So. About them errands, huh?
((Man. How about all that self-play. It's what I get for playing 90% of the characters, I guess. :p And also currently the only character who can fling himself around the kingdom in seconds, so the job of errand boy has fallen to him. Purah's really got to come up with something for Zelda.))

After contacting Zelda and ending up with a laundry list of things he needed to get, as well as a brief panic when she asked about the sign outside his house, of all things, Link shifted his focus to his new agenda: getting a bunch of girly stuff.

His life went awry somewhere along the line, and he wasn't quite sure where. As much as he missed his sister, part of him was glad his early teen years weren't plagued by a teenage girl potentially trying to cajole him into being her practice dummy for learning how to apply makeup and do fancy hair styles. There was a good chance Marin would've ended up more like their grandmother than their mother on that front, but even so, that was an arrow he'd dodged.

It wasn't even getting dressed up like a woman that would've bothered him- when he was growing up, women were the ones with the power, it wasn't exactly an insult to look like one, and he had to do that later to get into Gerudo Town anyway -it was the idea of being turned into what amounted to a science experiment that would've annoyed him. Being told to sit and stay and be subjected to whatever his handlers wanted to do would've driven him crazy.

That, and he remembered being an adolescent boy, and he knew how adolescent girls acted, and he and his sister probably would've driven each other up the wall and down each other's throats.

... he still missed her, though.

He forcibly shoved that subject aside and focused back on the task at hand, most of which was just taking pictures, but the first thing he had to do was something that he wasn't ... exactly looking forward to. For a myriad of reasons, not the least of which was 'fessing up to having not told the entire truth to Zumi and Yammo earlier about his relationship status with Zelda. Although before he could do that, he had to 'fess up to himself about it. His side of things wasn't anything he'd been... too untruthful about- there was nothing that he'd given any thought to (and fighting his brain to keep it that way was sometimes a challenge) -but he knew damn well what Zelda's side was. Sure, there honestly was the chance that the years had changed her, but he had a feeling in his gut that they hadn't. He'd probably hide behind that possibility for awhile yet, but it was something he was going to have to face at some point.

Sometimes he wished he'd worked harder at not avoiding dealing with emotions after his initial grief over Marin had passed. It'd make things a lot easier on him. His tendency to shut down had helped him save face when the kingdom's spotlight was on him, but now it was just making things messy.

Oh, hey, brain. Nice of you to drift back to that subject. Let's stay on task, hmm?

The women had made pretty good time, all things considered, as Link could see them just on the other side of Proxim Bridge as he approached it. He nodded in greeting to Brigo, who still was holding his position as guard, though what he was guarding and why, Link wasn't sure. Whatever made him happy and gave him purpose, Link supposed.

Saula almost started tallying everything up, but paused, frowning slightly. She'd just made the vai feel pretty and confident in her looks, and now she had to remind her about the lipstick for her friend, something she obviously couldn't wear herself.

She looked back towards the clothing for something to focus on that wasn't obviously the makeup while she thought of how to approach that one.

Well, she'd approach it the way she did the eye shadow.

"There's still one more piece of makeup we're forgetting," she said, hoping that she wasn't going to be dashing that happiness she saw on the vai's face. "Lipstick. And I think it's important you know a good shade for yourself as well. Every vai should know what looks good on her. And you can't convince me that your lips wouldn't be prettier with a smile and a splash of color, even if you do feel more comfortable with the veil. Which looks lovely, by the way."

Oh please let that work.

Oh. Right. He'd actually forgotten about that.

He gave her another bashful look, though he knew to keep that one a little subdued, if he were keeping the Damaged Self-Body-Image routine up. "Thank you," he said. "But it really is more important I know what to get my friend."

"Maybe," Saula agreed, putting aside her brushes that she used for just such occasions. The vai's color set had brand new brushes for her. "But just in case."

Back into instruction mode. "There are a few looks a vai can go for with her lipstick, from nude to bolder statements. For medium skin with cool undertones, like you have, you'll want something with a slight hint of pink for the nude look. Using a true nude color will look washed out. For brighter colors, think berries. Blue-based reds, berries, pinks, and mauves are all good bets."

She decided to sneak in a couple samples of both a 'nude' and a wildberry, just so the vai had them. Just in case she changed her mind.

"Your friend has light skin with warm undertones, though, so she'll want to shy away berry-like colors. Warm undertones have peaches, golds, and yellows as a base gradient, whereas cool undertones have blues, pinks, and reds. So for her, a nude shade would be in the peaches area. For a bolder statement, as strange as this seems to vai who are unfamiliar with makeup, something with an orange base works fabulously. Straight orange can make for a fun statement, or if she's wanting something a bit higher class, a red with an orange base to it would look beautiful."

