroundings have changed.

Haven’s newspaper reached out to the Council to see if the election would be postponed in light of the recent tragedy. Helena Vandermeer releases a statement on behalf of the Council, insisting that elections will still be held on the 30th. The debate between Kieran Sullivan and Maxwell Wallace has been rescheduled for this coming Friday. The Council will be very busy over the next few days, as they are attending to the trials of Alexander Saito’s alleged accomplices. The newspaper publishes a list of trials set for the week, including supposed go-betweens, co-conspirators, and the man that built the bomb. Several of the accused have already entered guilty pleas, and are expected to be banished. There is some speculation on whether or not the man who built the bomb would be sentenced to death if found guilty, but the Council refuses to comment on this.

TIME UPDATE

Monday, January 16th, 2215

Weather: Once again, the city is spared any snowfall, but temperatures remain in the freeze range.

Events: The new construction workforce has been chosen from the flood of applicants that came in after the announcement. Seems like a lot of people are willing to trade in some hard labor for the chance at a status upgrade. Making that top 15% is going to be rough work, though. Notices are going out to the chosen with crew assignments and instructions to report for duty. The Council is serious about getting the hospital rebuild underway. Teams will be working around the clock, continuing to clear rubble, bodies, and lay the foundation for the repairs.

Meanwhile, Haven media is busy covering the now-available trial records. It seems Saito had accomplices, and there may be more on the chopping block pending the results of their upcoming trials. A two-hour long news special airs at 8 PM tonight, going over the trial records, and even playing a few clips from the trial itself. Amongst the evidence is security footage of Saito at the hospital about an hour before the bombing, where he visits someone in the ER. At one point he steps into a corner of the frame obscured by a privacy curtain, and when he is visible again his coat is draped over his arm. It is argued by the prosecution that this is when he planted the device, which must have originally been concealed in his coat. Experts from construction and the fire department go over blueprints of the hospital and argue that the room Saito was in would have been precisely where the bomb originated from. An additional possibility is a nearby visitor’s unisex bathroom, which was only two doors away from the room he visited. There is footage of Saito going into this bathroom.

The most damning evidence against Saito comes from his daughter, Aya. She testifies that in the past few years, her father had grown increasingly critical of the Council and Haven’s ways in the privacy of their own home. He would constantly rant that someone had to change things ‘by any means necessary.’ Aya and her younger siblings were growing increasingly nervous, and she admits that some of the things he would say in the privacy of their own home were downright treason. She says at one point around in the autumn of last year, while she and her father were alone in his home, her father had mentioned that he wondered what life would have been like for them if the rebels that eventually became the Diaspora had triumphed in their cause and not lost. He had said ‘I have to wonder if things wouldn’t have been better that way.’ At this point, Aya says she told her father if he ever spoke that way in the presence of her younger siblings (who now vary in ages from 9 to 17), she would turn him in for bandit sympathies and fight for custody of her siblings. Aya insists that she was afraid her youngest siblings would endanger themselves by repeating their father’s opinions, not realizing what they actually meant. According to her story, Saito became emotional at that point and apologized, and swore to never again speak in such a way to his children.

Some months later, Aya left her father’s home to marry, but when her husband was over the wall on military business, she would frequently stay in her father’s home. She says that over the past year her father began taking private visitors in his home office, but would never say exactly what business they were discussing behind closed doors. As Saito had never in his long career with the DHS taken appointments in his home office, Aya found it to be a little strange. At the time she wrote it off, reasoning with herself that her father was getting older, and it must be easier to conduct what business from home that he could.

The day before the bombing, Saito posted something on the network that greatly alarmed Aya. She insists that while she knew parts of what her father said could have been argued as treasonous, she was again more concerned that it would create problems for her younger siblings. As she was staying in her father’s home at the time, she immediately went into his office, logged in on his computer, and deleted the post. When her father discovered what she had done they argued, and Aya again begged him to think of his children before his politics. Tearfully Aya confesses that she accused her father of being desperate for power, and self-destructing before her very eyes. Eventually Saito agreed to keep his feelings on the situation to himself, and not repost to the network on the subject.

On the morning of the bombing, both Aya and Alexander Saito were notified that a relative of theirs was in the emergency room with a strange illness. This relative had dined with the Saito family the night before, and had started showing disturbing symptoms about an hour after leaving the Saito residence. Aya made arrangements to visit the relative in the evening; Saito said he would go into the office late and visit in the morning. When Aya heard of the bombing, she panicked. She knew that her cousin was very likely to have still been in the ER when it happened - the only question was whether or not her father was still there. She tried contacting her father, first at the office, then at home, then on the comms. When he did not answer on any line, she went straight to his house, hoping he would be there. In a state of panic she searched his house, eventually going into his home office - a room previously forbidden to any of his children. There, in plain sight on top of his desk, was a set of blueprints to the hospital. At this point in the broadcast, a sound clip is played of Aya’s testimony.

