So. About them errands, huh?
((Man. How about all that self-play. It's what I get for playing 90% of the characters, I guess. :p And also currently the only character who can fling himself around the kingdom in seconds, so the job of errand boy has fallen to him. Purah's really got to come up with something for Zelda.))

After contacting Zelda and ending up with a laundry list of things he needed to get, as well as a brief panic when she asked about the sign outside his house, of all things, Link shifted his focus to his new agenda: getting a bunch of girly stuff.

His life went awry somewhere along the line, and he wasn't quite sure where. As much as he missed his sister, part of him was glad his early teen years weren't plagued by a teenage girl potentially trying to cajole him into being her practice dummy for learning how to apply makeup and do fancy hair styles. There was a good chance Marin would've ended up more like their grandmother than their mother on that front, but even so, that was an arrow he'd dodged.

It wasn't even getting dressed up like a woman that would've bothered him- when he was growing up, women were the ones with the power, it wasn't exactly an insult to look like one, and he had to do that later to get into Gerudo Town anyway -it was the idea of being turned into what amounted to a science experiment that would've annoyed him. Being told to sit and stay and be subjected to whatever his handlers wanted to do would've driven him crazy.

That, and he remembered being an adolescent boy, and he knew how adolescent girls acted, and he and his sister probably would've driven each other up the wall and down each other's throats.

... he still missed her, though.

He forcibly shoved that subject aside and focused back on the task at hand, most of which was just taking pictures, but the first thing he had to do was something that he wasn't ... exactly looking forward to. For a myriad of reasons, not the least of which was 'fessing up to having not told the entire truth to Zumi and Yammo earlier about his relationship status with Zelda. Although before he could do that, he had to 'fess up to himself about it. His side of things wasn't anything he'd been... too untruthful about- there was nothing that he'd given any thought to (and fighting his brain to keep it that way was sometimes a challenge) -but he knew damn well what Zelda's side was. Sure, there honestly was the chance that the years had changed her, but he had a feeling in his gut that they hadn't. He'd probably hide behind that possibility for awhile yet, but it was something he was going to have to face at some point.

Sometimes he wished he'd worked harder at not avoiding dealing with emotions after his initial grief over Marin had passed. It'd make things a lot easier on him. His tendency to shut down had helped him save face when the kingdom's spotlight was on him, but now it was just making things messy.

Oh, hey, brain. Nice of you to drift back to that subject. Let's stay on task, hmm?

The women had made pretty good time, all things considered, as Link could see them just on the other side of Proxim Bridge as he approached it. He nodded in greeting to Brigo, who still was holding his position as guard, though what he was guarding and why, Link wasn't sure. Whatever made him happy and gave him purpose, Link supposed.

Yammo was the first to notice Link; she'd been watching their surroundings more, had more practice being aware of where monsters were or might be, and anyway, she'd told Zumi to feel free to enjoy their surroundings. Yammo was more likely to get to go out that way sooner than Zumi was, after all. May as well as enjoy it.

She tapped her partner's shoulder and pointed towards the approaching Link when she had her attention. "I wonder what's going on."

They met him halfway. "Are there problem spots coming up?"

Link shook his head. "No, nothing like that." He inclined his head back down the path. "Come on, we'll talk while we walk." He glanced at Brigo pointedly.

Both women raised their eyebrows at each other, but Zumi knew that Link wasn't going to say whatever was on his mind until they were away from prying ears, so she shrugged at Yammo and resumed walking, forcing herself to keep at a normal pace- the urge to hurry past the stranger so Link could get to the point warred with the urge to plant her feet and not face whatever it was that he'd tracked them back down to talk about. The look on his face made her think that there was bad news, and she didn't like bad news.

Once they were past the bridge and the path had started to turn a bit, she bit off a sigh and looked at him. "So what's going on?"

Link was fully expecting to be making the next two stops without much if any interaction with the locals, going to Rito Village first, then planning on jumping up to Goron City. He still wasn't sure which to go to first after that- Zora's Domain, or Gerudo Town. Both were going to involve more than a wave to anyone who happened to see him and said hello, and he wanted to get a chance to get his brain eased out of the messy subject it'd been stuck in for the last not-quite-hour.