She turned back to her supplies, pulling out an elegant red with an orange undertone, and a red that had a more blue undertone, and brought them over. "Here's an orange-based red compared to a blue-based red, so you can see what I mean. It's still definitely red, but the orange base is going to flatter her warm undertones. Remember what I said about making things look natural while still having a pop of color with the eye shadow? That's the tip you'll want to keep in mind. Her skin has natural peach and gold in it, she wants to keep to makeup that has similar base colors. Makeup may obviously not be a vai's natural coloring, but using conflicting color bases between your skin and your makeup will make you look slapped on and too obviously fake. Makeup is meant to enhance your natural beauty, not try to overwhelm it with something else."

At the vai's absolutely overwhelmed look, she laughed. "Don't worry, I'll write all this down. But if you ever find yourself looking for more than what I've gathered up here and you can't come here to ask me, you know how to judge what colors you should be looking at, and which ones you shouldn't."

Despite how... yes, overwhelmed, that's a good word to use. Despite how overwhelmed he was by the massive info dump on something that had never been in his sphere of interest, at least that info dump made some of it finally make sense. He hadn't exactly sat down and absorbed all of his mother's indirect lessons with rapt interest, only remembered enough to not be completely clueless when he came into the shop, so whatever science there was behind the art of makeup was lost on him.

He had no idea how he was supposed to guess any of this undertone stuff for anyone else, but there was a rhyme and reason to it, which meant he could actually give Zelda a useful opinion if she wanted one.

"Thank you," he said. "That's very helpful." That wasn't even an act. It was about time someone made it less confusing.

He side-eyed the lipsticks he saw her sneak into the little pack with the colors she wanted him to have. Yeah, he saw that. And that was going to be given to a better cause than sitting in a drawer in the washroom, gathering dust.

"You're very welcome," Saula said, hardly able to contain her glee, going back to the paper she had been writing all of her advice and tips and techniques on for the vai to take to her friend. "I'm going to make sure I didn't miss anything on here, then start tallying up your total. If you'd like to browse anything else while you wait, feel free."

Link hadn't forgotten about the head scarf and veil for Zelda, he'd just gotten forcibly sidetracked by an extended makeup lesson. So while the woman went through what was probably going to be a long and tedious process of writing and adding, he headed back over to the clothing to see what she had- if anything, and oh lady, she'd better -on that front.

And take the time to retrieve his fake wallet from the Slate. He eyed the prices listed for just the clothing and realized he was probably walking away with a price tag of a couple thousand rupees less than he'd been expecting.

Now he really felt bad about accepting that makeup she didn't want to charge him for.

There didn't seem to be any variety in the head scarf and veil sets, so with a mental shrug, he grabbed one at random and took it back over to the rest of his purchase.

Saula gave the fact that the vai set something else down a brief moment of thought, before finishing writing down all of the information she'd promised.

"You found something else?" she asked, tucking the papers filled with text into the bag she already had started to put together. "Oh, another veil?"

"My friend doesn't want me to feel like I stand out next to her when we come here," he explained. "So she said she'd wear one too. The makeup was my idea, to say thank you."

And thus, secret identity preserved.

That warmed Saula's heart more than the desert sun could ever hope to. "You two must be very special to each other," she said, getting a bag to start wrapping everything up in. She scribbled down the price of each piece as it went into the bag.

Link watched the numbers go up, mentally checking her math, though he knew that she did this for a living, she wasn't likely to screw up.

When she presented a final total of only just over a thousand rupees, he was a bit shocked at how low it was. Most clothing stores out there wanted to charge an arm and a leg.

"Are you sure that number's right?" he asked. "That seems too low."

"You sound like another businessperson I know," he said with amusement, shaking his head and unhooking the wallet from the back of his belt, where he'd hidden it under his shield. He'd realized almost too late that he didn't really have any other place it could've been hiding in that entire transaction.

After a couple thwarted attempts to sneak a tip in for her, he gave up and paid her her asking price, taking the bag full of stuff that was 95% for Zelda, and a 5% that shouldn't have existed but there you go for him after he got the wallet hooked back on his belt.

There. Makeup and clothes out of the way. Jewelry and- shit, he forgot about hair clips.

He wondered if it'd look too strange if he went back in and admitted he'd entirely forgotten about that.

Perhaps the hair accessories would be best left until after Miss Zumi has had a chance to evaluate what would be needed? the Sword suggested.

Not a bad idea.

All right, jewelry.

Isha had been ridiculously happy these past few weeks, and the past few days especially, as Naboris's fury being calmed, and the disappearance of that could around Hyrule Castle, had led to more business, more vai coming in seeking beautiful jewelry that she was happy to help design and create and sell to them.

