With Lois gone, I'm taking over the welcoming committee stuff. We could use a few more people, if anyone's interested, since we lost a few other people. It'd be good to have three people on each team and maybe some alternates.

	No. He's not. Which means you no longer have him as an excuse. Everything you did from his death forward is entirely on you. Don't even pretend like it's not. Unconscious but stable. Saying 'I take responsibility for my actions' means absolutely nothing when you continue to perpetrate those exact same type of actions, Ward. Recognizing where you're responsible and being willing to change your patterns are two very different things.

Kidnapping someone and forcing her into a situation against her will is no way to keep a promise! Dear God. How is that not obvious in your mind?

	Don't give me that. You're doing what you want to. There was absolutely nothing forcing your hand in any of the decisions that you made after you escaped. When we pulled her out of her van, she was a security threat. And we weren't dragging her into a den full of hostile terrorists bent on world domination, either! Want to? You think I wanted to go back in there? Have you ever actually spoken to her Dad? I mean without threats. Guy's ten kinds of crazy but he loves her. And she was taken from him, not cause he was a bad guy, but because his wife was more useful to Whitehall dead.

And I guess maybe I thought they deserved to meet. You care about her, we both do. But unlike you I was willing to take a risk to get her the answers she deserved and wanted even if she'd forgotten she'd wanted them anymore.

Actually, to her, we were dragging her into a hostile enviroment. How did she know what we'd do, what you'd order to happen? We could have killed her, or locked her up, she'd heard of worse working for Rising Tide.

Its not shocking that you and Garrett trained together, there are more similarities than I think you'd ever admit.

Once. I spoke to him once. He was absolutely batshit and wasn't at all above leveraging someone else's life in order to save his own. It's no wonder the two of you got along. And I know what happened, Ward. Part of the details, at least. SHIELD was only trying to keep her safe.

That was her choice to make, Ward! Not yours! You can't just force two people into a room together and hope for the best when only one of them wants to be there.

She wasn't that much of a threat. A low level hacker with questionable ties, you know as well as I do the worst she would have gotten was a slap on the wrist. It's not like she was an unindexed powered individual leveling city blocks in her spare time.

Don't you dare bring John into this.

Leveraging someones life to save his own. So, say, handing someone over to a US Senator who could protect their little illegal organisation. Or worse than that? Just so I'm clear on the level of hypocracy you're deciding to go with.

She was too busy being May's new mini me. Couldn't let her have a thought of her own could you?

So, okay. If she was? If she was an unindexed gifted, a threat. What would you do? Call me curious.

Come on Phil, you're just as good at twisting the truth, making something seem just right enough that its justified. No wonder he wanted to try turn you first. Always said it probably wouldnt work though. Too black and white to ever see the grey areas. Turns out he might have had a point there too. He told me more stories than you'd think

She was still thinking and acting for herself, Ward. Just because May took over training her doesn't mean she co-opted her thought processes.

Ward. You don't have to ask. You know the protocol as well as I do. Assess the threat, evaluate their level of control and their willingness to comply with restrictions. If threat is deemed minimal assign them a handler to monitor their behavior. If threat is deemed lethal or the individual is unwilling to comply, containment protocols have to be put into place, the level of which depends entirely on the individual.

There are no grey areas when it comes to dealing with HYDRA. They're a bunch of mass murdering psychopaths. The John I trained with, the one I called a friend, would have recognized that.

Pat on the back here, congratulations there, you're telling me you weren't seeing the changes into a good little agent. You say jump they say how high, right? No matter what you ask. What happens when they question you, do they get a say?

You're right. Those are the protocols. Must be out of SHIELD too long.

John hated them as much as you. But they were useful. Means to an end. Means to get back at the people who had abandoned him to die with no extraction. Left him with nothing. Few Hail HYDRA's later and he was recovered, made stronger. Was it right? No. But he had his reasons. I think he did believe in SHIELD once, years ago. But that changed him, and then he found me. Messed up little kid he could make into a weapon. And I guess it was another grey area.

