So. About them errands, huh?
((Man. How about all that self-play. It's what I get for playing 90% of the characters, I guess. :p And also currently the only character who can fling himself around the kingdom in seconds, so the job of errand boy has fallen to him. Purah's really got to come up with something for Zelda.))

After contacting Zelda and ending up with a laundry list of things he needed to get, as well as a brief panic when she asked about the sign outside his house, of all things, Link shifted his focus to his new agenda: getting a bunch of girly stuff.

His life went awry somewhere along the line, and he wasn't quite sure where. As much as he missed his sister, part of him was glad his early teen years weren't plagued by a teenage girl potentially trying to cajole him into being her practice dummy for learning how to apply makeup and do fancy hair styles. There was a good chance Marin would've ended up more like their grandmother than their mother on that front, but even so, that was an arrow he'd dodged.

It wasn't even getting dressed up like a woman that would've bothered him- when he was growing up, women were the ones with the power, it wasn't exactly an insult to look like one, and he had to do that later to get into Gerudo Town anyway -it was the idea of being turned into what amounted to a science experiment that would've annoyed him. Being told to sit and stay and be subjected to whatever his handlers wanted to do would've driven him crazy.

That, and he remembered being an adolescent boy, and he knew how adolescent girls acted, and he and his sister probably would've driven each other up the wall and down each other's throats.

... he still missed her, though.

He forcibly shoved that subject aside and focused back on the task at hand, most of which was just taking pictures, but the first thing he had to do was something that he wasn't ... exactly looking forward to. For a myriad of reasons, not the least of which was 'fessing up to having not told the entire truth to Zumi and Yammo earlier about his relationship status with Zelda. Although before he could do that, he had to 'fess up to himself about it. His side of things wasn't anything he'd been... too untruthful about- there was nothing that he'd given any thought to (and fighting his brain to keep it that way was sometimes a challenge) -but he knew damn well what Zelda's side was. Sure, there honestly was the chance that the years had changed her, but he had a feeling in his gut that they hadn't. He'd probably hide behind that possibility for awhile yet, but it was something he was going to have to face at some point.

Sometimes he wished he'd worked harder at not avoiding dealing with emotions after his initial grief over Marin had passed. It'd make things a lot easier on him. His tendency to shut down had helped him save face when the kingdom's spotlight was on him, but now it was just making things messy.

Oh, hey, brain. Nice of you to drift back to that subject. Let's stay on task, hmm?

The women had made pretty good time, all things considered, as Link could see them just on the other side of Proxim Bridge as he approached it. He nodded in greeting to Brigo, who still was holding his position as guard, though what he was guarding and why, Link wasn't sure. Whatever made him happy and gave him purpose, Link supposed.

Link didn't answer at first, his eyebrows the first part of his face to answer, raising in uncertainty at what was being said, followed by the rest of his face, looking up at Sidon in confusion.

Did he need a moment? There wasn't enough time left in existence for him to work through every moment and flash of clarity of a time long dead and past, full of people he once knew, loved, cherished. And interspersed with a helping of memories that weren't even his to confuse the issue. Two lifetimes and part of another.

But none of that was anything he was ready or willing to air, so he shook his head. "No, I'm good." On up the stairs now, mmhmmyup.

Sidon hung back a moment, watching his friend's retreating back, wondering what it was that Link had been seeing, because it wasn't the here and now. Whatever it was, it was deeply upsetting, and Sidon couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to it than whatever grief Link associated to the home of his departed friend.

But whatever it was, Link wasn't telling, and Sidon knew that the only way he'd ever get Link to say was to be patient and wait. Link trusted him with information that few- if any -knew beyond him, Sidon knew that if he waited, Link's trust would extend to saying whatever had been on his mind.

So he hurried to catch up to Link, calling up to his father as they got close enough to catch the king's attention. "We have a visitor, Father," he said.

Dorephan had seen Sidon before his son had even spoken, but he certainly hadn't seen Link. Relief washed over him to see the young Hylian showing up sooner than Dorephan had expected. "A most welcome visitor!" he said, leaning forward. Muzu stepped to the side as Link and Sidon approached the throne.

