Who: Sigrun and Dominic
When: Nighttime
Where: Sigrun's penthouse

Sigrun and Dominic possibly had really shitty timing. They’d spent the day before the snow had started freerunning, and once they’d both been sufficiently tired out they stopped for food. Dom had been driving Sigrun home when it started to get really bad, and they’d barely made it to Sigrun’s apartment. From that point on Dom had no choice but to head in with her to wait out the storm. That had been at least three hours and nearly an entire bottle of wine ago.

The pair sat on Sigrun’s couch watching a film on TV, all the while the emergency maelstorm warning flashing and scrolling at the bottom of the screen. Siggy had an entertainment set-up most people could hardly dream of, but that stupid little brightly colored warning at the bottom was making it difficult to really get properly immersed in a good and bloody historical war epic -- even after a couple glasses of good wine. “I think we get the point,” he sighed, kicking his feet up on the coffee table and utterly mindless to the fact that Sigrun might take exception. As if on cue the power died.

TIME UPDATE

Sunday, January 22nd, 2215

Weather: See events.

Events: The storm stops abruptly at about 5 AM. Literally, at one moment the storm is still in full force, and the next it just stops. Strangely, the clouds above the city are still rumbling, and there is a bit of lightning for about twenty minutes. Then things are perfectly calm. Through the rest of the day the clouds clear out, and things are surprisingly sunny. Which doesn’t help anything considering the amount of ice that’s covered Haven.

The city’s a mess. Broken windows, ice and glass everywhere, downed power lines, collapsed trees… oh, right, and an additional three feet of fresh, icy snow on top of all of it.

The trams aren’t functioning today. There has simply been too much damage to the roads and lines that the Council deems it wisest to cancel all public transformation during the clean-up. Private cars are sent to fetch the workers needed for clearing out the roads and doing what repairs are deemed necessary. Restoring power is a pretty major issue, as many different areas have been hit with outages. As always, the wealthier districts are a first priority.

Buuuut… there’s a problem. A very big problem. With wings.

They’re called the furies. A massive species of eagle initially mutated from the harpy eagle. Before animal species mutated, the harpy eagle was the largest and most powerful raptor in the animal kingdom. Furies are practically twice their size, coming in around 32-40 lbs, with a nearly nine foot wingspan. Their talons are anywhere from 8 to 11 inches long, and their beaks are razor sharp. They are pure black, with a silvery sheen to their plumage. And they’re fast.

Here’s the deal. Furies typically don’t go anywhere near Haven, but the military does have some limited experience with them in the wild. The best guess the experts can offer is that the several giant flocks of them terrorizing Haven starting at about 8 in the morning is that it’s something to do with the maelstorm. Basically, the storm and electrical activity that followed acted as a sort of beacon to them. Messed with their migratory patterns.

Furies are predators, and they eat whatever kind of meat they can get their talons on. In the wild they’re known to take down anything from deer to wolves with absolutely no problem. All day today they’ll be swooping down on anything they view as potential prey. The military is called to duty to round them up, and citizens are urged to go out at their own risk - and definitely keep any animals or small children inside.

It’s worth noting that they’re attracted to the color red, and the scent of blood. Have fun with that.

Power is ONLY restored to the upper class districts today. The furies make it too difficult and dangerous for the workmen to restore any more than that.
