Batman #412: Enemy Mime
[info]cat_13145 wanted to see Batman #412, which features Jason grinning, rock, a mime, and the obligatory bad puns.

It's the last time Collins wrote Jason on Batman, and I was going to focus again on Jason's characterization, but I'm a sucker for how the design of the mime. The art, which is by Cockrum, has a very clean, dynamic look, so I ended up doing a lot more 'general story' than a Jason post.

Batman #413: Jason smiles.
Someone was asking for interaction between Jason and Alfred pre-death, so it reminded me that I was going to make a post on Jason in Batman #413.

Women in Dumpsters: Batman and Jason as Robin
Batman #414, #421, #422; 7 scans from each issue, plus the cover.

These three issues form a bigger story arc. The basic plot is such: there's been a series of killings of young women in Gotham, and Batman is searching the murderer. There are a few headdesky plot points, but don't let that drive you away: it's a very good story. #422 especially is wonderfully constructed, but the rest is nonetheless interesting on its own.

I'm posting it because it's an arc than ran during Jason's period as Robin, and though Jason only appears in #422, the story deals with some themes that are inherently linked to his character. Emotional involvement, anger issues, the difference between what is “just” and what is legal, attitude toward women-as-victims, all of which are expanded upon. My comments regarding how the action relates to Jason's character are in italics.

Batman #422 is Jason's last appearance before Garzonas, in Batman #424.

When Cass was like Jason
4 scans from Batgirl #07.
writer: Kelley Puckett, penciller: Damion Scott

Being to compared to Jason Todd, in the Batman mythos, is a Bad Thing. According to the orthodox editorial meta, being like Jason means being angry, badly trained, and reckless. Jason Todd is widely depicted as the Bad Robin - first he died, and now he's back, meta wants to make him "irredeemable".

It's generally admitted that Steph was like Jason. (Even Robins represent.)

Before that, there was the time *Cass* was like Jason. )

The Delusions of Alfred Pennyworth - because everything needs more Alfred.
From Gotham Knights #34, this is one of my favourite B&W sections, so I thought I'd repost a few pages of it. I'm actually pretty fond of the art here and it's a lovely little moment for Alfred, in my opinion.

The History of Jason Todd (Part 5) -- Death & The Return

So... a death and a resurrection? Damn, I should have posted this on Easter!

Here are the links to the previous "History of Jason Todd" posts:

Part 4: http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/183159.html
Part 3: http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/182791.html
Part 2: http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/178502.html
Part 1: http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/146730.html

And I know we all hate Jason right now for what's going on in Battle for the Cowl but... well, it's understandable that the kid has violence-against-family issues. As we see here...

The History of Jason Todd (Part 4) -- Oh the Times They Are A'Changin!

Here is where all that signature Jason violence comes into play. While many of us seem to agree that modern depictions of Jason make him harsher than the 80s, there IS precident for the "OMG, JASON TODD IS CRAZY DANGEROUS!" theme. Here are the top violent/controversial Jason moments...

The History of Jason Todd (Part 3) -- Teen Titans Go!
Okay, so we know that Jason started his time as Robin as a bit of a brat. But his character evolved a BIT differently in other comics. For example, while Jason in Batman was rude, scowling, kind of a know-it-all, and increasingly violent... in the short time he was on the Teen Titans he wasn't so bad at all! (Donna Troy though? She comes off pretty poorly...)

The History of Jason Todd (Part 2) -- Starting in Short-Pants
So here is the long delayed (sorry, computer problems!) Part 2 of my look at post-Crisis Jason Todd (i.e. the second Second Robin). Part 1 can be found here, and thanks to icon_uk who has posted two great posts looking at the first, pre-Crisis version of Jason Todd.

When we last left Jason, he had just "aquired" the Robin suit (in 3 different ways). So now let's see how he uses it...

The original origin of the original non-original Robin Pt 2
Following on from part one of this story...

Okay, quick recap - New villain Killer Croc is making his move on the Gotham underworld, and Joker has brought together an alliance of badguys to take him down, preferably after he's gained power, so Joker can slip in and take over himself with minimal effort on his part.

Batman asked a couple of civilians, circus aerialists Joe and Trina Todd, for help in stopping Killer Croc, and they met a grisly end when they investigated too far. Robin and Batgirl know this, and Robin has gone nuts as the Todd's were personal friends.

The original origin of the original non-original Robin

Again from the archives, the start of a posting series I never got around to finishing, I hope this encourages me to keep going! :)

This is essentially, the introduction of Jason Todd to the Batverse, showcasing his introduction to the world of Robin-ness, reveal how pre- Crisis Batman handled so many things differently from his Post-Crisis, Frank Miller self, and also highlight the gorgeous, rich artwork of the late, great Don Newton (inked by Alfredo Alcala), one of the most under-appreciated Batman artists ever IMHO.

Next time; Jason 1.0's baptism of fire... and Croc and Joker's schemes come to fruition... or not...

Same Robin-time (kinda), same Robin channel..

The History of Jason Todd: Origins (Part 1)
So, with The Old Place gone, so went with it my History of Jason Todd. Well, after much debating I decided to repost it, with up-to-date info.

I still feel that Jason is one of the most polarizing characters in the DCU, from his shift from pre to post-Crisis, his 900 number death, and his return and (mis)use in Countdown... you either love him, hate him, or don't see what the fuss is about.

So, here is Part 1 of my "History of Jason Todd series," giving a quick pre-Crisis background and the post-Crisis origin.

Jason Todd in "Batman/Demon"
For those interested, I've recently published a zine, Boy and Girl Wonders: Robin in Cultural Context. Any earnings made by me from this are being donated to charities which help children in crisis. If you've ever been interested to know what existing myths were tapped into by Robin's creation, or how later media has been shaped by Robin's impact, this'll be just your cup of tea.

Speaking of Robins, here's a scene from the one-shot story "Batman/Demon", in which Batman has to venture into hell for something or other, and meets a familiar face on the way.
