Pennsylvania :

Asylum Township - French aristocrats moved from Haiti to the town, and stayed there until Napoleon let them back in France. (Yup, a bunch of rich people hiding from their government.)

Bird-in-Hand - According to legend, two road surveyors discussed whether they should stay at their present location or push onward to the township of Lancaster. One of them supposedly said, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." (The town, though relatively small, has an interesting history filled with Quakers, Swiss Mennonites and the Railroad.)

Oregon :

Sublimity - A settler named James Denny suggested the name because of the fine vista and sublime scenery in the hills around the town. (After looking at images of the town and the surrounding area... I agree with. Stunning would also work.)

Boring - Named after William Harrison Boring and is the sister-city of Dull, Scotland and Bland, New South Wales, Australia. Gravity Falls and Everything Sucks is based on the city. (Hmm, I have never seen either of the shows, but the city is beautiful.)

Oklahoma :

Bowlegs - Named after an early resident Lula Bowlegs. (Yeah, I have no shame here. The first person I thought of was Jensen Ackles. If you know, you know.)

Dead Women Crossing - In July 1905, Katie DeWitt James was murdered, her head severed from her body and a gun belonging to Fannie Norton. Later, Norton was seen riding in a buggy going breakneck speed, holding Katie's 18 month old daughter, Lulu Belle.

Later a farmer noted there was blood on the wheel and child's dress when she gave him the girl.

She was caught in Shawnee, Ok. She denied killing James, but couldn't be asked further as she poisoned herself. (Yes, this is a long one. But would you have been satisfied with 'they found a dead woman?)

Facts: (Unique Town/City Names)

Ohio :

Chagrin Falls - Some say it's an Indigenous word meaning 'clear' (:/). Others say it's because Moses Cleveland's consternation at the river's many sandbars and shallow areas. (I thought it's because of the feeling that you get when looking up information about the town.)

Mount Healthy - Originally founded in 1817 as Mount Pleasant. It renamed itself in 1850 as cholera broke out in the surrounding territories, but not there. (I thought that it was because getting and staying healthy can seem like climbing a mountain.)

North Dakota :

Enderlin - Was named after the supposed German-sounding words “Ender Line” meaning the end of the line. Which makes sense, since the rail way ended there for awhile. (The name made me think of the Enderman in Minecraft. Which I have never played, but my kids did.)

Inkster - Founded in 1884, in an area that had been settled by George T. Inkster in 1878. (Those who know me, can probably guess on why I chose this town.)

North Carolina :

Fuquay-Varina - (pronounced: FYOO-kway vuh-REE-nuh) Originally named Varina a"May we think of freedom, not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to do what is right." ~ Peter Marshall named the town Varina after a woman that the postmaster was sweet for. Later Fuquay was added because Frenchman William Fuquay first settled in the small farming town. (I guess he just wanted to get Fuquay. Tacky? Probably. Do I care? Not in the slightest.)

Waxhaw - Named after the indigenous Native American tribe who lived there prior to colonial settlement. (Not going to make fun of it. Every language has something that sounds... Wrong or funny in their native tongue. Proof: Chin-chin is a toast in Italy... In Japan it's what a child would call the... Male anatomy between his legs.)

New York :

Butternuts - Butternuts is generally believed to be named for three butternut (a.k.a. white walnut) trees growing from one stump. (I didn't know white walnut was called butternut. Though, I do love butter pecan ice cream.)

Catskill - (please note: there are many Theories about the origin of the name. I am choosing the I like the best.) The original name was 'Kaaterskill' (Wildcat Creek) given by the Dutch settlers, who noted the amount of mountain lions and bobcats that roamed the area. (Some theories were... Graphic. A named that morphs over time is more common than not. Also Catskill is the location of the story "Rip Van Winkle" by Washington Irving.)

Truth or Consequences - Originally named Hot Springs it changed its name as the result of a radio show contest. In March 1950. (Well, it's unique.)

Elephant Butte - Named after a butte (a hill) nearby thought to resemble an elephant. (It could be worse. At least it's original.)

New Jersey :

Deal - Named by an English carpenter, Thomas Whyte, from Deal, England. (Nostalgia was strong when we were first arrived.)

Egg Harbor City - Settled by the Dutch in 1614, it was originally named "Eyren Haven" (Egg Haven) after the large number of gull eggs in the area. (The town should petition to revert to its original name. It just sounds better.)

Lovelock - Known as the "Banana Belt" (@.@) Named after George Lovelock, who provided 85 acres to the settlement. (I was hoping for something more romantic.)

Yerington - Named after the Yerington Paiute Tribe. (:/ It's a city in the middle of the desert. What can I say?)

Nebraska :

Superior - Victorian Capital of Nebraska named after the quality of its land. (Took some searching for the reason.)

Weeping Water - There is a stream running through the city called 'Nigahoe', which translates into "rustling water" which was wrongly recorded as the French word 'Nihoage' which translates to "water weeping." (It's amazing how one changed letter can change everything.)

Facts: (Unique Town/City Names)

Montana :

Wolf Point - The name is a point of contention and dispute with various reasons for the name. It is beside Wolf Creek at one point or there was an abundance of wolves when the Louise and Clark expedition made its way through there. (I really like wolves... So I am leaning towards the later.)

Froid - A French word meaning 'cold'. Seeing as the town is located at the northern part next to Lake Medicine and Canada. (I am sure it is lovely, but this Texan will stay in the warmth. I thought that the name was a Freudian slip.)

Licking - Named for a mineral lick near the original town site. An early name thrown around was Buffalo Lick. (There are all kinds of images running through my head.)

Sturgeon - A railroad town next to an Amish settlement named after Isaac Sturgeon. (I don't know, the name seems fishy to me.)

Alligator - Named after Alligator Lake, which once held a large alligator. (Honestly, I would have thought that this was a Florida city!)

Coffeeville - Named after John Coffee, not the morning beverage to help you wake up. (Okay, now I am craving a cup of coffee.)