He realized, however, upon reaching Rito Village, that the architecture there didn't give a lot of clues about the local styles and customs. He didn't have to be a fashion designer to figure out that Sophie was going to need pictures of the actual clothes worn by people there.

Well, he'd seen Amali up on the flight platform by the shrine, if any of people there would understand what exactly he was doing by holding up the Slate to take their picture, it was her.

So after getting all the way down to the deck that Fyson had lounged about and sulked on before getting directed to Tarrey Town before coming to his conclusion, he headed back up the wooden path that wrapped around the pillar of stone that sat at the center of the village. He paused to take a couple pictures of the signs of the stores, and a candid-and-therefore-not-very-good shot of a couple of the citizens whose names he didn't know.

Amali was alone up on the flight platform, her back to the village, watching out towards Warbler's Nest. She must not've noticed him walking by earlier when he landed at the shrine.

"Hey, Amali," he said, making sure his footsteps made a bit more noise that time than when he'd shown up, just to keep from startling her too much.

Despite the noticeable footsteps, Amali still startled a bit when Link spoke up, turning and staring at him, wondering when he got there. "Oh, Link. Hello." She smiled. "Here to borrow my husband again?"

Back up to the tower. Out of that clunky armor. He checked the time on the Slate; one-thirty in the afternoon. Okay, good, he didn't have to change plans and go down to Gerudo Town first so he caught Riju before she went to bed.

Which meant on went the Zora greaves and the armor that he felt vaguely uncomfortable wearing. The only reason he did at all was when he knew he was going to be at least knee deep in water, and the Ne'ez Yohma was just that- knee deep in water. Even though it was really all he had left of his best friend, its intention, and the fact that he would've turned her down, made it feel inappropriate for him to wear. Maybe if his answer would've been yes, or even a neutral 'I don't know yet,' he wouldn't feel awkward, or at least less awkward.

But for better or for worse, it had been made for him by one of the few people he was close to after Marin died, and his dearest friend all his life, and he couldn't quite bring himself to just hide it in the Slate's inventory and refuse to wear it because of its inappropriateness. If nothing else, it was helpful for him, and that's really all Mipha had ever wanted to do, long before he would've hit whatever arbitrary point in his growth that made her see him differently. Having her healing magic somehow felt different from the armor. The healing was always there, but the armor was tangible. He could feel it in his hands when he pulled it from the Slate's inventory, the way it fit perfectly- to an unnerving degree, because he wasn't sure exactly how she'd gotten his measurements that accurately without an old fashioned tape measure.

Properly dressed for wading around in Zora's Domain, he selected the Ne'ez Yohma shrine's travel gate and clicked 'travel.'

One thing he was grateful about the Domain- the weather was consistently moderate-to-warm, which meant that the water he had to wade around though there wasn't cold. The greaves and armor may have been waterproof, but they didn't block out the temperature difference between him and the water he was half-submerged in. So while he didn't like water much in general, he at least wasn't uncomfortable as he shuffled over the wet stone floor until he was on dry land and wasn't at risk of slipping and landing on his ass.

Zelda's instructions regarding the pictures for Zora Domain were about as vague as the ones for Goron City, though her reasons were somewhat different. Somewhat. Neither the Gorons nor the Zora wore what would qualify as clothes for the other tribes, but what she was wanting for visiting Goron City was more about practical, so not much was needed for him to do. Zora's Domain, however, she had grander designs for.

He just hoped she knew that she needed something she could either get up out of the way of the water by the shrine, or something water-resistant or -proof at least from the waist down. With that thought in mind, he made sure to get a picture of the little alcove the shrine was tucked in. Sophie would probably need that much at least.

Link decided to get the pictures before talking to Dorephan, just for the sake of making it easier to pry away from attempts at extended conversation. And, if nothing else, if he had to go look at Ruta before he could leave, at least he wouldn't accidentally forget to take the pictures at all from distraction.

Dunma and Rivan said hello to him as he passed by to take a picture of the Domain from the front, watched him curiously, but didn't press conversation as he went back into the Domain proper.

