So. About them errands, huh?
((Man. How about all that self-play. It's what I get for playing 90% of the characters, I guess. :p And also currently the only character who can fling himself around the kingdom in seconds, so the job of errand boy has fallen to him. Purah's really got to come up with something for Zelda.))

After contacting Zelda and ending up with a laundry list of things he needed to get, as well as a brief panic when she asked about the sign outside his house, of all things, Link shifted his focus to his new agenda: getting a bunch of girly stuff.

His life went awry somewhere along the line, and he wasn't quite sure where. As much as he missed his sister, part of him was glad his early teen years weren't plagued by a teenage girl potentially trying to cajole him into being her practice dummy for learning how to apply makeup and do fancy hair styles. There was a good chance Marin would've ended up more like their grandmother than their mother on that front, but even so, that was an arrow he'd dodged.

It wasn't even getting dressed up like a woman that would've bothered him- when he was growing up, women were the ones with the power, it wasn't exactly an insult to look like one, and he had to do that later to get into Gerudo Town anyway -it was the idea of being turned into what amounted to a science experiment that would've annoyed him. Being told to sit and stay and be subjected to whatever his handlers wanted to do would've driven him crazy.

That, and he remembered being an adolescent boy, and he knew how adolescent girls acted, and he and his sister probably would've driven each other up the wall and down each other's throats.

... he still missed her, though.

He forcibly shoved that subject aside and focused back on the task at hand, most of which was just taking pictures, but the first thing he had to do was something that he wasn't ... exactly looking forward to. For a myriad of reasons, not the least of which was 'fessing up to having not told the entire truth to Zumi and Yammo earlier about his relationship status with Zelda. Although before he could do that, he had to 'fess up to himself about it. His side of things wasn't anything he'd been... too untruthful about- there was nothing that he'd given any thought to (and fighting his brain to keep it that way was sometimes a challenge) -but he knew damn well what Zelda's side was. Sure, there honestly was the chance that the years had changed her, but he had a feeling in his gut that they hadn't. He'd probably hide behind that possibility for awhile yet, but it was something he was going to have to face at some point.

Sometimes he wished he'd worked harder at not avoiding dealing with emotions after his initial grief over Marin had passed. It'd make things a lot easier on him. His tendency to shut down had helped him save face when the kingdom's spotlight was on him, but now it was just making things messy.

Oh, hey, brain. Nice of you to drift back to that subject. Let's stay on task, hmm?

The women had made pretty good time, all things considered, as Link could see them just on the other side of Proxim Bridge as he approached it. He nodded in greeting to Brigo, who still was holding his position as guard, though what he was guarding and why, Link wasn't sure. Whatever made him happy and gave him purpose, Link supposed.

He slowly raised his eyebrows at her. "Unless you plan on letting me break the 'no men' policy, I'd have to be dressed like this, and like I told Zelda, I would be fine going with the 'she has a special guard for when she visits the Gerudo Chief' line, but that'd mean we'd have to put that special guard around her elsewhere, or else it'd be way too easy to guess at who that otherwise-never-seen woman was. Especially since she shouldn't have reason to have to hide behind a veil. And would also be in Hylian dress, not Gerudo."

"Oh." She looked at Buliara thoughtfully. "This might require some heavy consideration, making an exception for you, I mean. Not that I'd reveal you were the vai coming in, but your work for everyone and I can easily enough reveal you were the one who tamed Divine Beast Vah Naboris, and with this being a dangerous land, it might be prudent to allow the last living Royal Guard to accompany the Queen of Hyrule?" She shrugged. "Just a thought. I know it breaks tradition and rules, but it's a dangerous land here, and Link knows it better than Zelda. We could provide our own squad of guards to Zelda, but Lady Urbosa knew and trusted Link. That says a great deal to me, even if she didn't let him in the City at the time. What do you think, Buliara?"

Buliara had wondered if that was going to be given even a passing thought the second the voe mentioned that he wouldn't be allowed in as the captain of the guard. Her immediate first instinct was to disagree with the whole idea. Men had never been allowed in the city, and back when the other races were all still in communication via the Hyrulean royal family, that policy had remained and been honored by the royal family. Even Lady Urbosa forced them to respect it, though from her diary's writings, she'd let the young Hylian Champion sneak in.

But, there was that fact, along with the point her chief made- this voe was the last of the royal guard for the Hyrulean royal family. It wasn't like back then, when there were women in the guard who could come in with the royal daughters. The new queen had precisely one guard to her name.

Diplomacy demanded the exception. Tradition demanded the opposite.

