When: recently!
Where: Temp's house in the neighborhood
What: good old fashioned drinking
Warnings: tba!
The church had temporarily put him up in a small room near the priest's quarters. It was a single bed, dresser, a tiny fridge and a lamp with barely enough room to stand up and walk around. He lived off of oatmeal, sandwiches and the generous cooking of curious church goers who wanted to meet the tall, mysterious man from Italy. This was how he preferred to live, despite (and maybe especially) many Inquisitors enjoying elegant lifestyles wherever they went. It wasn't just them, the church was full of holy men who wanted to fill their private homes with priceless art they barely looked at and luxuries fit for kings. The Catholic Church had always been this way and it didn't bother Carver as much as other devoutly faithful. There would always be corruption with power and he believed it didn't need to define the majority of the religion. After all, when he heard the voices of saints in his head, what choice did he have but to follow the path chosen for him?
Despite accepting a life lived in modesty, he was glad to get out for the night after a week or two of simply serving the church in every way he could. The stories Temperance told him of a Bellatora being forced into a life of killing and politics made him ashamed of the unsteady rock his religion was built on. He didn't even want to look at the holy things he was surrounded by. Walking past the church to his car, he heard a voice whisper look up and he obeyed without thinking. Carver stopped and stared at the familiar stained glass window above him that flickered from amber candlelight inside. Candles lit by people who had seen things they wished they hadn't in the strange purple mist and only had the church and God to turn to. There was good, there was comfort, but did it outweigh the corruption? How could he know?
Carver decided it was something to mull over tomorrow. For now, the goal was to get drunk and meet Temperance, who was more than he could expect. The stories told about her from other Inquisitors, men and women alike, tended to all go the same way. She gives too much sympathy to sinners, she allows evil to walk along side her. She's selfish, lost and thinks she's better than the church. Carver had thought they sent him because he was generally no nonsense about...everything...but he had taken to Temperance immediately. Even after a brief conversation over the forums. He wanted to meet her, get drunk and anything following that would be even better.
After driving to her house, he got out of the car with a couple bottles of wine and a white box with a gift inside from some good-hearted sisters. The nuns were among the few who had taught him the ways of the Inquisition and they nearly jumped out of their shoes when he told them of his assignment; insisting on making her something special. Carver thought, at least in a small sense, it could help Temperance know there was still good in the church. A soft comfort along the edges of corruption.
Carver knocked and when she opened the door she'd find a tall, muscular and serious minded man. He was obviously awkwardly built in his youth and it had taken 30 years for him to comfortably grow into his own body. He had the heart of a Templar, but he didn't look the part. Dark hair, serious eyes and an angular face made him seem more like someone who would be cast as a man who enjoyed corruption and greed.
