Facts: (Unique Town/City Names)

Georgia :

Hopeulikit - Pronounced Hope-u-like-it The town was named for a popular dance hall that once resided here in the 1920s. (They supposedly have great bbq there. I cannot vouch, never been.)

Between - A little town that marks the halfway point between Athens and Atlanta. (Kind of a unique way to tell how far you've gone and have to go between the towns.)

Facts: (Unique Town/City Names)

Florida :

Okahumpka - It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the location of the Historic Campbell House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (Finding out these towns is like taking a gator to the dentist!)


Yeehaw Junction - According to town historians and several original newspaper articles that are displayed at the Desert Inn and Restaurant, the town was originally named "Jackass Junction" or "Jackass Crossing" (I don't even know.)

Delaware :

Slaughter Beach - actually a marine sanctuary and named after a postmaster. (Sorry, no mass murder of anything to see here.)

Rising Sun-Lebanon - Yes, there is a - in the town name. Named after a tavern. (There is more than one town named after a tavern in Delaware.)

Connecticut :

Killingly - nothing creepy or gory, it got its name like a lot of places, being homesick and was named after the town of Killinghall in Yorkshire, England. (I openly admit that there are some stunning homes there.)

Mystic - got its name because Colonists couldn't pronounce the Native name: Missi-tuk, which meant "great tidal river." (So, less mystic and more "Oops, my bad.")

California :

Weed - Now, you're probably chuckling and going duh, California and cannabis and you would be wrong. It’s named after Abner Weed, a lumber mill owner who founded the town in the late 1800s. (Learn something new every day.)

Rough and Ready - Named after the Rough and Ready Mining Company, which was named after the 12th president, General Zachary Taylor. Who had the nickname “Old Rough and Ready.” (Reads more like a history lesson than the backstory of a town name.)

Arkansas :

Weiner - Originally named West Prairie, but travelers started to call this train stop town, Weiner instead and the name stuck. (A nickname became the name. Yikes, what a name.)

Goobertown - Post Civil War a bunch of farmers settled there to raise goobers, peanuts. (The evolution of the English language and the meaning of words is wild.)

Arizona :

Nothing - named in 1977, they strive to believe in one thing... Nothing. (Sounds very Gen X... Yes, my generation.)

Why - They originally wanted to name it Y after their Y intersection, but Arizona has a rule that the names must have at least 3 letters, hence the name Why. (I have already explained Why Not. 🤪)

Alaska :

Chicken - Legend has it that they left the task to a painter to paint the name of a local bird, Ptarmigan, without writing it out and the man instead painted the only bird he could spell correctly: Chicken. (Spell checking and clear directions have been an ongoing need.)

Unalaska - There is no clear history on the name. The town was named that BEFORE The United States of America purchased Alaska. I just that it an ironic name.

Seman - According to record they had a town meeting to come up with a town name. They couldn't come to an agreement. So, they went with Names spelled backwards. (Get your mind out of the gutter.)

Screamer - there are a few theories about the origin. From hearing tribal war screams to something more blush worthy. (Choose your own theory. Seems like everyone else has.)

Wisconsin :

No person shall throw or shoot any object, arrow, stone, snowball, other missile or projectiles, by hand or by any other means, at any other person or at, in or into any building, street, sidewalk, alley, highway, park, playground, or other public place within the city of Wausau. (Okay, do I agree with most of this... Minus snowballs and projectiles is too vague. I, now, openly admit to using spitballs against my bullies. Most teachers knew it was done in retaliation.)

According to state Statute 944.16, adultery is a Class I Felony punishable by $10,000 and three years in jail. (They take adultery seriously. Not as serious as I do. I warned my husband that if ye cheats, I will make Lorena Bobbitt look like a newborn kitten. He may look all he likes, as long as there is no touching.)

West Virginia :

You are prohibited to bring Leopards to church. (This law extends to tigers, lions and snakes. Why is anyone bringing dangerous animals to church?)

It's illegal to tell a miner when they can sleep. (I understand this. This is an extremely taxing job, both mentally and physically job and they grab sleep when and where they can.)

It’s Illegal to Attach a “Leash” to a Human. (I have no shame in admitting that I leashed both of my daughters around their waist... And they enjoyed pulling me around.)

It’s illegal to pick flowers from public spaces or protected areas without permission. (Yes, flowers are pretty, but leave them alone.)
