So. About them errands, huh?
((Man. How about all that self-play. It's what I get for playing 90% of the characters, I guess. :p And also currently the only character who can fling himself around the kingdom in seconds, so the job of errand boy has fallen to him. Purah's really got to come up with something for Zelda.))

After contacting Zelda and ending up with a laundry list of things he needed to get, as well as a brief panic when she asked about the sign outside his house, of all things, Link shifted his focus to his new agenda: getting a bunch of girly stuff.

His life went awry somewhere along the line, and he wasn't quite sure where. As much as he missed his sister, part of him was glad his early teen years weren't plagued by a teenage girl potentially trying to cajole him into being her practice dummy for learning how to apply makeup and do fancy hair styles. There was a good chance Marin would've ended up more like their grandmother than their mother on that front, but even so, that was an arrow he'd dodged.

It wasn't even getting dressed up like a woman that would've bothered him- when he was growing up, women were the ones with the power, it wasn't exactly an insult to look like one, and he had to do that later to get into Gerudo Town anyway -it was the idea of being turned into what amounted to a science experiment that would've annoyed him. Being told to sit and stay and be subjected to whatever his handlers wanted to do would've driven him crazy.

That, and he remembered being an adolescent boy, and he knew how adolescent girls acted, and he and his sister probably would've driven each other up the wall and down each other's throats.

... he still missed her, though.

He forcibly shoved that subject aside and focused back on the task at hand, most of which was just taking pictures, but the first thing he had to do was something that he wasn't ... exactly looking forward to. For a myriad of reasons, not the least of which was 'fessing up to having not told the entire truth to Zumi and Yammo earlier about his relationship status with Zelda. Although before he could do that, he had to 'fess up to himself about it. His side of things wasn't anything he'd been... too untruthful about- there was nothing that he'd given any thought to (and fighting his brain to keep it that way was sometimes a challenge) -but he knew damn well what Zelda's side was. Sure, there honestly was the chance that the years had changed her, but he had a feeling in his gut that they hadn't. He'd probably hide behind that possibility for awhile yet, but it was something he was going to have to face at some point.

Sometimes he wished he'd worked harder at not avoiding dealing with emotions after his initial grief over Marin had passed. It'd make things a lot easier on him. His tendency to shut down had helped him save face when the kingdom's spotlight was on him, but now it was just making things messy.

Oh, hey, brain. Nice of you to drift back to that subject. Let's stay on task, hmm?

The women had made pretty good time, all things considered, as Link could see them just on the other side of Proxim Bridge as he approached it. He nodded in greeting to Brigo, who still was holding his position as guard, though what he was guarding and why, Link wasn't sure. Whatever made him happy and gave him purpose, Link supposed.

Oh thank you, Mom, for being the sort of girl into makeup. He at least knew enough about the subject to be able to firmly say that Zelda didn't qualify as 'fair'. "She's not quite that light-skinned, no. She doesn't turn into a radish if she's outside in the sun longer than fifteen minutes, anyway."

Saula laughed. "That is one of the best ways I've heard that problem described," she said, turning to her supplies. "Fair and light skin overtones still often benefit from similar products, though. And you mentioned she had blonde hair and green- or rather, greenish -eyes, which is a very fortunate coloration to have. Most vai with that coloration combination tend to have cool undertones, but not always. Her undertones will dictate only a little less than her overtones what colors will work."

She looked at the vai, who looked a little bit intimidated by it all. "I can write this all down, if you'd like."

"Please?" he asked. "I have a decent memory, but you haven't even gone into blushes yet, I may be asking a bit much of it."

That, and he just didn't want to be rattling this off to Zelda himself, unless he absolutely had to. He had a feeling his opinion may be enlisted as it was.

Saula smiled in understanding. "It can be a bit intimidating when you first start off," she agreed, stepping behind the counter to fetch some paper. "Now, this one is perhaps a bit more difficult to answer if you've never paid attention, but have you seen her wearing whites or creams, by any chance?"

"I've seen her wearing clothes with white," he said, raising an eyebrow and wondering where that one was going. He hadn't paid that much attention to his mother and her friends discussing the subject.

"Good," Saula said, picking out a couple peach blushes. "Does it make her look washed out, or does it flatter her?"

Well, at least he could answer the washed out part of that question. That dress she wore at the Springs was the first thing that came to mind when he was asked about white, and he had ... negative associations there. Put it that way.

But rather than find himself in even deeper shit over his supposed femininity, he elected for not just saying 'it doesn't make her look washed out,' and that was it. "It flatters her quite a bit, actually," he said.

"Okay, she's got a warm complexion," Saula said, grabbing a couple blushes that someone with a less practiced eye would lump together as 'coral.' "Warm undertones on fair and light skin look best with blushes in these shades-" she put the blushes on the counter for the vai to look at. "The peaches especially will bring out her natural flush, but the corals will mimic a blush. Don't let her get too head over heels for pinks, warm undertones don't do as well with pinks.

