Get that Zirk OUT OF here!

Zirk appeared in the strip LASER ERASER AND PRESSBUTON in the British magazine WARRIOR (PRESSBUTTON was an interesting series itself and deserves an in-depth look. The psycho cyborg and his assassin partner began in some underground rock music magazines; Steve Moore (writing as "Pedro Henry") created and scripted the characters, and Alan Moore (writing as "Curt Vile" for some reason) used Pressbutton in an epic called "The Stars My Degradation" (hah).

So. Zirk is this alien who really IS alien. Flying around on his mentally controlled platform, he engages though in various unsavory illegal activities like smuggling. Mostly, he's a complete pervert who is aroused by anything with long appendages, paricularly if they wiggle. Human women appeal to him, but he'll also do it with anything from nightsquid to the severed neck of an ostrich. It's not clear what goes on here, since he apparently has no external organs (not even eyes or mouth). Maybe he does everything telepathically, stimulating his victims' pleasure centers. Or maybe he has inverted organs which emerge at the proper time. It's best not to know, but we should notice that Zirk's partners/victims becomes immensely infatuated with him. ("Love 'em and leave 'em," he smirks.)

God I remember reading these as a teenager and giggling hysterically. You used to be able to buy a badge with his tagline, "He knows what he likes, and what he likes WRIGGLES" on it.

He wants our women!
(but he's not picky.)

Ah, Zirk. I always got the feeling that he just sort of slimed his paramours. (There was a strip where someone tried to trap him and ended up getting the tables turned on her, and a later strip showed her compulsively reliving the experience, with several nozzles spraying this mucusy goo all over her. Laser Eraser and Pressbutton, folks--not your high-minded end of the sci-fi spectrum.)

Maybe his secretions had some sort of high-powered endorphins in them, it was all rather vague.

Yeah, the strip has that negative vibe to it. "The whole universe is a dump, Axel," as Mysta says.. not much sense of exhiliration there.

MORE OF THAT BOLLAND STORY! I mean, jeez, it should have been okay--that thing's been reprinted at least thrice I know of. And it is the QUINTESSENTIAL Zirk story.

Also an example of why Bolland makes almost all other "realistic" cartoonists look stiff, humorless and unskilled. Looky! All quite realistic, no real exaggeration, and STILL he brings out the humor and cartooniness of it. Not to mention his women are alive and sexy as hell. Screw you, Greg Land.
