by request, Huntress/Question (finale)
I've had my six hours of sleep, so I'm back to wrap this bit up with a few scans from Gotham Knights #'s 38 and 39, the only time a writer other than Rucka referred to the pairing in the DCU.

The story involves Checkmate kidnapping, drugging, interrogating, and psychoanalyzing Helena to decide if she's a proper candidate for their Black Queen. It's kind of dumb, plays a bit on the Helena-is-crazy string so many writers like to unfortunately pluck, and inexplicably puts her in the Helena Wayne costume (though she's only in-costume during drug-induced hallucinations, so possibly justified?) which I guess is better than the alternative? In general, the Alfred-is-maybe-dying? subplot caught my attention more, and I kinda need to seek out the issues around this to see where that went.

Anyway, the only reason I'm even bothering with this story is because these things happen.

Vic's kind of a cipher here. I can't see anything here that actually connects him to the guy we know behind the mask. It's not the presence of out-of-character qualities so much as absence of in-character qualities. Like I said, complete cipher. The only reason he's here is because of a past connection to Helena.

In the next issue, Helena's escaped and headed back home, but she's not home free yet.

(you don't want to see what they say about Helena in the rest of that page, it's...egregious)

And there you have it! After this page, it's never seen or acknowledged again! And couldn't it at least have been acknowledged better? Vic just pops in to tell her he can't help? What the hell? It probably would've been better if they'd left him out of it. :(

At least in the JLU world we can pretend it went on forever!

(skip to 2:12 for Huntress parts)

He sounds so hopeful too. Like I don't know what the right answer is but at least I'm trying?

Question was always my favorite part of JLU.

"Please. I go through everyone's trash."

I think my favourite part is him breaking and entering while singing the pop song.

Well, that and "orange socks." XD

If I had the screencaps and the patience my next animated icon would be that moment along with Ollie humming his own theme music in "Initiation" and Bruce humming Frere Jacques in "Only A Dream", with caption saying something like "My fandom sings while it works"

Thanks, I love Helena and Vic. I wonder why he didn't show up in Simone's BoP run more given the relationship she gave them in the "Double Date"? I know she didn't want the book didn't focus on the Birds' relationships but it would have been nice to see him.

It was originally pitched as a Birds of Prey episode, but they couldn't use Babs because The Batman had the character rights locked down. From what I've read it sounds like the replacement cast was suggested to her, but she apparently loved what they'd done with Vic, so it really is a wonder.

I'm going to have to check out this Gotham Knights story. In fact, I've been meaning to check out this series in general, and you've given me another reason. Of course, if the writer did "pluck" the "Helena-is-crazy string," as you put it, well, I don't see anything unfortunate about that at all. Far from it.

The first scan from #39, the one that's just one panel? The rest of the page showed that Helena owns the rest of her building and has tapes of voices playing in the other rooms to make it look like she's not the only person living there. :(
IF you're to that kinda thing, be my guest, but I'm just sayin'.

That's not new; she has the same thing in the Huntress miniseries that came out in 1994. It was there so that anyone who might break into the building would think it full of people, while in reality allowing Helena to have the entire place to herself.

These two are up there with Barda/Scott on my favourite DC pairings. They had so much potential of crazy-awesome-ness, it makes me sad that they really went nowhere with it. Does Helena even know Vic is dead? He would've made a good bird.

I'd like to see them hang out, maybe get some closure on Helena's feelings about Renee wearing Vic's mask, but nothing beyond that, really.
