The first thing out of place was the obvious presence of very official looking wizards at the barrier to the Platform. At least it opened as usual for anyone who knew how to pass through - but inside the oddities were more obvious: Ministry officials and hitwizards posted throughout the Platform, checking the names of every student against some sort of list.

Bethanne Reynolds, a muggleborn second year in Hufflepuff, looked confused as the hit wizard asked her name, but she gave it easily. Beside her, a Slytherin boy whose name she didn't remember did the same, and after a moment was allowed onto the Express. The witch who was checking the list clucked her tongue, though, at Bethanne.

"Doesn't look like you're on the list here, dearie. Suppose you're not a witch after all. Off with you."

"But - " Bethanne didn't know what to say. Not then, and not when she was pushed out of line by the woman so that the student behind her could step up.

Soon it was obvious, all of the muggleborn students on the Platform that day were receiving the same treatment.

What: Tasty treats. Just gorgeous things, darling.
When: Not long after Fay's entry blew the hell up.
Where: Down by the edge of the forest.
Rating/Warnings: PGR? For exclaiming over pictures of men who aren't wearing very much, and also probably saying some mean and nasty things about their classmates.
Open/Closed: Closed, unless you think you're a member of the aforementioned group.

Fay rummaged in her truck for her "tasty treats" and arranged them in a shoulder bag. It was interesting to her that she'd managed to last a whole day and a bit before she'd needed to storm out of the dorm and find her friends. Normally she took one look at Granger and had to stalk out, nose in the air.

Perhaps this meant she was maturing. Her mother would be so proud.

At any rate, the idea of spending an afternoon out in the fresh air with people who weren't horrible was enough to put a spring in her step as she left the tower, flipping the bird at anyone who was in the common room and saw her leave.

Once she got to the edge of the forest she set out a blanket and charmed some cushions from their magically reduced size, back to big enough to sit on.

Some of the Slytherin first years looked nervous, even scared, as the large group of Slytherin students tramped downward toward the dungeons and, coincidentally, the Slytherin Dorms. At the word of a prefect, the password slid the portrait blocking their dorm entrance open, and students made their ways inside and began to settle in for the year.

Who: Anyone going to Hogwarts.
What: The train ride.
Where: Platform 9 3/4 and then the Hogwarts Express
When: September 1st, 11 a.m.

The Hogwarts Express leaves Kings Cross Station, London without fail at 11 a.m. on September First. It has done so every year, and will continue to do so, and this bright September morning was no exception. The bustle on the platform as families said goodbye was, perhaps, quieter than usual. More worried. With the rumours and evidence of dark happenings growing stronger every day, a large number of the parents were less happy about sending their children off.

Still, it was Hogwarts, and for many their only option, and so here they were, and what they lacked in good spirits they made up for in tight hugs and words of love, for the most part. Perhaps some felt better because it was Hogwarts, a bastion of safety for centuries, but the worry and trepidation was thick in the air of Platform 9 3/4 as students kissed their parents goodbye and boarded the scarlet train, ready (or not) for another year.