He felt weird, just walking around taking pictures, but the Zora at least knew that he was a bit weird and that he had technology that did equally weird things, so nobody really stopped to wonder at him too much.

If he were honest, he really didn't have much direction or plans with how he was taking those pictures- just walking around with the Slate up and occasionally tapping the screen to capture an image that looked interesting and vaguely useful. He circled around the central area, raising the Slate to see if the archway to the throne room up above would be of any use, slowing to a stop when the statue of Mipha came into the center of his view.

He lowered the Slate, studying the statue directly, looking at the face of his best friend, who'd been lost and left behind by time. He knew she was gone, for good now; he felt her spirit disappear after Ganon was sealed, relieved of her duty that had kept her trapped in the physical world that she no longer lived in.

That hurt. He was loathe to admit just how much, but it hurt all the same.

There was that long-suffering look again, accompanied by an equally long-suffering sigh. "Sidon, the only people who don't tower over me are women, unless they're Gerudo. And even then, a lot of 'em come close to me in height. I inherited my grandmother's build."

He shook his head. "I didn't used to get shit more than once or twice about it, but it has apparently become an affront to masculinity to not be tall and broad-shouldered in the last hundred years. I'm ready to start a riot the next time some guy looks at me and calls me scrawny."

Sidon was at once confused and sympathetic towards his friend's plight. "I would hardly think that height should cause someone to question one's gender, but you seem more broad in the shoulders than the Hylian women who have come to visit the Domain since Ruta was calmed."

Link looked up at him, fairly certain he heard a bit of disappointment in that statement. Sidon didn't want Link to run off just yet, that was obvious. And Link wanted to stick around; not only did the idea of suffering through make-up lessons not fill him with glee, but it was nice to talk to someone who he didn't feel on eggshells with.

Although if he was honest, those eggshells scattered around the ground between him and Zelda weren't as numerous now that the issue of Zumi was taken care. He'd fully register that after he'd gotten a chance to get home and not be running errands.

He sighed, following Sidon's gaze up towards the throne room. "I guess," he said. "I'll be back tomorrow afternoon, though. One way or another." He looked up at Sidon. "If you wanna come up with me, you can hear the plans for the day."

"Since I intend on being a part of these plans, I believe I should and I shall," Sidon said, that disappointment that he'd been trying to hide evaporating. Just try to leave him out of these plans. He defies you.

"Perhaps, Muzu," Dorephan agreed. "And may the gods and goddesses all be willing that we will have ample time to discover all the possible ways. But in the meantime, we should not let our guard slip, nor should we shut the door on the Beasts before we find any such other ways. This is not information we can afford to lose. I cannot turn a blind eye to the possibility that we may have had a far better chance at winning a hundred years ago if all of this knowledge had not been lost. It pains me to even think of putting another Zora life in the hands of Ruta, but it pains me more to think of losing one such life in the future because of our anxieties."

He looked at Link. "We will, as always, trust your judgment, Link. You have been a true friend, in the truest of senses, even putting your life on the line for us when your memory had turned us into strangers. We owe you a great debt. And to the queen, as well, for keeping the Calamity contained, where he could not destroy us completely, while you healed and could once again pick up the Sword."

He kept himself from looking in his son's direction, but part of him worried, very deeply, that Ruta might choose Sidon to take his sister's place at her controls. It had seemed to Dorephan that while the manual controls in the Beast had responded to anyone with the technological knowledge, it only intuitively responded to Mipha. He had a feeling the other Beasts had behaved similarly, and if so, then perhaps there had never been, nor would ever be, a choice in who was to be the Champion the next time the Calamity struck.

Don't worry, Dorephan, Link's not looking over there either, but he's certainly sharing that worry.

"There was a lot of information that was lost," Link said. "I can't say for certain if knowing how the Beasts worked better than we did at the time would've changed anything. Nobody can. But there's still a chance it might've bought the last bit of time we needed for Zelda's powers to awaken."

He wasn't going to go into why that happened when it did; not dirty laundry that needed airing. "We're working on preventing that from happening to a future royal daughter as well. All six of us were unprepared and under-informed. The issues with the royal daughters and the Sword are something we're stuck doing on our own, but Zelda and I can't do that and handle the Beasts without help. I don't like asking anyone to step up to this, but I will be damned if I let Mipha down by not doing what I can to keep her people safe."

