TRAINING Day 1

Who: All Specimens who want to
When: September 4th / Day 1, 10 am - 7 pm
Where: Training Facility
Status: IC/OOC

The Wittgenstein Survival Training Center is staffed by experts in their fields to help specimens gain familiarity and competence in a variety of survival and scenario-related skills. Here they can brush up on old skills, learn and practice new ones, and work together, alone, or with instructors. Open between 10 am and 7 pm each day, specimens can come and go as they please.

Weaponry training utilizes safety weapons and enforces a strict no contact policy. Though first aid skills may include partner work, and specimens are encouraged to help each other out if they are inclined to do so, just be careful of roughhousing. Survival skills tend to have staff on hand to ask and answer questions, but are more likely to leave specimens to their own devices otherwise. At exercise related stations, staff can function as spotters, belayers, lifeguards, or explain how to use devices.

Additionally, Lunch is offered in this center, with a variety of daily, gourmet offerings, and a fresh juice bar though only for those who have been participating in that day's training. Have fun!

"Would you believe it's a lot of poorly calibrated one night stands in the middle of places like Southern Bougainville in Papua New Guinea?"

"Not when you start the question with 'would you believe'. I found whatever is said is generally not the real reason when people start off with that."

"Novels? Poetry? I'm going to wager a guess that this is more like a strange case than anything involving piracy."

"It has on occasion involved space piracy! Which - Treasure Planet was a visually stunning film. But more to the point, I can turn into a giant rage monster. Sometimes. On occasion. I don't really like to. Really ruins my pants."

"And suddenly the running around naked in the wilderness makes more sense." Not really but she's got to say something while her brain processes this information and saying she can be a giant rage monster before her morning coffee is probably not the way to go.

"I'd wager that is also ruins a good deal of your plans."

"Over the years? A few." Marriage plans, marriages, business partnerships, and he's probably the reason that two SHIELD helicarriers have 'new' skylights, but he has tried his best in recent years not to get too bogged down by it. What he is is what he is and what he has done -- all the good and all the bad -- he can't change. "A couple. It was a radiation accident that started it. I was - well. I was contracted to build a bomb I didn't want to build."

"I might not know you that well, Bruce, but I can't help but see you putting up a fight over building a bomb you don't want to build. I also know the lengths the government will go to get what it wants." Life as an army brat taught her that lesson a little too well.

"How does he manifest? Heightened emotions of some kind? Anger?" It would make sense considering he'd said 'rage monster'. Didn't really coincide with extreme happiness being the trigger."

"It's a... response to pain. Adrenaline, I guess?" Bruce didn't guess. He studied his own body down to the molecules to be certain of what it was that brought on the Hulk. He didn't tend to open up to people quickly like this, but there was something about being stranded in the middle of a crazy experiment that made everyone seem a little more trustworthy. "The same way that anger is, or fear could be. My flight or flight instinct is just very purposeful and very violent, but I'm a lot better at controlling it than I used to be."

And he hadn't had access to his powers in London. Or locking up Kobik might have gone very differently for the entire hotel.

It made her think of the creature that Lex has set upon the city. Of Clark--not the one there, but her Clark, stirring emotions she wasn't ready to try and deal with. Especially not out in the open as they were. Instead she tried to focus on questions to ask, to learn more, but...

"We don't have to talk about this if you don't want. My curiosity does not have to be satiated."

What Lois said was followed by a very distinct pause on Bruce's part, and he chewed on the inside corner of his lip for a moment before shaking his head softly. "I don't mind talking about what I am, or how it happened. I know it sounds messed up and a little hard to believe. But it's -- you'd be surprised what you can learn to live with."

The only aspect of this that Bruce wouldn't willingly talk about was the why. Why he was so hurt, or so angry. Only Tony Stark and Jennifer knew the full story, if they remembered all the fits and starts, the bits and pieces of Bruce's broken childhood that he'd occasionally hold up for someone he loved to see. It was a bit like a cat, Bruce thought, holding up a dead mouse and wanting the people who cared about him to understand that it was a sign of trust and appreciation. But his past was still a horrible dead thing that no one wanted in their house. Bruce included.

"But we could also talk a little bit more about you."

She was silent for a good long moment. For all that Lois could write about other people, effortlessly capture their joy and pain with an exact number of words to allow the Planet's readers a glimpse into someone else's lives, talking about herself was another matter entirely. She hadn't risen as fast as she did in investigative journalism by wearing her heart on her sleeve. But Bruce had shared with her, pieces of himself that were no doubt painful to admit and she could do the same.

It would have been easy to list off some hobbies, perhaps a favorite movie or recount a funny childhood exploit, but none of those quite measured up.

"I buried my fiance before arriving here. Not even my fiance. He hadn't proposed yet but his mother gave me the ring he'd had shipped to his family home when I went for his funeral. He was going to but [...] I was standing at his grave, dropping more dirt onto it before I wound up at the circus."

I'm sorry just never seemed to cut it when it came to hearing something like this. Hell, the word sorry was a broken, hollow word that only meant loss of some kind, anyway. People said they were sorry when something was gone, like a person, or trust or comfort. Bruce knew that because he'd heard it so many times. I'm sorry about your mother, your father, your wife -- but the people who he lost weren't the first thing that jumped to his mind. Instead, all he could think of were Tony's words when he told Bruce he was sorry he couldn't save him. Tony said he was sorry that he'd let him die.

For Bruce, until that moment, sorry had always been such a meaningless vessel of a word. It meant everything or nothing based on the slightest inflection. But it was different, somehow, when Tony had said it.

"That's... terrible that you had to go through that." Bruce hung his head. He had a feeling that Lois wasn't someone who'd want platitudes or empty comfort. She didn't want sorry. "I mean that for both you and his family. Is it -- is there someone here you can talk to about what happened? About him? I just mean, I'll certainly listen, but I might not be your first choice. And... And you should talk about this. Until what you remember immediately when you think of him is a better moment you had together."

It was refreshing almost to not hearing the usual words that people so easily threw at her. Lois was aware they were filler, something that needed to be said to fill up the space that dragged between her and most people she admitted the truth of her life to. No one ever meant any offense when they uttered them, but they rarely helped, a hollow gesture that hung in the air, not making either party truly feel any better.

"I have someone I can reach out to." Though Lois tried not to do so unless it had grown too much to bear. She didn't want to overburden Diana with her chaos of sorrow, even if the woman seemed to understand the depth of her loss. She would rather focus on a task though. Maybe she could move onto writing about all of it soon, spill her emotions onto the paper she'd arrived with and find some solace in the words she hoped would encapsulate everything about her Clark. "I need to remember to find time to actually reach out during these 'downtimes'."
