Promethea: Goes both ways
Here's an interesting panel layout trick, courtesy of Alan Moore and J.H. Williams III. In this two-spread, the panels can be read either clockwise or counterclockwise, and in either direction they'll make sense as a sequence and conversation.

I've also included the panels both immediately before and after the spread, so you can see what the conversation is coming out of and what it's going into, for proper context.

That's beautiful, artistic, thought-provoking, and confusing as all heck.

(The flow of the conversation, I mean. The Gnostic stuff I understand.)

More kabbalah than gnosticism actually. At least right here. Although they're related of course.

Ah, my bad. I'm not an expert on either and tend to conflate the two.

I think your comment reflects upon the book as a whole. How many issues did it have ?

Thirty-two. One for each of the paths on the kabbalistic Tree of Life. (Collected in 5 volumes.)

Hmm I think I bailed after the tarrot card issue.

One of the cleverest moments in the series and, like the decades-spanning, told-in-reverse Greyshirt story recently posted, a fine example of how Moore loves to play with form.

This is arguably one of my favourite series. There's another wonderful spread (note to self: Buy New Scanner, Dammit!) where the two of them are on a Möbius strip, so the conversation forms another, slightly more complicated, loop.

Yeah, that was neat, too. But this one trumps it, in my opinion, because it can be read both clockwise and counterclockwise and still make sense. The Mobius page one is a loop, but it follows one direction.

Whoa, trippy. Whenever anyone posts something from Promethea, I stare in awe regret giving up on the book way back when it was still being published. Maybe it's time to buy the trades.

You won't regret it. Promethea is the gift to yourself that keeps on giving.
