The original origin of the original non-original Robin Pt 2
Following on from part one of this story...

Okay, quick recap - New villain Killer Croc is making his move on the Gotham underworld, and Joker has brought together an alliance of badguys to take him down, preferably after he's gained power, so Joker can slip in and take over himself with minimal effort on his part.

Batman asked a couple of civilians, circus aerialists Joe and Trina Todd, for help in stopping Killer Croc, and they met a grisly end when they investigated too far. Robin and Batgirl know this, and Robin has gone nuts as the Todd's were personal friends.

The Todd's son Jason is unaware of their fate, but has found the Batcave, and cobbled together a Robin costume for fun, then stowed away in the Batmobile for an adventure. And now....

Robin and Batgirl are tracing a lead of their own… Clearly we have a somewhat myopic villain here, as it takes a lot to confuse Batman and Batgirl back in those days. And, oh, I've said it before, I'll say it again; Don Newton, how we miss you. Cute gals, sexy thighs guys, and dynamic posing.

See, it IS possible to look menacing when wearing pixie boots. Just threaten to drop someone off a tall building and you’ll be amazed at how much eccentric clothing choices enhance your apparent unpredictability.

Again some neat cape-drape on Dick and Babs here.

Next stop for the Men’s Club that Croc has been using as a base, and an excuse for a beautifully dynamic action sequence, as Robin loses his cool completely, which does not bode well for anyone picking a fight with him.

Rather a lot of scans of Robin and Batgirl kicking butt and taking names, and I make no apology for them. They look AWESOME!

So now the Dynamite Duo (Yes, the team of Robin and Batgirl had their own nickname back then) know that it’s all going down at the Adams Brewery… (I’m sure that Dick is probably secretly wondering if, once they stop the bad guys he can sneak a couple of kegs out for his next party at Hudson U!)

Jason meanwhile has emerged from the Batmobile to find that everyone has already gone off to… do stuff. So he decides to have a look around on his own. Fourth panel is a little bit of a woobie inducing moment, since his Dad is currently occupying bits of a slab down at the morgue and he doesn’t know.

And then, as so often happens in such cases, he notices some supervillains showing up, and rather than thinking “Oh crap, supervillains! HIDE!” realises that they must be preparing to sneak up on Batman, tries to work out a less obvious way into the brewery. Give him credit for the gutsy move of trying, bless ‘im.

These panels highlight why I still argue that a smart acrobat is going to be way ahead of any other kind of person on the Robin-learning-curve. Love his little backflip on the ledge there.

Meanwhile, Batman, Catwoman and Talia have been caught by Croc. The ladies are tied to the outside of a brewing vat that’s set to explode with blistering hot steam.

Croc decides that he has to prove that he is stronger than Batman in a “fair” wrestling fight, and rather than leave Batman to parboil too, decides to challenge him to a bit of alpha male supremacy testing. If Batman can win at hand to hand, he and the ladies go free, if he loses, well, that’ll be a moot point. If he can’t defeat Croc in time, the ladies go boom anyway. Methinks he planned to cheat.

Jason shows that he is a smart little cookie… though perhaps worryingly familiar with how a brewery works for a kid his age.. but let’s not argue with results! He manages this without being seen by anyone (Well, there’s a lot of billowing steam, and people in Gotham seem to not find kids in red, green and gold that noticeable)

The Joker realises that things aren’t going too well, so gets ready to make a quick exit, only to find that Robin and Batgirl have already arrived and are blocking his exit, having already taken care of Two Face, Killer Moth and Clayface II. Nowadays that would be a six part crossover in and of itself, but in those days, we could take it as read that good WOULD triumph because good can kick ass and take names.

Backing away from the terrifying sight of a redhead in a cowl and a seriously sexy bare legged guy, the Joker meets a suitably ironic fate of being hit by a swing from Croc after Batman ducks.

And then, with no one even aware he’s in the room Jason hears Killer Croc drop the bombshell about his parents and he understandably goes a little nuts.

I like the way they manage to give him a means to hurt Croc without punching him, which would have been a little implausible. Causing him to drop the massive metal pipe he was swinging on himself is a much more reasonable approach.

And Batman sees the similarities between Jason’s pain and his own and Dick’s. I wonder where he sees this ending?

Luckily a combination of the falling pipe, plus Batman’s rather smart uppercut, means that Croc is out like a light (as is the Joker) before Jason lets slip that the Todd’s were his parents, though you can forgive him losing his composure.

Dick giving Jason a reassuring hug as he apologises is nice, without being creepy, and if anyone wants to read anything into the last panel where Jason melts into Dick’s arms, probably sobbing heavily, well that’s up to you. Personally, I think it’s rather moving and not at all slashy (And I can read slash into almost anything)

Some time later, after returning to Wayne Manor and seeing Talia and Selina off the premises. Dick want's a chat, and Bruce knows what it will be about...

Remember that the clown in full makeup is NOT a tasteless notion from Alfred to try and amuse the depressed Jason, he’s Waldo the Clown, an old friend of both the Grayson and Todd families (I’ll post Dick and Waldo’s first reunion sometime)

I like that Dick wants to adopt Jason though I couldn’t imagine it happening easily, since Dick is still legally a ward of court himself (that expires are at 21, not 18 IIRC).

