Family Traditions

Lucius Malfoy strode confidently down Diagon alley, his cane clicked on the cobblestones in tandem with his shiny black boots. His head was lifted high and proud as he made his way through the dim light of The Leaky Cauldron. Beside him, his young son Draco did his best to mimic his father’s every move.

This was Draco’s first time out on a Muggle street. He was terribly excited, but a little scared. He’d heard you could catch terrible diseases from Muggles. Things like Chicken Pops. If you caught Chicken Pops, chickens would pop right out of your skin by the hundreds. He looked up at his father’s angular face. Lucius’ face was fixed in a contemptuous sneer as he looked down his nose at the Muggles passing by, but Draco saw no hint of fear. If his father wasn’t afraid, then Draco wouldn’t be either. He jutted his jaw out a little farther.

“Where are we going, Father?” he asked. He’d already asked at least twenty times since he got up and knew he probably shouldn’t do so again, but he couldn’t help himself.

“Patience Draco,” Lucius reminded with an indulgent smile. “You will find out soon enough.”

They walked quickly through the London streets until they reached a small park. Muggle children were everywhere. Draco saw several kids throwing a Frisbee. How boring, he thought, it didn’t even have fangs. Lucius motioned for Draco to follow him out of sight behind a large boxwood hedge.

“Draco, do you know what today is?” he asked in his drawling voice.

“Yes Father,” Draco replied, beaming. “It’s my 5th birthday.”

“That’s right, son,” Lucius nodded. He continued in a solemn tone, “A fifth birthday is a very special occasion for a young man.”

Draco nodded in agreement, trying to look very wise and grown up.

“There is a tradition in the Malfoy family, Draco,” Lucius said as he pulled a long rectangular box from his robe pocket. It was wrapped in emerald green paper. Silver snakes slithered across it in parallel lines. In his eagerness, Draco immediately reached for the present.

Holding it just out of Draco’s reach, Lucius chided his son, “You must learn to wait patiently. No matter how much you want something, never let anyone else know.”

Draco looked down at his feet. “Yes Sir,” he mumbled.

Lucius knelt in front of Draco and pushed the boy’s chin up with his forefinger. Giving him a small, reassuring smile he said, “A Malfoy never ever drops his chin.”

Draco grinned and jutted his pointed chin up with pride, “Yes Sir!”

“Here you go,” Lucius said, handing Draco the package with a chuckle.

Draco tore open the paper and lifted the lid on the box to find a small wooden wand inside. He looked up at his father in awe, “For me? Is it real?”

Lucius nodded, “Every Malfoy is presented his first junior wand at age five.”

Draco threw his arms around Lucius and buried his face in his father’s mane of white blonde hair, “Thank you father.”

Lucius wrapped his long arms around his son, closing his eyes as he savored the rite of passage. It seemed only yesterday Draco was a baby, snuggled in Cissy’s arms as she rocked him to sleep. When he inhaled deeply enough, Lucius thought he could find the tiniest hint of that baby scent still lingering in his son’s hair.

“What will you teach me first, Father?” Draco asked earnestly after Lucius released him.

“To hex Muggles, of course.”