And then entered the little Hylian vai who'd helped her reopen her business, toting a shopping bag that she recognized as being from Saula's store. Which meant that the vai was on a "make the world (or just me) pretty" shopping quest.

"I was hoping I'd get to see you again," she told the vai, who'd already started staring at the front counter offered designs. "I really can't thank you enough for helping me out."

Link had been on a mission and had (a bit rudely) forgotten to say anything to the woman who owned the shop, until Isha speaking up reminded him of her presence.

"Hm? Oh." There were times when he was in Gerudo Town that he wished it was safe enough to not have to wear a veil, just so he could actually smile without having to exaggerate it enough that the rest of his face conveyed it. "It wasn't any trouble," he assured her. "Actually, I'm hoping you can return the favor. I'm shopping for a friend of mine, she's tethered to her job at the moment and can't come out here on her own. She just came out of a bad situation without anything to her name, I thought some jewelry might make her happy."

Isha wasn't hampered by the presence of a veil when she wanted to smile, but the warmth in her eyes would've made up for one if she was. "That's a thoughtful gift," she said. "Tell your friend that I hope things get better for her. Did you have any ideas about what she might like? I can design something for her, if you gave me some ideas to work with. It'd take a little time, though."

"Knowing her, once she's got her feet under her again, she'd love to take you up on that," Link said. "But something that's not custom designed is still nice, and you do good work. She shouldn't have to wait until she's up for coming down here herself just to have a couple of nice necklaces."

Oh lady, he was going to be having to let Zelda come in without him to submit her requests for custom jewelry; he could almost guarantee that most of what she'd want would be for her formal appearances, and it wouldn't look good if that random little Hylian vai was getting custom designs on behalf of the queen, when she was never seen in her company elsewhere. Right back to that problem.

Sigh. He didn't like the idea of her wandering out on her own, especially not right down in Yiga territory. Whether her magic would work on regular monsters or not, he didn't know, but he really doubted it'd do anything against them. And it was too hot for him to stand outside the walls in anything resembling appropriate for the queen's personal knight to be wearing.

He'd have to think of something.

Isha practically glowed with delight at the compliment. It never failed to make her happy when someone liked her work.

"Thank you," she said. "I have to confess that the owner's the one who does the elbow grease part of the work." She looked a tiny bit embarrassed. "We do the designs together, though. So it's more of a pair of artists with grand designs, and one handles the physical work while the other handles the business side. So your friend will want to talk to us both when she's ready to come in."

"Oh good," Link said, resisting the urge to laugh too much- harder to keep the voice down enough to disguise his gender if he's laughing loudly. "You'll want the back up. She can be stubborn when she gets an idea in her head, it'll probably take both of you to stand up to her and tell her she's being silly."

Even though picking out jewelry didn't require a lesson about skin gradients and matching complimentary colors, it was a bit more tedious than the makeup shopping had been. He knew to stick to gold, thanks the makeup lesson, and he knew blue stones were a safe bet, though there was a necklace that looked like it had the same pattern as the gold accents on the clothes he got for her that had that cinnabar on it, so he picked that one while he was at it.

When Isha brought up earrings, he realized he'd never seen Zelda with earrings. That didn't mean her ears weren't pierced, but it made not getting any right then a 'better safe than sorry' decision.

He got talked into getting a pair for himself, though. Apparently his were starting to look 'scuffy.' He put his foot down on the issue of how fancy they should be. Good grief, none of these women knew the value of simple and practical.

But it was ultimately a fairly boring transaction of "that looks like she might like it," and wrapping up his purchases. Isha was doing her best to make it more exciting than he found it, and for someone who had much investment in jewelry, it might've been interesting. Link had never been big about jewelry for himself, his earrings aside, and those were apparently too plain and 'scuffy' for him to be able to pretend otherwise.

It was also a much more expensive transaction than the makeup and clothes had been. It was a good thing he had a lot of money hoarded in the Slate. Three thousand rupees for three necklaces and a bracelet. Yeesh.

After leaving the store, he stopped and took another mental tally of what he needed to get- makeup and clothes for Zelda, which came with a set of written instructions and explanation of the science behind the former, thus saving him from having to suffer one from Riju. Jewelry. Hair clips, he was waiting until Zumi could decide what she needed.

Journals. That's right.

Well, the stall next to the clothing store looked like it might be a regular general store, which was promising. He'd never been in there before, so he had no idea if that was even something they'd sell, but he wasn't sure where else to go off the top of his head. Maybe Kakariko. He'd try there if this store didn't pan out.