But Bruce, past master at shouldering guilt, takes responsibility and a new cycle begins.

Say what you like, I love this final image Next up, Jason’s first foray’s into hero-dom, the problem of the hair, his first bondage experience and the only Dick to Jason handover of the mantle of Robin worthy of the honour.

D'awww.

I always think this era Dick looks kinda not right. I like how they've aged him, but it really is getting to the point where that costume is creepy on him, rather than cute.

I love that last hug too; and actually this whole thing is very sweet and very sad, especially knowing what's going to happen to Jason eventually.

I would have SO loved to see Don Newton draw Dick in the Discowing costume at least once... Alas, twas never to be.

I actually find it creepier when he's younger. As an older teen/young adult, he's tougher and less vulnerable, somewhat the opposite when he's younger.

It's the exposed legs that get me. They really are man legs. Dude, time to move out of short shorts and into your disco number.

See, I'm a-okay with the man legs. I suppose some might find it kind of youthful or effeminate to have that exposed skin, and while I don't think there's anything wrong with those qualities, I don't think it's exactly true in this case. Granted, superhero tights highlight muscles just as well, but it shows off his strong muscular legs, and he doesn't look weak or dainty by any stretch.

But maybe that's it, the costume is somehow suggestive of someone who's younger or weaker, so it's seen as somewhat clashing with the person wearing it. (Which IMO makes it all the more fun and interesting, and probably works in Robin's favour sometimes.)

Then again, when the character and costume were first introduced, apparently children were just shorter versions of adult bodybuilders. (Although that's entirely possible, considering the Superbaby that was born in Germany some time back, who was born with some mutation that gave him HUGE FUCKING GUNS.)

Yeah. I'm not sure at what point they first introduced Robin, but I believe it was only until the late 40s that the concept of a "teenager" (or at least teen culture) really came about.

That's what I was picturing. Giant baby from Germany toting guns, and I was like, Superbaby (as in, Superman when he was a baby) didn't play with guns! I don't understand!

I'm very happy with the manly legs, and prefer them. But I do not know how DC didn't notice. (Although my guess is that it had something to do with franchise kind of issues.) Stupid Sexy Robin. You'd think they'd have noticed. How long between this and Nightwing, one has to wonder.

Haha - I doubt it's intentional, but the white spot in that last panel is positioned right on Bruce's upper row of teeth, looking like they're sparkling with finality.

Very nice indeed. And I like that Dick wants to adopt Jason. It's very sweet and shows his caring and generosity (same can be said for Bruce, as well).

It's also nice to see the bat-crew working together so well.

I love the moment where the guy thinks Batgirl and Robin are BatMAN and Robin. Just do. Know it's myopic of him, but do. Love her costume being almost Batman's. Love Jason's costume, too. He looks great in his close-ups, by the way.

Also. I was reading some comic lately, that came relatively closely before this one. So it was interesting for me to note a change. In the story before, Dick admitted that he couldn't threaten a guy. And get Batman's results. Here, he can. It's interesting to see what brought that about, both the need and the execution. Nice work, Dick. Also, Character Continuity? I love you.

The art, of course, is gorgeous.

PS: Icon, the thing ate my comments. If you get something anonymous? (Maybe I didn't sign in, but I thought I did) That's almost the same as this? Surprise! It was me.

I doubt Bruce foresees this entire universe being wiped out of existence in a few years. Which makes the problems of three little people seem like a hill of beans.

Which is all my way of saying that I don't think this Jason Todd will be murdered by the Joker, resurrected, and kept around for editors and writers to try different plots on until they get bored. That's the next Jason Todd.

This Jason Todd has naturally red hair, parents in the circus, no history of living on the street, and no attitude problems. He's no more the post-Crisis Jason Todd than Earth-2 Huntress is Helena Bertinelli.

Thank you for posting. I look forward to further installments.

Just threaten to drop someone off a tall building and you’ll be amazed at how much eccentric clothing choices enhance your apparent unpredictability.

Words of wisdom!

I am also with you on the melting into Dick's arms. They just seem like healthy people. Actually, looking at it now makes me think of Tim after he and Dick fight at the Lazarus Pit. Only in this situation Jason is a kid and Dick is an older boy and friend who's just being a good guy.

::sigh:: They're all so responsible and not self-destructive or hurtful to each other.

It's weird in the way it seems like the biggest difference between then and now is somebody said, like Christian Bale in Batman Begins, "A guy who dresses up as a bat and fights crime...as issues." And from there also came the "It's immoral to bring children into it" which sometimes to be really a cover for "Good father's aren't bad ass enough!" which led to Batman being a bad father or excuses for why Robin makes it "unrealistic."

Also, while I still just can't get past the whole "He's a trapeze artist just like you!" origin, I really like the fact that a trapeze artist gives him the skills to be Robin. It bugs me the way now they take so many (male) characters and act like three people with totally different backgrounds and years of study can be at basically the same level of acrobat/ninja.

I guess all the similarities to his own origin story reminded Dick of the "talk, or I throw you to your death" interrogation technique, though this isn't as cold-blooded as the way it was used then, where the unspoken second part of the technique was "but if you do talk, I'll just put you in position for someone else to throw you to your death so we can take pictures of it."