"It is good to see you," Dorephan said. "I notice that the queen is not with you, however. Has something happened?"

This was getting tiring, constantly not knowing when to expect her.

Link shook his head. "No, nothing cataclysmic, anyway," he said. Then gave him an ornery grin. "We'll warn you if the kingdom's about to explode again."

At the weary look that earned him, he shrugged. "No, nothing bad. I just had to clear the roads between Hateno and Akkala before we could do anything. The house we're staying in was fine when it was just me, but it's not made for two people, and Zelda really should have a place she can go home to and sleep without having to try to share a place that has no privacy with someone else. That'd only cause unnecessary stress and make it hard to conduct business. There's a guy from Hateno who does construction work, but he was in Tarrey Town for a wedding. I decided to clear the way for him so he can get back safely. He'll be there some time tonight, then we were going to argue with him all morning about how to fix the housing situation, then we'll be here in the afternoon."

You'd never know that not thirty seconds ago, this guy was so lost in yesteryear that no map was big enough to navigate him home. It just looked like Business As Usual here.

"An argument that I am sure you will win, my friend!" Dorephan said with a laugh. "I'm afraid I did overlook the fact that the queen would need a home to call her own before she could begin such important work. Please extend my apologies to her for making her feel rushed if she has so."

Link shook his head. "No, you haven't been. It's been our own guilt that's been doing that," he said. "I feel bad that we keep having to blow you off. But we'll be here tomorrow. I don't know how long she'll stay, but I think I'm going to be here all afternoon."

He nodded his head back towards where Ruta was perched. "I'll be climbing up to Ruta to take a look at her. I can promise you though, she's not going anywhere in the meantime. She's completely offline. At this point, only three things will get her moving again-"

He held up one finger. "One, a new pilot that she responds to, and don't ask me what the requirements are for that, I wasn't part of that planning." Second finger. "Two, the Slate, which means me." Third finger. "Ganon or Goddess knows what other higher cosmic force deciding to rock the planet on its axis for no discernible reason. I can promise Ganon's not an issue, and Acts of Hylia are beyond my ability to predict."

"'Acts of Hylia,' as you put it, are beyond anyone's ability to predict, I believe," Dorephan said. "You are the last of the Champions, if anyone's word can be trusted regarding the behavior of the Divine Beast, it is yours. We will rest easy tonight."

He ducked his head a bit to look out towards Ruta. "That is quite the climb though, my friend," he said. "How do you intend on making that safely?"

Link looked back to Ruta, a look on his face that really didn't do the weariness he felt at the prospect justice. "I can make it," he said. "It's not easy, but the right elixir, and I'll make it. And I might get lucky and be able to use another way to cut down some climbing time. Revali gave me that updraft of his, may as well see how far up it'll take me before I have to start going the hard way."

Dorephan looked first at his senior advisor, then at his son, wondering if either of them knew what this updraft was. Seeing the same lack of knowing on their faces, he took it upon himself to ask. "What updraft is this you speak of? Was Champion Revali's spirit lingering as well?"

Link looked back at him, blinking blankly until it hit him that it actually wasn't something Dorephan would know, that the Champions had shared their powers with him. Honestly, the only people who he did much talking to about anything related to his mission- anything serious, anyway -were Impa and the other Sheikah lords, and now Zelda, and they all knew.

Hm. Well. Okay.

"They were," he said with a small nod. "Ganon had trapped all of them in their Beasts. Revali had a spell of some sort that summoned an updraft at will, and he begrudgingly admitted that I was a 'worthy warrior'-" you could hear those air quotes "-and that meant he could hand it over. I think he just didn't want it to get lost to history. He worked hard on that."

Something clicked in Sidon's brain at that. "The other Champions, they had powers of their own as well, did they not?" he asked. "I seem to recall that Champion Urbosa had control of lightning and Champion Daruk had a sort of protection field. Did they share their powers as well? I cannot be convinced that my sister did not share her healing with you."

That explained why he'd heard an echo of his sister's voice at the time that Link would have arrived. His sister had left a piece of herself behind in the young Hylian.

Link couldn't help but feel a little awkward at being called out on that. He walked into it, and he knew it, and if anyone deserved to be told, it was Mipha's own brother and father, but it was a bit uncomfortable to tell her surviving family that he had been given something that was hers and not them.

