So. About them errands, huh?
((Man. How about all that self-play. It's what I get for playing 90% of the characters, I guess. :p And also currently the only character who can fling himself around the kingdom in seconds, so the job of errand boy has fallen to him. Purah's really got to come up with something for Zelda.))

After contacting Zelda and ending up with a laundry list of things he needed to get, as well as a brief panic when she asked about the sign outside his house, of all things, Link shifted his focus to his new agenda: getting a bunch of girly stuff.

His life went awry somewhere along the line, and he wasn't quite sure where. As much as he missed his sister, part of him was glad his early teen years weren't plagued by a teenage girl potentially trying to cajole him into being her practice dummy for learning how to apply makeup and do fancy hair styles. There was a good chance Marin would've ended up more like their grandmother than their mother on that front, but even so, that was an arrow he'd dodged.

It wasn't even getting dressed up like a woman that would've bothered him- when he was growing up, women were the ones with the power, it wasn't exactly an insult to look like one, and he had to do that later to get into Gerudo Town anyway -it was the idea of being turned into what amounted to a science experiment that would've annoyed him. Being told to sit and stay and be subjected to whatever his handlers wanted to do would've driven him crazy.

That, and he remembered being an adolescent boy, and he knew how adolescent girls acted, and he and his sister probably would've driven each other up the wall and down each other's throats.

... he still missed her, though.

He forcibly shoved that subject aside and focused back on the task at hand, most of which was just taking pictures, but the first thing he had to do was something that he wasn't ... exactly looking forward to. For a myriad of reasons, not the least of which was 'fessing up to having not told the entire truth to Zumi and Yammo earlier about his relationship status with Zelda. Although before he could do that, he had to 'fess up to himself about it. His side of things wasn't anything he'd been... too untruthful about- there was nothing that he'd given any thought to (and fighting his brain to keep it that way was sometimes a challenge) -but he knew damn well what Zelda's side was. Sure, there honestly was the chance that the years had changed her, but he had a feeling in his gut that they hadn't. He'd probably hide behind that possibility for awhile yet, but it was something he was going to have to face at some point.

Sometimes he wished he'd worked harder at not avoiding dealing with emotions after his initial grief over Marin had passed. It'd make things a lot easier on him. His tendency to shut down had helped him save face when the kingdom's spotlight was on him, but now it was just making things messy.

Oh, hey, brain. Nice of you to drift back to that subject. Let's stay on task, hmm?

The women had made pretty good time, all things considered, as Link could see them just on the other side of Proxim Bridge as he approached it. He nodded in greeting to Brigo, who still was holding his position as guard, though what he was guarding and why, Link wasn't sure. Whatever made him happy and gave him purpose, Link supposed.

Yammo barely knew Link, she didn't know all the history involved with him and the queen, or even with him and Zumi. But she knew enough to have a concern that made her frown. "But you were willing to chance one showing up in the first place."

He was losing major points in her mind.

Another grimace, this time a wounded one. "Not knowingly," he said. "One of the drawbacks of the Shrine of Resurrection is that it wiped my memories. I didn't even know my own name when I woke up. I didn't exactly remember that little detail when Zumi approached me."

He looked at Zumi directly at that point. "And I didn't need to remember any of it to know that there was no chance she'd been a Someone Else, before you worry. She was royalty, and I was from the common man. It wouldn't have mattered what we wanted, it never would've been allowed to happen."

Zumi would deal with wondering what it must've been like, to wake up with no idea who he even was, at a later time. She felt bad for him, but that wasn't the most important part of that explanation.

"That does make me feel better," she said, then shook her head with a little laugh. "But now you remember, and you're not willing to hurt her like that." She gave him an affectionate smile. "You realize that it's my turn to say you sound like someone in love."

He frowned, not wanting to even go down that road. "You don't have to be in love with someone to love them," he protested.

"I know," Zumi said. "But you sound like it just the same. But you said there wasn't anything on you end, so I'm going to take that to mean that you've just got a bigger heart than you let on behind that neverending snark."

She raised her eyebrows slightly. "But it sounds like the answer to being in the child's life as a parent is a no either way it goes. And I understand." She paused. "But Link?"

He gave her a tired look out of the corner of his eye. "I'm dreading where that tone is going," he said, giving a half-hearted attempt at deterring her from saying whatever it was she wanted to say.

"Deal with it," Zumi said. "But you know that if you always worry about how what goes on in your personal life affects her, you'll never have a personal life, right?" She shook her head. "I'm not trying to arm wrestle you into giving me a different answer, I'm just... concerned. As your friend. I don't want to see you missing out on something because of someone else's feelings that you don't even return."

Link sighed, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand, before lifting the other to lace his fingers against his neck. "I know. And it's something I'll just deal with. She's worth it. I've lost too many important people to me to knowingly do something that'd hurt one of the last ones I have left that much."