There. Take that, Muzu.

The first thing he did when he was reassembled on top of the tower was take a shaky breath, followed by sitting down, because his knees didn't feel like they'd hold him much longer if he pushed them. He itched to beg the Sword to do something to at least help control when those not-his memories grabbed him and yanked him around time and space, but he knew she was already at her limit just trying to keep the dozen other men between the Hero of Time and himself from forcing their way into his head.

And it wasn't like his own memories weren't doing the exact same thing to him. Most of any of the memories dancing around his head didn't do more than jar him a bit, because they seemed so random, but every now and then, one like that jumped out of the shadows and knocked him off his feet. His own memories had enough moments like that to do the same. So he couldn't even be as frustrated with having not-his memories to contend with as he could if all of his own memories were trauma-free.

Although the implications of that particular memory were far worse than any memory Link had that was actually his.

The stand the Slate fit into to download information from the tower's Guidance Stone wasn't the most comfortable of things to lean back against, but it made his head make a satisfying 'thunk' when he smacked his head back against the smooth stone. He'd been hoping the knock to the skull would make that lingering not-his memory go away. It didn't work. A second try also failed. He didn't bother with a third, he was only going to end up with a headache if he did.

Zelda inevitably wanted to know how Ganon had ended up with a piece of the Triforce. Link had known it probably wasn't something he wanted to know, but might be important to know. Link was pretty sure he'd never heard of a better example of Be Careful What You Wish For.

Link took a few more deep breaths, held his hands out until they stopped shaking, then grabbed the Slate and retrieved his vai disguise from the inventory. He had a job to focus on, Zelda needed some things; too many miles to go before he could sleep. He switched his thoughts to what all he exactly needed to do down at Gerudo Town.

Get Zelda some clothes, ask Isha for suggestions for jewelry and if she had any fancy hair accessories that would flatter someone with Zelda's coloration and hair cut (and it was a good thing he'd had a mother who paid attention to this stuff that he remembered hearing about it all from enough to know what to ask), see if maybe she also sold make up- check with the clothing store first, that woman might actually sell some -then take it all to Riju and beg first for pity enough to not laugh at him, then for whatever advice she might have that he could jot down in the Slate's notes function.

A thought crossed his mind and made him frown. It was going to be very soon public that the queen and the Hylian Champion could travel around by what would look like magic to just about anyone else, and that meant that chancing using the travel gate at the Daqo Chisay shrine wasn't one he could take anymore, barring an emergency. Which meant going down to the Kay Noh shrine by the Gerudo Canyon Stable and walking.

Which pretty much guaranteed that the creep that made him feel desperately unclean was going to see him.

Link sighed while he got changed, chewing on what the hell he could do to get that guy to go away. Not only was it really becoming unsettling to be looked at like an object on display to someone who thought he could be bought and played with, if Zelda traveled into the town with him, she'd be going right past him too, and that would lead to one of two things, or potentially both- the creep would start looking at Zelda the same way, and then Link might actually have to kill him, or Zelda would lose her cool at him and potentially blow their cover. Or Link's cover, more specifically.

Neither of those options were good ones.

An idea came to him while he was tugging on the slippers that passed for shoes, and while it largely hinged on Zelda's willingness to play along, it might still work out in his favor. Those snow boots had been awfully useful, and gosh, what a wonderful gift it'd be for that little vai's girlfriend to have a matched set. The creep had been willing to give up the sand boots for a picture of some random dumb thing up in the highlands, maybe there'd be something he'd give up the snow boots for.

All it'd take at that point would be to convince Zelda to pretend to be his lesbian girlfriend and thank the guy for those boots. It'd get him to realize that not only had he been played like a fiddle, it'd hopefully make him realize that he wasn't going to get anywhere with the woman he never even bothered to ask for her name, and maybe go somewhere else.

There was the potential that while the creep would go somewhere else, he'd be taking along wet dream mental images that Link really didn't want him to have, but honestly, he already had plenty of those, may as well give him one that'll get him to go away.