"I wouldn't try, I'd be lying if I did," Link said, shifting on his feet slightly. "It's saved me from the fire a few times, so it's been put to good use. But you're right, Daruk and Urbosa had powers too, and they gave those to me, too. They've been a big help."

Dorephan could see that Link was ill at ease with what sounded like a confession of a crime, though what crime Link thought he had committed, Dorephan wasn't sure. "And thus, the legacies of all the Champions live on," he said with a nod. "My daughter's spirit must rest well, knowing that she can continue to help you, long after the fight with Ganon is over. I can think of no one more worthy of her magic."

Then he held out his arms. "But come, our friends and family would not want us to linger on the past when the future awaits. We eagerly await your visit tomorrow. You said in the afternoon? Have you any idea yet what part of the afternoon?"

Link was mentally cursing Dorephan for making a big deal out of it. I can think of someone, he thought to himself. Like her own damn brother.

Maybe he'd figure out how to pass that along, or duplicate it, or something.

Later.

Dorephan had redeemed himself by diverting the subject. "Probably mid-to-late," Link said. "I know the guy who's going to be working on the house, he's going to be tough to argue with if he decides what we want isn't good enough. I'm probably going to have to hope either Zelda or I can charm him into doing what we want."

"I have utmost faith in both you and the queen," Dorephan said with a laugh. "I recall her being quite charming as a young princess, I can only imagine that the years have given her a steadfastness that surpasses even the most stubborn of men."

He resisted the urge to laugh at the long-suffering look that put on Link's face. He had a feeling that the queen had already displayed that steadfastness, and had done so at his friend's annoyance.

"But I hope the years have not banished her appetite. If you are to be here long enough to board Ruta and bring her to life and firmly under our control, or to decide that she is dormant until she is needed and that cannot be changed, then you will likely be here late enough for us to offer an early supper."

You said the magic word, Dorephan. Anything to do with free food was a happy one for Link, as long as it wasn't bad food. And he knew the Zora royals never offered bad food.

Yum. :9

"We'll take you up on that," Link said. "I remember the food here, and I've missed it."

"Food was a side bonus," Link said with a grin. "A good side bonus, but not my main reason for coming."

Then he cracked his knuckles and laced his fingers behind his neck. "Though I know this isn't going to fill anyone with glee, but we don't want Ruta to remain offline until the next time Ganon shows his ugly face."

He shook his head, already seeing the unhappy look that put on Muzu's face. "We take too much chance of the past repeating itself if we don't keep on top of controlling the Beasts and knowing how to use them in a way that he can't override. Which means we'll be training new pilots. If we don't, Ganon could do even more damage to a future generation than he did to us. We don't need to lose more Champions."

Dorephan wasn't any happier about the prospect of putting another Zora behind the controls of the Divine Beast, but he understood the situation from a hundred years ago better than Muzu did- Muzu had been too busy disliking the Hylians and their Sheikah shadows to fully absorb the gravity of the looming prophecy.

And though Muzu was a clever politician under that surly grumpiness, he did not understand the bond the Zora royal family held with the Hyrulean royal family. That bond went back so many thousands of years that nobody remembered when it was formed. It was known, but only the royals themselves fully understood it. The Zora royal family would answer the Hyrulean cry for help every time Ganon appeared, no matter the losses. If the Zoras took heavy losses, it was a guarantee that the Hyruleans were taking even heavier losses.

"I fully agree," he said. "All of the land stands threatened by Ganon, and has since time immemorial. The Zora royal family has ever stood as a friend and ally of the Hyrulean royal family in the struggle to survive the onslaught of that ancient evil, and we will continue to do so. Once Ruta has been reactivated and her controls put back in our hands, we will do our part to make sure that knowledge of how she works never fades from our memory."

Muzu ... knew, in a manner of speaking, though not to the extent that his king clearly did. But even though the princess's spirit had been freed and given peace, the loss still ached. And that ache made him lodge a protest, even if only a token one.

"Your Majesty, surely there is a better way to protect against the Calamity than to trust the Divine Beasts."