"For eye shadows, she'll want to stick to bronze and earthy shades," she said, picking out a few samples. "When she wishes to go for a more dramatic effect, if she were to go to a particularly nice party or something, then some shades of green will work well. Just as long as she remembers to stick to greens that lean more towards the yellow than the blue. Jewel-tones like blue don't work well for warm undertones. I'm including a couple of greens that have more blue though, just in case she's lucky enough to have a neutral undertone. If these greens look just fine on her, she likely has a neutral undertone."

She looked back at the vai. "Since you didn't say anything about the cream, I'm going to assume you've not seen her in it, or perhaps didn't notice. If you didn't notice, then it's likely she's actually got neutral undertones. But she should be prepared for jewel palettes to not be very flattering. The bronzes and earth colors are a safe bet, though."

Yup. Yuuup, that was all new to him. "I'll try to remember to warn her," he said, a bit bewildered by all of it.

His mother's indirect lessons came to his rescue, knowing what to ask about now, rather than get home and discover that Zelda had thought of something he wouldn't have otherwise. "Is eyeliner something Hylian women should worry about? I'm on the road a lot, most women out there worry about practicality more than women in town have to, so I don't see enough women wearing it to know if it's in fashion these days or not."

"I'd recommend against both eyeliner and mascara for regular traveling," Saula answered, picking out a basic black eyeliner and mascara. "Especially the mascara. It can run in a rain storm." She set the eyeliner and mascara on the counter next to what she'd already picked out. "However, when she isn't likely to encounter a lot of rain and has the chance, it is still very flattering. Gerudo-style eyeliner doesn't tend to look very flattering on Hylian vais, so she'll want to start small. She might be among the few who look good with what we call the smokey eye effect, but it's best to start small."

She studied the vai, a little hesitant to ask what crossed her mind. "I understand why you'd wish to avoid makeup for yourself, but your eyes are quite lovely. Explaining how to apply eyeliner is a little easier when you can demonstrate with the explanation. Would you object to me showing you how by putting some on you while you watch in a mirror?"

Link had to resist the urge to sigh. He knew that hesitating wouldn't look out of place, but looking long-suffering would be a bit much.

I hope that woman knows what I go through for her, he grumbled to himself.

It wasn't even that he was about to sit still and let a strange woman put makeup on him; as long as she didn't do a terrible job and make him look ridiculous, he didn't care. It wasn't something he'd normally do, but makeup was something people who were fussier about their appearances used than he was. He was only doing it now so he could help Zelda with something important to her.

It was that Riju was going to give him shit over it.

I predict with a 70% certainty that the queen will see for herself when you are able to assist her with what you would learn by allowing this Gerudo woman to demonstrate as she wishes, the Sword replied.

Now it was really hard to not look extremely tired, because really, did she have to be a smartass?

Reluctantly, he nodded. "If you think it would be easier," he consented.

"I believe it would be," Saula said sympathetically. "Please, sit." She slid over a stool for the vai while she grabbed a sample eyeliner pencil.

Once the vai was settled, Saula moved the mirror that- yes, was mounted, was mounted on a display wall that was separate from the walls of the building itself -to where the vai could watch what Saula was doing.

"Just so you know, it can be very difficult to not want to close your eyes when the pencil's near," she warned the vai. "It's not as difficult as when it's yourself using it, but it can sometimes take a little practice to not do it when others are applying it for you. So I need you to trust that I'm not going to poke you with this and keep your eyes open. It helps if you look a little to the side. But not too much, that would defeat the purpose if you couldn't watch what I'm doing."

This got better and better.

"Hit me," he said.

It felt like it took the woman entirely too long to put the eyeliner on, but given that it was for instructional purposes, and not because she was prettying him up, it was probably about the right amount of time. It took him a couple times of the pencil getting near to not close his eyes- she wasn't wrong about that -but there he sat, getting makeup put on him.

At least the finished product didn't look bad. He'd hate to go around the rest of the time in town looking terrible.

He was going to be washing that stuff off the second he was able to get away from town and could change. Under no circumstances was he going back to Hateno with that on. Even if he was willing to put up with the other residents giving him shit over it, he wasn't going to take even the sliver of a chance that it would become known why he was wearing that- or if he went for broke to play up the disguise and ever used it again -and have that information spread. The more people knew that there was a man waltzing about Gerudo Town, the higher the chances that someone who could cause trouble over it would find out.

And going around with even a little makeup was outside of what the townsfolk knew his character to be. It'd be more than a little noticed if he suddenly changed his ways that much, especially without a good reason.

...

