Baron Mordo shot and killed in Los Angeles
This just in. Karl Mordo, evil sorceror who has long been a public menace to our dimension, was killed this afternoon by a single gunshot wound to the head. Apparently this mundane weapon took him by surprise.

In custody, the unnamed perpretator is quoted as saying, "The fool was throwing gang signs. He dissed my hood, I had to pop a cap on his ass."

Mordo's longtime arch-enemy Dr Stephen Strange of New York City reportedly could not stop laughing long enough to make a comment. In lieu of flowers, the Mordo family asks that goats be sacrificed to the Dread Dormammu.

"If only that Ditko fellow was less subtle and more overt regarding his personal politics ..."
For as much fail as it churns out, Big Hollywood occasionally offers some genuine gems.

I can't stand Objectivism, but I find Steve Ditko's treatment of it irresistibly compelling, perhaps because the comic book medium is a far more appropriate venue for such a Manichean philosophy than the thousand-page rape-justifying tomes that Ayn Rand routinely shat out (it certainly helps that none of Ditko's characters ever barfed up a 70-page screed like John Galt, not to mention the fact that Ditko actually managed to create characters who were more believable as human beings than any of Rand's strawmen or Mary Sues, even when his characters were radioactivity-powered superheroes).

The following four pages constitute "In Principle: The Unchecked Premise," a short story originally published in the 160-page graphic novel Steve Ditko's Static in 1988:

As crudely simplistic as it is, it's still better than either reading or watching the "fireplace scene" between Howard Roark and Dominique Francon in The Fountainhead, but then again, so is getting punched in the crotch until you hemorrhage internally and die.

The man the power ring picked before Hal
We all know that Hal Jordan was chosen to become Green Lantern because the power ring found him to be most worthy of all the inhabitants of Earth. In this story from Action Comics Weekly, however, we meet the other ten individuals who the ring considered before settling on Jordan, including the one who was deemed worthier than Jordan and chosen ahead of him. (Guy Gardner and John Stewart were two of ten, obviously.)

The Show Must Go On

This was brought up numerous times in the previous Amazing Spider-Man thread, so I decided to post it once and for all. In my opinion, it's one of the better Chameleon stories out there. Not surprisingly, Marvel has all but forgotten it.

On a related note, this was the first Spidey story written by Paul Jenkins. He would later become the writer for Peter Parker Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man.

It's Not About The Answers: Behind The Mask Of Vic Sage, pt 1

Ditko: Vic the Enforcer (pt 1)

In the mid-60s, after his falling out with Marvel, Steve Ditko returned to Charlton, for whom he'd earlier co-created Captain Atom. In addition to working on that character, Ditko created two new ones who would prove to be among the more enduring of the Charlton heroes, and he featured them in the same book. Carrying the title was Ted Kord, Ditko's successor to the classic Fox Features Hero, but it isn't Ted that brings us here today.

Spider-Man physics, you're doing it wrong!
I came across a few pages of hidden gems from WAAAAAY back... We're talking Spider-Man #2 and #3, so I don't think spoiler warnings apply here.  These are things where even at the most basic level, it dosen't make any freaking sense.  =p  But it's amusing!

An old but goodie, when the hero was measured by the strength of his heart, not his might.

Steve Ditko was not at his best by 1980
Some time ago, on the old S_D, I made reference to a particularly bad panel of Steve Ditko's art on Legion of Super-Heroes, in the 80s... After mentioning it, I was asked to post the panel, but I didn't remember which issue it was in, and couldn't find it. I've since found it, so...I now post it.

It wasn't good. )
