The real reason superheroes keep sidekicks
Top Ten #12 explains the deal.

This issue also contains a scene folks who are sick and tired of DC's holier-than-thou "killing is always wrong no matter what the circumstances" attitude will appreciate.

Promethea: Goes both ways
Here's an interesting panel layout trick, courtesy of Alan Moore and J.H. Williams III. In this two-spread, the panels can be read either clockwise or counterclockwise, and in either direction they'll make sense as a sequence and conversation.

Get that Zirk OUT OF here!

Zirk appeared in the strip LASER ERASER AND PRESSBUTON in the British magazine WARRIOR (PRESSBUTTON was an interesting series itself and deserves an in-depth look. The psycho cyborg and his assassin partner began in some underground rock music magazines; Steve Moore (writing as "Pedro Henry") created and scripted the characters, and Alan Moore (writing as "Curt Vile" for some reason) used Pressbutton in an epic called "The Stars My Degradation" (hah).

So. Zirk is this alien who really IS alien. Flying around on his mentally controlled platform, he engages though in various unsavory illegal activities like smuggling. Mostly, he's a complete pervert who is aroused by anything with long appendages, paricularly if they wiggle. Human women appeal to him, but he'll also do it with anything from nightsquid to the severed neck of an ostrich. It's not clear what goes on here, since he apparently has no external organs (not even eyes or mouth). Maybe he does everything telepathically, stimulating his victims' pleasure centers. Or maybe he has inverted organs which emerge at the proper time. It's best not to know, but we should notice that Zirk's partners/victims becomes immensely infatuated with him. ("Love 'em and leave 'em," he smirks.)

Mina Murray's new job
Bizarrely, both League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Astro City, books known for their history of lateness and erratic scheduling, managed to come out this week. If the last issue of Planetary had come out too, I think the universe would have sunk into some abyss of improbability.

Two pages from the latest League volume, Century, follow.

What's all this Bojeffries business, then?

Here's a few pages from WARRIOR# 12, August 1983, part of the ongoing Bojeffries Saga by Alan Moore and Steve Parkhouse. (I see the collected stories are available on eBay and not a bad way to use some expendable income.) These remind me of Henry Kuttner's classic Hogben series, which ran in 1940s pulps. Those involved a hillbilly family whose members had a mind-blowing array of unusual traits and powers; because of the print medium, much was left suggested to let the readers' imaginations supply some details. I don't know if Alan Moore ever read the Kuttner stories, and the resemblance is not overwhelming but it would be nice to know if he ever mentioned the influence in any interviews.

Text piece from Tomorrow Stories #1
When America's Best Comics launched, Alan Moore wrote text pieces for the first issues of each title. The text pieces for Promethea, Tom Strong, and Top Ten were reprinted in those books' trade paperback collections. The Tomorrow Stories piece, however, was left out of that book's trades.

Cobweb in the Castle of Tears, by Moore and Gebbie
The first few pages of "Cobweb in the Castle of Tears." With this story, Alan Moore delivered what can only be described as a comic book story unlike any other.

Alan Moore has fun with wordplay (Tomorrow Stories 4)
When writers try to portray the world of the far future, they realize that, realistically, English would likely have undergone some changes by that point. There are several ways to do this. You could simply write normal English, only peppering it with the occasional made-up future slang word or profanity (e.g. nass, shock, gorram, etc.) This serves the added bonus of allowing the characters to curse while keeping the stories age-appropriate. Or you could be Alan Moore and just go all out, producing something much crazier.

When Alan Moore wrote Doctor Who... sort of
Many moons ago (29 years ago to be precise), before he even wrote for 2000AD, an up and coming UK writer wrote for Doctor Who Weekly. Fresh faced and sprightly (Well, actually probably not, but it's a fun mental image) this eager young creator wrote, amongst others, a little trilogy of back up strips detailing some unseen elements of the past of the Doctor's people, the Time Lords of Gallifrey. Even with Maxwell the Magcial Cat under his belt, who knew Alan Moore would go so far! :) The triology also introduced a couple of characters who would go on to bigger, and better, things, but not yet.

Alan Moore's Glory proposal
In the late 90's, Rob Liefeld hired Alan Moore to revamp Liefeld's "Awesome Universe," the superhero universe of such characters as Supreme and Glory. Moore's version of Supreme, which was something of a Superman pastiche/homage, is fairly well-known to fans, and a lot of people have sung its praises. Somewhat less well-known is Alan Moore's proposed revamp of Glory, which would have followed along similar lines, using Wonder Woman instead of Superman as a template. There were some troubles with Liefeld's company around the time it was set to come out, so not much in the way of actual comic book work materialized. However, Liefeld did end up publishing Alan Moore's outline for the revamp, alongside a bunch of other stuff, in a one-shot called "Alan Moore's Awesome Universe Handbook."

It's quite the fascinating read, as Moore shares some thoughts on early Wonder Woman comics and the way mythology tends to be approached in shared universe superhero comics. It's an intriguing peak at what might have been if Liefeld had only run a tighter ship. And it's a testament to Moore's skill as a writer that this mere proposal, by itself, is more interesting, imaginative, and charming, probably even more intelligent, than most superhero comics being published these days. I especially like his description of the Diamond Chariot, the equivalent to Wonder Woman's Invisible Plane that he comes up with. Oh, so many possibilities.

Pseudo-Clark and Pseudo-Lois
This is from an issue of Supreme, the Superman homage/pastiche comic published in the 90's. In the comic, both Supreme in his secret identity and the Lois Lane figure, Diane Duane, work at a comic book company. They're the artist and writer, respectively, on Omniman, a fictional hero who's ALSO a Superman pastiche. So Supreme's a Superman analog who, in his secret ID, writes about a different, fictional Superman analog. Got all that? Not as confusing as it might sound.

As you might expect, it's a set-up that allows for plenty of meta-commentary in the stories. In issue 50, Supreme, in his Ethan Crane identity, has a long talk with Diana about his love life. The two discuss the pitfalls and perils of superhero relationships.

Rorschach’s Journal (On a Boring Night)
Idle chatter. Teeth shining behind false masks of pleasantries. The dim insanity held barely checked behind their eyes. Their every twitch screaming. Screaming for release. Screaming for a cease to this mundane existence, plagued with the disrespect and wasteful edicts of the new Kings. 327 she calls. It is my number. I take my Whopper and leave. The streets are my table. The sins of man are my condiments. Criminals are my napkin. She forgot pickles.

Justice is dead.

The rest is here.

Regarding recent Lj events...
I'm only posting this here due to the fact it involves most if not all of you-

Marvel shuts down Livejournal users
http://www.bigshinyrobot.com/reviews/

Feel free to post any comments on the site it's self.

And hopefully this makes it legal-

Photobucket

But what did he do? Knowing what Rorschach has to day about him it's probably "homosexual" in nature. Not that there's anything wrong with it!

If I've done something against the rules, I apologize as I'm really only here to have more noise made over the whole thing and hopefully resolve it, so things can go back to normal and hilarious!

Thanks.

Didn't know it'd be against the rules on noscans_daily, though since it is I'll just post this here, hopefully not breaking any rules. The company that made the opening sequence for the Watchmen movie has put it(the sequence) up online(spoilers, obviously): http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/article/the-watchmen-opening-credits-are-online
Related scan and possible spoilers under cut )
