It had been easy enough to get the job. One worker had fallen ill from food poisoning just before the ship was set to leave. Lo and behold, shipmate C. White stepped in, with a decent resume, and prior experience. A dirty bandana was wrapped around his head, to cover the circlet of metal he wore. Since crew was needed, no one questioned too deeply about what that 'prior experience' had been.
The ship was barely out of port when the alarms went up. The damage was immediate, uncontrollable. Twenty thousand gallons of oil and sludge and chemical waste was released from the ship.
Beaches were evacuated and closed within hours. No one could explain why the ship had released all that product into the ocean. The Captain and first mate were detained for questioning.
And everyone forgot about shipmate C. White, who went home with a smile, fingering the crown in delight.
