While Death in his corporeal form walked the streets of Los Angeles, he was still everywhere, with every unsaved victim of the night's terrors, with every terminal patient in hospitals, with every last breath taken in Los Angeles and everywhere else.

Lately, he had been even busier, but such was the way of things.

He was there when the first animals suffered and died in polluted waters. White's work always came with a rainbow of colors. Death was a collector of human souls, but the death of all things was his domain, and so he was there before the first human life was ended after that act. And the ending of human lives did come, as he was there with the first children that fell ill from playing in the ocean where they weren't supposed to be. The biological systems of the young were so fragile, one push toward illness and then a host of others followed – allergic reactions, infections, pneumonia – until all four were no longer among the land of the living.

He was there when the gunfire halted and the air cleared, every last soul collected. Red had done her job well, and the effects of that spread out, touching the city strand by violence-rousing strand. Crimes increased, and with them, the deaths of victim and criminal alike.

There was a purpose and symmetry to all deaths, everywhere, including the newest ones in Los Angeles. The act of dying simply was, it held no bias, no concept of good or evil, and thus neither did Death. The end was coming because all had known it would. Even the last end times had just been another test. It was the plan. It would always be ineffable.

He was there when the director of the LA County Department of Public Health breathed his last breath. Dr Raven Sable would fill the position and with that, spread the means to more ends. Humanity would always do the real work, this was only acceleration. He was there on the street when the first homeless man starved to death in his cardboard box, and there as each one after succumbed. He kept track of those marked to soon die, and those who would fight, but could not escape their fate after a brush with Black.

And he would be there when the next wave, increased proportionally in preparation for the end of all things, raised the body count. The newly departed did question it at times, and Death's answer was often the same for those souls most recently collected. Death was not above repeating himself, as he had no need for ingenuity.

DON'T THINK OF IT AS DYING, he told them all, JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH.
