Plans, schematics, schemes of all kinds... they're Lex Luthor's forte. Sometimes, they're cool, like the gun he designed to kill Swamp Thing.
Sometimes, they're terrible, like the kryptonite cage he cleverly disguised to " [capture] Superboy through his sheer dumbness! "
Sometimes, they're just plain WTF, like the jetpack he built out of a fast food place's kitchen.
( And sometimes, as in Rick Veitch's Question.. )

It's Not About The Answers: Behind The Mask Of Vic Sage, pt 9
O'Neil: Vic the Seeker (pt 5)
I've worn myself out doing little dances over the announcement for Question #37, so I figured I'd celebrate another way, especially since it's been a month and a half since my last post in this series.
We're going through Question v1 #'s 13 & 14 today, a two-parter that runs Vic's endurance, conviction, martial training and detective skills through the gauntlet as he takes on a elite special forces unit gone rogue. I was originally going to put #15 in this post as well, but after re-reading it I'm still not quite sure of my take on it, and it's subject matter is heavy enough that it should be analyzed on its own.

The Blue Beetle's Enemies, Part the Next: Doctor Alchemy and the Madmen! (yeah, Doctor Alchemy's a Flash villain. Not all of his villains are original to the series, but they fight Beetle nonetheless.)
so, after the Incendiary Man's vanishing (complete with a "We found no body in the fire", leaving him open to a return, which he apparently pulls off as a kill-people-with-fire-for-hire guy at a time down the road), it's time for one of the several foreshadowings laid out over the past two issues to pay off.
( Foreshadowings like this one, from Blue Beetle #2... )

It's Not About The Answers: Behind The Mask Of Vic Sage, pt 8 A Martial Arts Week special!
O'Neil: Vic the Seeker (pt 4) The Great Fables Crossover! (sorry Vertigo fans, not that one)
In 1988, Denny O'Neil set off to tell a great martial arts epic, and close the book on the O-Sensei, the old master introduced in Kung-Fu Fighter, responsible for teaching Richard Dragon, Bronze Tiger and Lady Shiva. While I prolly should've held this one off until after I'd posted the arc from Question v1 16-18, where Vic and Ollie first met, well, who's fault was it starting Martial Arts Week now? But though this crossover takes place in titles starring Batman, Green Arrow and The Question,

O'Neil: Vic the Seeker (pt 3) Tot's Reckoning
There comes a time in every title's life where the supporting characters must take center-stage and play the largest role in a story-arc's major plot while the star runs around around looking silly and ineffectual.

After the first arc, O'Neil's series tended toward Vic confronting a Curiousity of the Month, set against the backdrop of a Hub City trying desperately (and mostly failing) to put itself back together.

It's Not About The Answers: Behind The Mask Of Vic Sage, pt 5 O'Neil: Vic the Seeker (pt 1) featuring the Post-Crisis debuts of Tot, Lady Shiva and Richard Dragon!
When last we left our hero, he was brought up on charges by the Cool Quota Cops. In the two months between his appearance in Blue Beetle and the debut of his very first self-titled series, he was found by a jury of his super-cool peers guilty of hubris in the first-degree. The sentence, carried out February 1987 by Dennis O'Neil and Denys Cowan...

Tonight we're looking at Blue Beetle v6 #'s 5-7, by Len Wein and Paris Cullins. There's a lot of crazy meta stuff surrounding this arc. It ends two months before Ted plays his part in the Legends cross-over, which lead to JLI, so he hasn't really fostered any relationships with DC natives yet, so they apparently decided to reinforce his friendship with a fellow Charlton immigrant first. Also, and really, really interestingly, Vic's guest spot in BB #'s 4-7 (#4, if you'll remember, we glanced at in our last post) were released concurrently with the first four issues of Watchmen. It's makes me curious as to whether this arc happened to further establish Vic and Ted's partnership in order to legitimatize the homage of Rorschach and Nite Owl. It's a lot to think about.

Vic and Cigarettes, not good friends. So, I've had a bit of a crazy week, which is why my next It's Not About The Answers post has been delayed, but two things that kind of slipped in struck me. The first is that I started smoking again because this has been a crazy week, and I needed it. The second is I started reading 52 because I hadn't bothered with the parts that don't involve Vic and Renee before.
I'll hopefully get the Blue Beetle #5-7 post done before this week's up. Things are lining up weirdly and I don't have nearly as much downtime as the vacation gave me, but we'll see.

It's Not About The Answers: Behind The Mask Of Vic Sage, pt 3
Intermission: Hangin' With Beetle (pt 1) with special bonus: Vic Walks In Two Worlds
In 1981, after thirteen years of surviving on licensed comics, Charlton was falling apart. A new volume of Charlton Bullseye was launched to feature new talent and hopefully strike gold, and the first issue went to writer Benjamin Smith and artist Dan Reed, who decided the thing Charlton needed was something it already had.

Ditko: Vic the Enforcer (pt 1)
In the mid-60s, after his falling out with Marvel, Steve Ditko returned to Charlton, for whom he'd earlier co-created Captain Atom. In addition to working on that character, Ditko created two new ones who would prove to be among the more enduring of the Charlton heroes, and he featured them in the same book. Carrying the title was Ted Kord, Ditko's successor to the classic Fox Features Hero, but it isn't Ted that brings us here today.