Zumi slowed her walk to a stop, looking at him. When both her partner and Link stopped and looked back at her, she gave him a sad smile. "You know, every time you open your mouth, I feel better about my choice. My kid's got a good shot at inheriting their donor's kind heart."

Then she grabbed him in a hug. "If it has to come up at all, you were a donor, nothing more," she assured him. "And tell the queen I'll be happy to help her however I can, as long as she knows that I'm still learning the fancy stuff myself, so we'll have to learn together."

Yammo thought they were both dummies, though in the best possible way. She'd been ambivalent about Link's involvement in their child's life; she had no problem with him being there, and Zumi had wanted it, so she was happy to go along. Link seemed like a good man, and unlike many men out there, had cared enough to come looking for them to see if he was needed. That put him a number of notches above anyone she could've found herself at a later time.

And the fact that he was shutting the door on any semblence of a personal life for the sake of a woman who clearly meant the world to him told her that she and Zumi didn't have to worry about him changing his mind later and trying to force himself in where he wasn't wanted, which added a few more notches between him and those other potentials out there.

It definitely earned him those points he'd been losing back, that was for sure. Especially with the unnerving explanation of his memory problem. That must've been terrifying to go through. Maybe she'd ask him about it once they were settled in at Hateno and he had time. She didn't know what all duties he had to the queen, now that she was back and the job of Defeat Ganon was done. But it was certainly a story she'd like to hear, and she'd bet a couple hundred rupees that Zumi did too. And if Zumi were going to be part of the queen's life the way Link was asking her to, the queen's side of the story was probably one they were going to be getting, too.

But with Link's obvious discomfort with the subject of why he was saying no, and Zumi's attention on his request, it was falling to Yammo to bring up a few issues.

"I hate to be the practical party pooper," she said, "but we should probably get our stories straight." She nodded at Zumi, who let go of Link enough to turn to include Yammo in the conversation. "She just said donor, but is that actually an acceptable alternative? Or should we just lie wholesale? It's going to look a little strange either way we do it. The timing makes donor a bit of a stretch, but I'm not sure how else to explain why you came looking for us to tell us about Hateno in the first place."

Link hadn't worked out the particulars on that, and he probably should've, in retrospect. There were a lot of things he should've done in retrospect, actually.

He looked at Zumi, dropping his hand from her back to cross his arms, thinking. "She thinks I was out monster hunting the other night, I could feasibly say that I just happened to run into you two." He frowned. "If it absolutely has to come up for some reason, though, donor should fly. There were same sex couples in the peerage, they had to go about things the same way as everyone else. That was about the only exception to their dumb rules about extra-marital sex and children conceived by it."

Link shook his head. "No, 'about' as in that's the only exception I ever found out about. It's an exception, I just don't know for certain about any others. I was stuck on center stage around them. I learned just enough to know how to keep from attracting negative attention, and kept out of the rest. They were too nuts for my tastes."

"Can't say that I blame you," Yammo said, mulling that over. "Okay, sounds like we'd be best off just going with you happened to run into us when you were out the other night. You and Zumi knew each other from you taking a break at Serenne." She shrugged. "Nothing on that front has to be changed except the physical part. But it meant you were invested enough to sit and talk for a few minutes, and found out what was going on, and offered to help how you could. That doesn't strike me as out of character for you."

There were times Link wished it would've been out of character, because sometimes sticking his nose into something to offer help got him into trouble. But the alternative to that trouble left a sour feeling in his stomach.

"Nosy and meddlesome," he said with a deprecating grin. "Pretty much the story of my life, right there. Sounds like we've got a plan. I'll swing through tomorrow morning and clean up the road between the stable and Hateno. Zelda gave me a laundry list of things she needs me to do this afternoon, so I'm pretty sure I won't have time to get to that today."

"Yes I do," Yammo said. "From listening to Zumi, you sound like you need to be given shit more often."

She held out her hand for Zumi, ignoring the indignant noise Link gave her at that. "But if you've got that long of a laundry list to get to, you'd better get to that. We'll see you some time tomorrow."

"Just means you've got good taste," Yammo said. Then added in a softer tone, "hey." When Link looked back up at her, she smiled. "Thank you. For everything. I know we've barely met, but you've already done more for me than anyone has before."

Link looked at her blankly for a moment, then at Zumi when she wrapped her free arm around Yammo's and rested her head on her partner's shoulder pointedly, then shook his head with a smile. "As long as I don't have to sleep with anyone else to do it, I'm happy to do what I can."

He waved once. "I gotta get going."

After the women had a chance to say goodbye, he selected the Akh Va'quot shrine's travel gate and clicked 'travel.'