"We would have to keep it silent that he had any hand with the retrieval of the Thunder Helm," she said, stalling a tiny bit. "That is known to have been associated to a Hylian vai."

More hesitation, then she frowned slightly. "I believe it would be best discussed with the rest of our own guard, but... this is an unusual case. If there was any case in the history of our city that could merit the discussion, it is this one."

She glanced at her chief. "I feel it wise, however, to limit that exception to official visits only."

Riju nodded. "Of course. This isn't something to take lightly. It must be kept restricted to official court functions, and input from the higher ranks of our own guards is going to be required, as they cannot feel they are being replaced by a voe."

She looked at Link. "What are your thoughts and feelings on this matter?"

Good question. Link hadn't thought about the possibility at all, had just assumed that since even Urbosa hadn't allowed him to break the rule, letting it blatantly be broken wasn't going to even be a consideration.

He clipped the Slate back on his hip to buy him a second to think, then started rubbing the back of his neck. "I'd definitely prefer it here than out somewhere in the desert," he said. "Even though the Blood Moon's not going to happen anymore, there's still monsters out there, and I'd rather be able to get bored listening to politics than have to tune everything out completely to keep an eye out."

Then he frowned, nothing more than a slight marring of his brow. "And quite honestly, it's cooler here in town than anywhere else. If we met outside somewhere, I'd be needing something I could wear that wouldn't be completely inappropriate for an official meeting between the queen of Hyrule and the Gerudo cheif. If I can get away with it, I'd rather just wear my old uniform and not need something special made."

That made his frown deepen. "Come to think of it, the Gorons are going to need the same thing. Especially if I'll be having to go up to the crater to get at Rudania." That sounded like fun.

"Although speaking of the Beasts, has anything unusual been going on with Naboris after the attack on the castle? I already know she's offline, but that's just right now. She didn't do anything right after that, did she?"

"On the contrary, it hasn't done anything at all but shut down completely."

Riju paused. "You do understand that for non-official court business, you will not be permitted passage into the city? For those circumstances, Buliara will put together a squad of her best guards under her command to see to Zelda's safety while she's within our walls. If it comes down to it, I will use the Thunder Helm itself to keep her safe."

Link snorted. "Non-official business, she's coming in with a veil over her face just the same way I do. That's pretty much the only reason I ended up with that makeup lesson from someone other than you. The woman who ran the clothing store had makeup for sale, and apparently is a connoisseur of all things pretty-making."

He knew Riju couldn't see the smile, but he hoped the rest of his face showed it. "I appreciate you offering with the Thunder Helm. If for some Goddess only knows reason I'm stuck somewhere else while she's here, I know she'll be fine."

Riju smiled. "I won't let anything happen to royals in my territory. It's bad for business and reputation. Plus, she's like the only vai even remotely close to my age who's ruling. I need a friend."

Link stifled the urge to laugh too loudly- even well out of hearing range of anyone other than Riju and Buliara, a loud laugh that obviously belonged to a man would bring the entire guard running in.

"That is almost exactly what she said," he said. "You two are the only ruling women. Elder Kaneli's male, Dorephan's still on the throne and-" He cut himself off just briefly, biting back hurt, "-he only has a son to inherit it. And the Gorons are all male." He shrugged before she could ask the inevitable, "I don't know how their reproduction works, I'm not going to ask, and we'd probably all be happier if nobody did.

"But she's only five years older than you, if you ignore the calendar, so that 'remotely close' isn't all that far," he continued, directing the conversation away from a subject that could potentially cause madness. "You're still more her peer than she is with most people around us. Hateno's only got a couple women who are in her age range."

"I was hoping you had any idea about Goron vai. So they're all voe? And you have no idea how that's possible? I'm torn between wanting to know and being afraid of finding out."

She shook her head. "Bring her to me when you can, so I can meet her. Is there anything else I can help you with that she needs?"

"Stick with the 'be afraid,'" Link suggested with way too amusement. "It could just be that they all identify as male, without caring about reproductive parts, or they could just spawn from those rocks on their backs. I prefer to be afraid to find out and not ask."

His other hand joined the first on the back of his neck as he looked up at the ceiling, thinking. "As far as when I can bring her here, assuming that Bolson can work his magic on the house the way Zelda wants, we'll be spending most of our time out from underfoot, and if we hadn't promised Dorephan already, I'd half accuse her of wanting to come here tomorrow. She was close with your family, and like it was pointed out, you two are the only female rulers. She's itching for friends, and I can't say that I blame her."