Speaking of 'good reasons,' he had to make sure that Zelda didn't make this mandatory for formal events. He would give her more than bare minimum effort into his appearance for those, but putting on makeup was too far the other way for his tastes. Maybe at one time, it wouldn't have mattered one way or another, but he'd spent inching towards a year living as a homeless vagabond, the only attention he had to pay towards what he wore was how practical it was. He wasn't fond of the idea of having to be this fussy about his appearance on a regular basis, and at some point down the line, formal events were going to be more the norm than not.

...

Please don't let her make this mandatory, because goddess-damn-it-all, he'd indulge her, and he knew it.

Sigh. Civilization was a giant pain in the ass.

Saula capped the eyeliner pencil, studying her work, then smiled. "You really do look nice with that on. I think you should reconsider giving up on makeup entirely. Your eyes are amazing, you could make them really pop with the right shadow."

All right. Whoever is up there having fun at his expense, he gets it, this won't stop. There was the tiny chance that it might come in handy someday, and seeing it done would probably help him help Zelda more than just written instructions would. And he had a feeling it'd make this woman feel less guilty about the earlier fiasco.

Guess he got to be a science experiment.

Deciding to continue with the strange persona he'd built for 'Candace,' he settled on a skeptical-but-hopeful look. "If you really think so," he said.

Saula just barely kept her joy contained. Getting to return a vai's self-confidence in her appearance was a dream come true for a vai in her line of work.

"Look at it this way," she said, "even if you decide against it in the future, you can pass the technique I'm going to be using to your friend. But I think you'll be pleased with the results."

She stepped back, giving the vai a critical look. "I can tell that you definitely have cool undertones. Those gold accents on your clothes look too bright on you. Unfortunately, I don't have any alternatives to that, and I'm wishing I did now. But cool undertones means that not only will bronze and honey tones work well for eye shadow, lavender or a cool grey will look beautiful if you want something that really stands out."

Back to her supplies. She glanced back at the vai's outfit, taking in the forest green that dominated it, then selected a rich honey color, with an appropriate highlight and shadow. She wanted to run right to the lavender or grey, but that green invited honey more than either of those. She wanted the vai to feel pretty, and that included coordinating with her outfit more. And giving her colors that were more subtle to start with, rather than colors that made a bolder statement, would be like wading into the waters, rather than getting dumped in headfirst, and most people preferred the wading method to getting used to things.

"That is a beautiful shade of green on you," she said, walking back over to the vai. "I think this honey blend will compliment it nicely."

Link eyed the no less than three different colors of powder. How... how up to his neck was he now?

"That's... a lot of different eye shadows..." he said, not bothering to hide his confusion, nor the unspoken question in that statement.

Why?

Saula chuckled. "It seems like it to a beginner," she agreed, "but if Gerudo Town is going to be a special trip, you should get to enjoy it to its fullest. And your friend may appreciate something more than a single-color application. I'll write down what all of this is, I promise."

Saula took her time, making sure the vai had one eye open as she worked on the other, explaining what the transitional shade was, and the purpose of the highlight and shadow.

"You're wanting a gradient," she said as she worked. "Skin is hardly one solid color, after all, and even the boldest of colors, you want to look natural. That's why the blending brush is so important."

"My friend won't need a different set of brushes for each color scheme, will she?" Link asked, doing his best to not squint the eye that needed to be kept closed, no matter how much easier it'd make keeping his other eye open enough to even see what the woman was doing.

Oh goddess, please say no. Link was pretty sure even Zelda would feel overwhelmed by that at first.

"No," Saula assured her, hearing that note of protest in the vai's voice. "You can clean these with a bit of nappery, just brush the cloth until color isn't coming off the brush anymore."

She finished with the first eye, checking her work before declaring it satisfactory and stepping around the vai to get to her other side without blocking view of the mirror.

"When it comes to the second eyelid, obviously you want to get it to look as close to identical as the first as possible, but remember that your natural skin doesn't look identical across each side of your face, so don't stress over perfection. As long as the difference isn't dramatic, it won't hurt the look. And you'll get better the more you do it."

'The more you do it.'

Siiiiiiigh.

"I'll keep that in mind."

He'd have to be sure to remind Zelda of that, though. The constant pressure to 'get it right' she'd lived under should be cut off at the pass on this subject.

Saula took the time to go back over both eyelids, asking the vai to shut both eyes so she could see better, fussed with the blending a little, reminding the vai again that practice would make perfect, and try not to stress and nitpick, then stood back and admired her work.

You've really outdone yourself this time, ol' girl, she thought to herself.

"There. Take a look, tell me what you think."

She had her mental fingers crossed that the vai would be happy with the effect.

That... actually was not as bad as he was fearing.

Well hell, it'd make this woman happy if he really loved her work, and even he could tell that she was good at what she did.

He decided to take a moment to look shocked- 'Candace' had given up on getting to doll up and look pretty, after all, she couldn't possibly have seen something on her face looking so nice -then looked at the woman, stopping just shy of giving her fake tears of joy, because that seemed a little bit excessive.

"Thank you," he said, voice just positively choked with emotion.
