REFERENDUM

Four polling places have been set up at Hogsmeade (the largest), Portree, Montrose, and Banchory (the smallest). Voters can cast their ballot at any polling station but the poll books are connected so that signing in at one station marks the voter as voted at the other stations.

Each voter receives a ballot with the following question:
Shall the Minister for Magic appoint a Minister for Scottish Affairs as a Member of the Wizengamot and form a department for Scottish Affairs?
The options are to vote AYE or NAY.

Just as the voting booths are screened from sight and scrying, the comments to this post are screened.

Another King once said: "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

Please take this as a public service announcement to remind all eligible Scottish citizens to vote today. This referendum is about representation, and to that point voter turnout matters.

For anyone not familiar with non-magical history or American history, the King referenced is Martin Luther King Jr. The short version of his story is as follows. King was an American Baptist minister and leading activist in the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s & 60s. The aim of the civil rights movement was to end legalized racial segregation and discrimination laws in the United States. King believed in tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience based. He was a phenomenal public speaker and a great man. Today is also his birthday.

[UPLIFT SUPPORTERS]

If you can see this message and was not expecting it, I say welcome to movement, or at least welcome to learning more about a growing neon pink movement. If you wish to be removed from the list please let me know and I'll do that. Or if anyone else should be added, I certainly do wish to expand the network.

In the spirit of full disclosure here is a list of everyone on this ward's registry -- [attached]. But now to to the meat of things.

It has been exciting to see more and more people wearing pink at quidditch matches and elsewhere in the community, but it is time we capitalize on this momentum and take the next step.

Since the new year, I have been in small meetings work to work on paperwork to establish a CIO. We need a formalized statement of purpose as well as somewhat unrestricted access to funds. In trying to enact long term change, we will need to be able to retain legal counsel, public relations, and eventually be able to provide salary for those actively working to maintain the CIO and achieve our goals.

As of right now I have been using the name "The Uplift Foundation." However, as nothing has been filed I am open to other options.

To paraphrase the document, The Uplift Foundation aims to create an equal playing field and sustain a vital, prosperous community where justice and opportunity are extended to everyone.

Some of the long term goals are identified to:
• Promote harmony between different sections of the community
• Provide education and training for children and adults
• Serve as a support network for young people coming from non-magical background
• Serve as a civic hub and center of information, where ideas are shared, levers for change are identified, and common agendas for the future are developed

More specifically:
• Revision of the Muggle Studies curriculum taught at Hogwarts working with both the school and the Wizarding Examinations Authority
• Internships in the non-magic world for advanced muggle studies students and other interested students

What I am seeking now are people to sit as trustees or even those who might in the future be able to serve more prominent roles and particularly those are more politically inclined.

Who: Meaghan McCormack and Melchior Yaxley
What: We Need To Talk
When: 15 January 2000, late afternoon
Where: Paisley, Scotland
Warnings: None, perhaps shockingly. I'm not even sure they said anything naughty.

Was it just her, or was this conversation already starting to sound like one she didn't wanna have? )

I hope everyone got in their votes today. I've made no secret of my opinion on the matter, but I appreciate the healthy debate offered by those on the opposite side of things, and even those who have been undecided (though hopefully that changed today!).

Regardless of the outcome, I hope you'll all raise a glass with me tonight—to Scotland!

So apparently things happen in Banchory other than being surrounded by too many salmon. Like voting for example. Not that I'm telling anyone how to vote, only that you should. Anyway, not the point of this.

I was voting in Banchory when a bloke came up to me, noting the pink scarf and told me I was doing nothing but stirring up trouble where there was none and that I should just go back to playing Quidditch as that was my job. He walked off before i could point out that I wasn't actually a professional player and even if that was, that doesn't preclude my right to free speech.