Link hated that the guy would just find some other poor woman to focus his attention on at some point, and actually ugh. That was a thought he didn't want, and made him feel moderately guilty for wishing Mister Creepy would leave him alone. As long as Mister Creepy was focused on Link, he was leaving actual women alone.

Sigh. So much for that idea.

Well, he could still ask about the snow boots. May as well rob the guy blind in retaliation for those disgusting looks. He'd just have to figure out how to convince Zelda to keep her thoughts to herself when they passed him. And keep his own temper in check. Goddess knew he had experience doing that.

Hm. Now that he was thinking about it, if he was going to keep this guy's attention focused on him and not some poor woman, he was going to have to be an old-fashioned cocktease, which meant- much to his annoyance -the make-up lessons Riju was going to be giving him to pass along to Zelda might end up going to good use for himself. Might. Maybe. The discussion's tabled for now.

Although there was something he could already do to his appearance to try to play up a 'feminine' look to keep the guy focused on him, and looking at the heat waves coming off the sands made it an unhappy thing to think of. But unless Link's tastes were that outrageously different from the average guy, women looked prettier with their hair down. The head scarf and veil he had to wear would cover most of the effect of taking his hair out of its ponytail, but goddess knew it was long enough to drape slightly over his shoulders.

But it was so hot out there. Because having his head trapped under the helmet of the Goron armor hadn't caused enough sweat on the back of his neck.

Whine.

Well. He had a plan, may as well go all out with it.

Link took the top that did have a slightly different cut around the throat than what he wore- good, it'd make it slightly less obvious that he wasn't a woman standing next to Zelda than if she were wearing the exact same thing -folding it in half before turning his attention over to the sleeves, because oh wow was it a more comfortable to talk about Zelda's arm size than her bust size.

"No, she's not," he said, shaking his head. "I think she's only so much as held a sword once in her life. She prefers her books to combat. She leaves that to me."

What? It was true. That was part of his job description.

Oh thank you, Mom, for being the sort of girl into makeup. He at least knew enough about the subject to be able to firmly say that Zelda didn't qualify as 'fair'. Saula laughed. "That is one of the best ways I've heard that problem described," she said, turning to her supplies. "Fair and light skin overtones still often benefit from similar products, though. And you mentioned she had blonde hair and green- or rather, greenish -eyes, which is a very fortunate coloration to have. Most vai with that coloration combination tend to have cool undertones, but not always. Her undertones will dictate only a little less than her overtones what colors will work."

She looked at the vai, who looked a little bit intimidated by it all. "I can write this all down, if you'd like."

Link gave her a suitably bashful look for that.

He wanted to protest the gift on the basis that he had more money than he knew what to do with, and was probably starting to hoard it to the point that it was leaving general circulation to take up space in the Slate's memory, but the look on the woman's face... he couldn't tell her no. It looked like it'd damn near make her cry if he did.

"Thank you, really, thank you so much," he said, watching her pack that set up with an almost ridiculous amount of love and care. "How much for the rest?"

Saula almost started tallying everything up, but paused, frowning slightly. She'd just made the vai feel pretty and confident in her looks, and now she had to remind her about the lipstick for her friend, something she obviously couldn't wear herself.

She looked back towards the clothing for something to focus on that wasn't obviously the makeup while she thought of how to approach that one.

Well, she'd approach it the way she did the eye shadow.

"There's still one more piece of makeup we're forgetting," she said, hoping that she wasn't going to be dashing that happiness she saw on the vai's face. "Lipstick. And I think it's important you know a good shade for yourself as well. Every vai should know what looks good on her. And you can't convince me that your lips wouldn't be prettier with a smile and a splash of color, even if you do feel more comfortable with the veil. Which looks lovely, by the way."

Oh please let that work.

He slowly raised his eyebrows at her. "Unless you plan on letting me break the 'no men' policy, I'd have to be dressed like this, and like I told Zelda, I would be fine going with the 'she has a special guard for when she visits the Gerudo Chief' line, but that'd mean we'd have to put that special guard around her elsewhere, or else it'd be way too easy to guess at who that otherwise-never-seen woman was. Especially since she shouldn't have reason to have to hide behind a veil. And would also be in Hylian dress, not Gerudo."