The goddess decided to be merciful and spared him an extra trip to Kakariko, as the general store- as that was what it turned out to be -had blank books for sale. He wasn't sure if that was part of their normal inventory, but like hell was he going to protest.

He almost walked out with just that, done for the day, stop in and say hi to Riju and return the Thunder Helm (and pass along Zelda's message, he'd almost forgotten about that), and finally go home, when he spotted what looked like a pocket charm in the shape of a Silent Princess, on a display table on his way out the door. Closer inspection revealed it was a hair clip, looked like an old antique that the shopkeeper had possibly just had sitting around forever and got sick of trying to sell at a respectable price.

He recognized quality enough when he saw it to know that the ten rupees the shop keep charged him was a gross undervaluing. He outright offered her more on the principle of both that rupee hoarding problem he clearly had, and that she was getting robbed with that ten rupees.

She seemed surprised, but honestly, the Gerudo were well-known for their metal working, all she had to do was take that to Isha and the other owner to get it appraised and know that she should charge way more than ten rupees. He wasn't an expert, but he could tell that was bronze, had seen more than enough statues back in Castle Town and the castle itself of heroes and queens from so far back that nobody could even remember the time the people had lived in. 'Some thousands of years ago' was the best anyone could tell, and the statues had all been in good condition. No amount of polishing and upkeep would keep a metal from corroding eventually, and while one could never describe those statues as 'pristine,' they didn't look like they were as old as they were known to be.

A piece of jewelry didn't have to have traditional gemstones to worth their weight in gold. That bronze was far to old to not have achieved 'antique' status, which added a historical value to it.

Not about to rip the woman off, he offered fifty times her asking rate, told her that he'd even take it to Isha to make sure he hadn't underpaid her, though she declined that part, was more than happy with the five hundred rupees.

Well, not completely rip her off. Given that the Silent Princess was a favorite flower of the royal daughters for several generations before Zelda, for all he knew, that had been hers, or had belonged to one of her ancestresses, and it'd just been looted from the castle sometime after Zelda contained Ganon's power enough to shut down the Guardians and make it semi-safe to go in.

If that was the case, that hair clip was worth a lot more than five hundred rupees. But if he said anything that would hint it might have been a royal treasure, she might not have been willing to sell it at all.

There. Now he was done shopping.

Time to go see Riju.

He was sure she was going to wonder what on earth he was doing this time, trudging into her throne room with three shopping bags, one entirely too big for his tastes, the Slate on backwards, without an army-worthy arsenal on his back, and what two weapons he had on his lower back like a Gerudo and not strapped over his shoulder like he preferred. Never before had he gone in there taking this big of an extra mile to pass as a woman.

And wearing makeup.

Before she could say anything, he immediately pointed at her. "Not. A word. One of your merchants insisted on putting this stuff on me."

Link gave her an amused look of exaggerated patience. "You would expect anything less from one of your ladies?" he said. Then he shrugged. "I had to come get stuff for Zelda, and I ended up with an extended lesson into the art and science of undertones. And got conned into being given a demonstration in blending."

He gave a glance around the building for signs of any other guards, then set the shopping bags down and unclipped the Slate from his hip. "You got out of trying to explain to a grown man how to put on makeup without laughing too hard to talk. I'd been originally instructed to ask you. The shopkeep seemed way too happy to make the strange vai who hid behind a veil 'feel pretty.'" Another glance around, then he selected the inventory rune and retrieved the Thunder Helm. "I needed to get this back to you anyway though, so here I am, all pretty and made up, just in time to see the Gerudo Chief."

Okay, now that he'd headed off too much laughing at the pass, he could have a good sense of humor about it.

"Oh, thank you, I've been missing this," she said, taking the Helm from him and putting it in its rightful place beside her, stepping back after a fond pet over the crown of the helm. Then she climbed back up on the throne.

"Speaking of the Princess, when do I get to meet her?" Riju was practically bouncing in her throne now at the mere thought. "How is she? You were picking up makeup for her? She must be feeling all right if she's wanting makeup. How is everyone reacting to her and you? Do they know who you two are? Tell me everything!"

"When you get to meet Zelda is probably within a few days," he said, at once tired and amused by her. A leader she may have been, but a kid she still was. "We promised Dorephan we'd stop in and see him and take a look at Ruta tomorrow, but assuming the house we're living in can be remodeled the way we want, we'll probably be spending a lot of time after that making the rounds around Hyrule, and she's wanting to meet you."

Since he had the Slate out, he decided to stow his shopping bags in its inventory function. "As far as when you get to meet with the queen of Hyrule, that one I'm not sure on. But we'll be needing a neutral place for that, since I'm not allowed in here in my official role as the captain of the queen's guard."