Frown. Think think think. Frown. "If Urbosa hadn't parked Naboris in such a damn inaccessible place, I'd ask if you could send someone to go look at her, at least look at her external condition. Zelda loves that old technology, if you had information on that, she'd sit and listen and pepper you with questions over it for hours."

He dropped his hands and looked at her. "If you happen to see anything Urbosa left behind about how Naboris responded to her, she'd love it if you gave her that with a bow on it."

"So go see Dorephan first, then come here to see me. I can send a troupe of vai up to investigate Naboris in the meantime. It's not that inaccessible, I don't think. We're capable of climbing, and we have gear and trained vai soldiers. It should be easier now that Naboris is calm. We can at least make the attempt. In the meantime, I'll look around again for anything of Lady Urbosa's regarding Naboris."

Link rubbed the back of his head, a bit embarrassed. "I hadn't meant that your women weren't up for it," he said. "It's just a helluva climb, and I'm not used to there being other trained soldiers who can do that around to rely on. The knights didn't have a lot of reason to learn to be part mountain goat."

At least he had a good sense of humor about it.

"I'll have her here with bells on, if she doesn't beat me to it," Link said. "I'll probably let you two do the Girl Talk Thing that bores me to tears and head up to Naboris, see if I can get her back online. I'll be doing that for Ruta tomorrow, and probably the other two later." He nodded at Buliara. "I'll leave them in your capable hands."

Buliara could tell by the voe's tone that he was trusting her with the most important person to him in the world, and given that he was a guard himself, and one so respected by Lady Urbosa that even she let him sneak into the city- told him how to outright -so he could stay with the then-princess, she knew that he wouldn't leave her protection to someone else without very good reason.

"The queen will be safe," she promised him, knowing that he was doing her an honor with that trust.

Buliara's tone told Link that he'd made the right call with his judgement of her, recognized the tone of a fellow guard of someone important enough to die for, and she almost would've cheapened that promise by adding something to the effect of swearing on her honor.

He nodded once, then looked at Riju. "I hate to just stop by and run, but I left Zelda alone in Hateno, and I'm not going to force her to rely on the favor of a bunch of strangers for all of her meals her first day out and about as queen. I wanted to at least get the Thunder Helm back to you, though. Thanks for letting me borrow that, by the way. There were a couple of shrines that had unnatural lightning as an environmental challenge for getting in, and I couldn't see any other safe way of getting into them."

That, and he wanted to scrub that makeup off. The eye shadow was starting to feel weird.

Link almost just waved goodbye and left, the Slate already in one hand, then he paused and squinted at her. It struck him just how much she looked like Urbosa.

"Mind if I get your picture before I go?" he asked. He grinned, though she couldn't see that. "She had me taking pictures of all the other towns, and this town has a prettier leader than the other tribes do."

Link had to resist the urge to laugh again- twelve-year-olds made the best expressions sometimes.

He held up the Slate. "Like a portrait, a painting. The Slate creates true-to-life pictures and stores it inside it, like I just did those shopping bags."

Link outright choked on laughter, unable to do anything else to squash it before he was heard.

"You women are amazing," he said, still struggling to not laugh and shaking his head. "You look good." He turned on the camera and held the Slate up. "I'd quote Purah and say 'snap,' but Purah's a weird one that can only truly be experienced in person, and not by proxy."

Aaaaand snap.

He turned the Slate back around and checked the album view, making sure that the camera hadn't slipped out of focus and taken a fuzzy picture (it'd done that a time or two), then stepped closer to show the picture to her. "We have a picture back at the house of us five Champions and Zelda together, I'll put it into the Slate's memory and bring it with us so you can see a picture of Urbosa. You look a lot like her."

Link smiled, and this time, he really wished she could see it. It was one of his rare heartfelt ones, not the personable, 'keep everyone 10 feet away' ones that most people got.

"Especially since nobody alive knows what she looked like to be honest about that," he said, turning the Slate back around and stepping back- he knew that Buliara wasn't comfortable enough with him yet to like him being too close to Riju more than necessary. "If I'd had enough memories that she was in when I met you, I might've said something earlier. Because you look like she would've at your age."

Which is why he'd wanted that picture. In some ways, Zelda was a nigh-stranger to him, with the way his memory loss had 'reset' his life, but in even more ways, he knew her better than he'd known most people in his life. And the Him That Knew Her had a funny feeling that either a part of her mind was replacing Urbosa with Riju- not purposely, but he knew it'd be easy to do by accident -or she was trying so hard to do the opposite that seeing someone that similar to her oldest friend whom she'd never see again would be a potentially unwelcome shock.

Either way, it'd be a 'better safe than sorry' idea to get that picture for Zelda, to brace her if she needed it.