You would have gotten a trial. That's a little different than letting someone bleed out after they've been shot by your men.

Of course they had a say. Whatever you might think of me, I'm not a dictator. ~~Except~~ Some people go against orders because they think it's the right thing to do, Ward. It complicates things, but I understand why they do it. It's better than following blindly when you know something wrong.

It depends entirely on the individual.

~~If he'd just~~ I remember that mission, when he made it back in, half dead, his intestines only in his gut because he's packed them and duct taped them down. Him spending months in the hospital just to recover while Fury and I raged at command about what the hell had happened. We could have helped him. If he'd just talked to us, we could have. He was one of ours.

No. No dont you dare. I'd have gotten a show. Paraded in front of the world, the public face of HYDRA and another chance right before the election for Christian to show what a hero he was to the world. His own brother. The one the sainted Ward's just never bring up, the one that went a bit wrong. Right? Come on you know my history, you know what he's capable of and you dropped me right back into... Dont you ever dare try to convince me you thought I'd be better off. You threw me to the wolves to save yourself. Be honest. Like I said, it was tactical. It was a good move. But don't pretend it was the kind one.

See, when you took Skye on I remember her being the one you basically let ignore protocol. The one to find loopholes we wouldn't see. Tell me, did she want to see me? Cause I'm pretty sure getting information from me was the last thing she wanted to do. But you ordered her down there, didn't you?

By then it was too late. You and Fury were getting nowhere and I guess Hydra had a better offer for him.

And with me it was always too late. Except when it came to Skye.

Said what? Hey by the way, I'm HYDRA, so is John Garrett, and Alexander Pierce, Sitwell, Rumlow? You'd have believed it? Or checked it out with one of the very trustworthy higher ups?

Ultimately? I give as much of a damn about HYDRA as John did. It was him I was there to look out for. And I did that, no matter what. That was the mission. Find out what had brought you back. Find out if we could duplicate it.

You don't walk away from the mission.

Fine! Okay. I knew exactly what I was sending you back to. I knew he was lying, as much as I tried to convince myself he wasn't, as much as I tried to tell myself that he was going to honor his word and make sure you were treated fairly and humanely, I knew exactly what I was sending you into. But it was you or all of us, and as much as I hated it, it was a choice I had to make.

And yes, I ordered her. Because we needed that info, and you insisted she was the only one you would speak to. I knew she wasn't comfortable with the situation, but I made her do it anyway because it was necessary.

I would have at least talked to Fury. I probably wouldn't have believed you, not right away, but it would have been better than getting gutted and caught offguard by the fact.

You do when it's forcing you into a position you know is wrong. You do when it's demanding that you sit on the sidelines and watch as the people you care about get slaughtered.

And Fury would take the next step, talk to Pierce, and he'd have died then and there. And so would you, and so would I and it would all have been very unfortunate. You know how deep in we were, you couldn't know who to trust.

Besides I wouldn't do that to John. I couldn't.

Wrong? Everything we do is wrong, we kill, we betray. I just happened to do it for the other side and it makes me a monster? I had to watch from the sidelines. I had to pretend John being HYDRA broke me because I had to get on that plane in case Hand took justice into her own hands. And she tried, so I acted.

I didn't plan it, any of it.

I just...I had my orders. I wasnt comfortable with the situation but I did it anyway. Because it was necessary.

All right. Yes. Fury probably would have gone to talk to Pierce. Alex was one of his closest friends, and pretty much the only person in the higher ranks Nick trusted. So maybe. Maybe it would have ended like that. But you don't know because you didn't try.

I never should have let you go. I was worried, and I let you do what I thought you needed to, but... Maybe if you'd been with the rest of us, things would have turned out differently. If Victoria had killed John, the rest of it wouldn't have played out.
