(Not Quite) Everything There Is To Know About The DC Super Dictionary!
I'm here to tell you what I know about a certain Warner Educational Services book, published in 1978 by Holt, Rinehart and Winston.

We all know and love the Superdictionary, our beloved Cracktionary. But how much about it do we really know? In this post I attempt to gather some information on this delightful tome and its contents (though it will in no way be complete, as we all know it is mysterious and infinite in its crackiness).

Come and join me after the cut, and learn a bit about our favourite silly educational book!

[Warning: This post is very image-heavy. This post contains many images. There are so many pictures in this post, it may feel like heavy work for your dial-up connection to load them all. Load faster, dial-up!]

The Saga of Itty
I posted it over at the place I post stuff and I was told I "NEED" to post it for the world to see, and so I shall! The wonder of Itty should be given to the world, after all.

Dial-up warning: this post is epic big. Like, 40 images or something over about two decades, so proceed with caution if bandwidth is tiny; I've so been there.

So, what's in all this epic-ness? Cuteness! Tentacles! Alien sex! Hal intentionally crashing into a tree! Homoerotic tension with Ollie! Homoerotic tension with Barry! Hal in chains! Hal as a giant! It's all here, and more, in the more-or-less complete story of Hal's little buddy Itty. What is Itty, do you ask? He's one of the Ayries. They look like this:

It takes him about those twenty years to actually have lines, which does not stop him from being amazingly helpful. And adorable.

I really like the character and all, but I don't feel that big need to see him pop back up again. Would that be super-neat? Oh sure. But sometimes, the end is just so good that it leaves you with just that right feeling of closure.

Rob Liefeld's The Godyssey
This comic shows us a seldom-seen side of Rob Liefeld, who, lest we forget, is the son and grandson of ordained ministers: his spirituality.

Gates-chan is so kawaii!
Because there hasn't been enough brain-breaking in this community yet: Billionaires, by Takada Yuuki!

OK. So, a friend of mine posted a link to this particular comic back in February. This friend is... well, let's just say she shares several interests with slashers. Anyway. She urged everyone on her friends list to get this comic... so I did. And this is what I saw when I opened it.

Four Swords+ part three: "Day of the Tentacle"

(manga: read right to left)

A bit of a late entry, but part four should be back on track. Nothing to do with either Theme Week, but it does contain blatant subtext that even context can't make better. Unlike the other posts, this is less plot advancement and characterization and more of an eclectic collection of "special" moments in the series, but if you want to catch up on who these people are:

Previously, on Four Swords+... (CHUN-CHUN.)

Our hero, Link, was struck by a radioactive magic sword, from that day forward becoming Quadruplicate Lad.

The four Links could never really get along, even in the face of certain doom. So without the mightiest superpower of all to save them (it's teamwork), the merciless river rapids destroyed their stolen boat and sent the Links to an early, watery grave.

Of course, because this is Japan, that one Seduction of the Innocent moment is completely eclipsed by the homoerotic subtext that follows...in spite of the minor obstacle of all the characters involved being the same person. (God, I love this series.)

Really brings up the age-old question of "does that make it narcissism, incest, or masturbation" doesn't it?

...What's that? You say I've been skipping something? Oh, right. The entire plot. There's plenty of that, even with some subtext that's actually subtle, in the next installment. That bittersweet ending might still be coming, but it ain't here yet.

On the next Four Swords+...

Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love Evil

Cat/Bat - Superdictionary Style!
I have this thing where I sometimes read the Superdictionary as if it had a plot. This is the story of Catwoman and how she interacts with the Bats. (I must note that I am omitting a bunch of other Catwoman entries, but perhaps that's another story for another time.)

Four Swords+ part two: "Four's A Crowd" (and other unoriginal headlines)

(manga: read right to left)

Previously on Four Swords+...

One Link was not enough. (And Zelda was kidnapped, but that's not important. Yet.) So meet the Links!

It's all fun and games on the road: sparring, studying, and making Red do all the cooking. But then they discover something that threatens to tear their young group apart: They discover girls.

On the next Four Swords+...

And Other Inappropriate Uses Of Four Links

Four Swords+ part one: "My Anti-Drug is Crack"

(manga: read right to left)

At first, I didn't expect or even try to enjoy The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords+ manga. I looked at a few pages out of curiosity and it just seemed so silly and pointless, but...

...somehow I simply could not stop reading. I told myself it's just yet another cheap cashin on the part of a longlived cashcow videogame franchise, yet I can't bring myself to care. I mean, it's a comic about Link! Who is actually four Links! Links who bicker and cry and yell at each other but ultimately learn lessons about friendship and teamwork and fighting over girls, just like a Saturday morning cartoon. And of course despite being in a black-and-white manga, they can only distinguish each other by the color of their clothes, somehow. What's not to love about that? But when I saw there was even going to be a fifth, evil Link as the villain, that was the moment I knew I was hooked. A near-100% Link cast? Can't say no to that.

...And that is why 1 = 4.

On the next Four Swords+...

Gamemnae: One Crazy Atlantean Bitch
Today I bring you a few scans of Gamemnae. Gamemnae was one psychotic Atlantean bitch. She was cast from Atlantis cause of her long blonde hair. She was a member of the Ancients who tried to take control of Atlantis, and can cast things from her right breast! Don't believe me? She forsaw things as well.

DOPE WEEK ??!!
Maybe we'll get lucky and somebody will share scans of the classic Green Arrow & Speedy comics dealing with addiction. Or at least some of Tony Stark's embarassing alcohol moments.

All I can contribute for Dope Week on such short notice is this link to COMICS WITH PROBLEMS where there's scans of many anti-drug comics, as well as political and other public service themed topics.

Speed Doesn't Work That Way
I have a request...if anyone would take it. Does anyone have any scans they could post of the Atlantian Sorceress Gamemnae, the blonde chick who captured Aquaman and died by the hand of Manitou Raven? I'd appreciate it.

1971 = Huh???
So, before Crisis on Infinite Earths restarted the DC Universe in the 80s, whenever a new editor/writer took over a book they had to "explain" any changes they made. For example, when Superman was taken over in 1971 by editor Julius Shwartz after years and years and years of Weisinger's crazy, Silver Age crack, he had to come up with REASONS that the new Superman was less powerful, why kryptonite wasn't a problem anymore and why Superboy's parents were suddenly younger... WAIT. WHAT?

Yes, the 1970s Superboy had young, hip parents rather than bespeckled grandparents-- the "WB-Smallville" approach, if you will. I actually like the design of the new Kents and I agree with the overall idea. The problem? The STUPID reasoning they came up with for the change.

EDIT: rab62 has informed me that Murray Boltinoff was actually the editor for Superboy during this period. My bad; I thought Shwartz took over editing the whole Super-book family! *bows*
