The bus schedule was one thing, the actual bus was another. It was running an hour late, probably because it was rare that anyone was in Repose to catch it, and nobody had any reason to hurry, including Janus, who was sitting behind the counter with a plastic bottle of Coca-Cola and Candy Crush on his phone. The game was congratulating him as he shifted from hip to hip on his chair, He was in jeans, a seasonal down-filled coat the color of overripe blueberries, and (his favorite part of the ensemble) a vintage hat that succeeded in making him look like the most innocuous, trustworthy sort of bus employee you could imagine.

The station had overhead speakers from a decade past, and they were playing a local radio station from the county over, country tunes with tinny bridges and twangy voices. He was humming along to one of them when the door opened, breaking his focused intent to match green gummy bears with blue gummy bears.

"You're either really early or really late," he said, not unkindly.