"In my gut, in that moment, I felt that something was very wrong. I had an immediate sense of foreboding. A voice in my head said stop, turn around, leave this room, nothing good can come of this! But my body moved without my consent. I sat in my father’s chair and began pouring over all I found. He had a locked drawer. I tore the room apart in search of the key. I cannot say why I did this. I was sick with worry, and for whatever reason I fixated on that drawer. I felt as if getting inside would answer all of my questions, silence all of my fears. I found the key and unlocked the drawer. Inside were files of handwritten notes. Plans. He had names and aliases of bandit and rebel sympathizers. He had a list of experts in explosives, each ranked most to least likely to be ‘in line with the cause.’ He had pages of research in explosives and poisons. In one of these files I found a list of symptoms identical to what my cousin had presented at the hospital, and then everything clicked in my head. I knew."

The prosecution argues that Saito poisoned his own nephew, giving him a reason to later visit the emergency room. While his nephew died in the blast, the patient’s blood was drawn and sent to the lab before the explosion - and luckily, the lab is located on the opposite side of the hospital. His blood tested positive for the same poison alleged to be researched by Saito.

At that point, Aya called the police and Saito’s house was raided for evidence. Several alleged accomplices were located - several of which pleaded guilty to lesser charges and testified at Saito’s trial. Of these, none of them ever dealt with Saito directly. Coded messages were sent by private messengers, none of which understood the content of the messages they delivered. Each messenger was told only that it was official business for the Society for Cultural Preservation - an organization Saito was a member and supporter of. Representatives of the SCP testified that they had no knowledge or involvement of Saito’s doings.

Amongst the incriminating documents found in Saito’s home was an outline for a plan that started with several acts of terrorism, and ended with the overthrow of the Council, making way to establish a new form of government he would lead. The plan started with the bombing of the hospital, but also called for the destruction of several factories, farms, and even the water supply. There were reportedly several pages outlining the new government Saito envisioned.

Here is where things get a little puzzling, and facts give way to speculation. The trial took place in private at City Hall, often going late into the night. After his daughter’s testimony and all evidence from Saito’s home was presented, as well as the testimony of his alleged accomplices, the court adjourned to a six-hour recess. At this point, Saito requested to review the pages outlining his plans for a new government (labeled as exhibits 29 - 36). This request was granted, and Saito spent an hour reading and rereading them. He then requested to be taken back to his cell to rest. His guards report that in his cell, Saito sat on his bed silently and without moving for a little over three hours, when he then announced that he was ready to make a confession and change his plea from not guilty to guilty. His confession was dictated, read, and signed in the presence of his defense attorney. Court reconvened, and his plea of guilty was entered. The Council deliberated for less than an hour before sentencing him to death. In the time after that, Saito was calm and polite, and asked only that he would have a chance to say goodbye to his children. This request was also granted, though under heavy guard.

No one is sure why Saito changed his stance, and he himself refused to give any explanation as to why. The prosecuting attorney is quoted as saying, "He knew he was guilty, and that the evidence was damning. In the end I believe he decided to go out with a little dignity."

Aya and her husband have since been granted custody of her younger siblings.

TIME UPDATE

Sunday, January 15th, 2215

Weather: Finally, it’s stopped snowing. But it’s still freezing outside, so big yip.

Events: It’s back to business as usual for a lot of Haven. All military units have been ordered back to their normal duties. So, what does that mean for things at the hospital?

A lot, actually. There’s still a lot of rubble to clear, bodies to uncover, and not to mention the rebuild efforts. The hospital has done a temporary change of layout, turning one of the wards into their new ER. At 9 AM, the Council announces the more permanent plan for the hospital clearing and rebuilding efforts.

Here’s how it’s going to work. Any slums resident that has come of age can apply to be reassigned on the special hospital construction crew. On Monday morning, 500 of those applicants are going to be chosen and assigned. Their first task will be clearing the remaining debris, and then they’ll work with existing construction crews on the rebuild efforts. Salaries will be matched with what those 500 were already making at their previous jobs.

But here’s the catch. At the end of the rebuild, the top 15% of workers recommended by their supervisors will be taken into the construction field permanently, freed from their previous jobs, given a raise in salary, and elevated to the Granite district. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for the average adult slums citizen, and you can bet those limited slots are going to be greatly coveted. Sign-ups start immediately at City Hall, and by noon the line of applicants is already wrapping around the block.

Once the 500 have been assigned on Monday, work will begin immediately, with teams working in shifts around the clock. It has also been announced Prometheus Synthetics has been selected to help with the technology to be used in the new rebuild and restoration of the hospital.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch Diaspora camp, people are growing unsettled. The elders are usually tight-lipped about their interactions with their spies, but it hasn’t escaped their notice that something is going on in Haven. While all military was assigned to the hospital, no units were being sent beyond the wall on their routine duties. Which meant, no scheduled drops to the Diaspora from their plants. There are rumors going around that smoke was seen in Haven’s direction a few days ago, but nobody has answers. A lot of scouting groups are being sent closer to Haven than they usually dare.
