It was an understanding within the Corner household that his real name was not Adam. But, still unable to recall his birth name, they accepted this moniker for the easy sanity of Rachel, her husband, the children, and himself. It didn't bother him as much as he thought; it was easy to respond to when other people needed to refer to you or call your attention. And, he believed, maybe if he heard it enough, something would piece together and he would remember the most important piece of his identity puzzle.

He had begun to remember things in the past week. Slowly, images were coming back to him as he regained his strength and mobility. It wasn't all at once, and not in a blinding way, but flashes of memories had begun to surface. Two children, a boy and a girl with the same color hair as his own, rushing his legs when Benjamin did the same in the manor gardens.

Were they his children? They appeared so happy and familiar...

He also remembered that he liked quidditch. His favorite team was the Caerphilly Catapults, even though he was very obviously (confusingly) not Welsh. That had come up when Michael asked about attending an opening season match over dinner.

The wonder of his nationalism was still in question. French was a struggle, English was much easier, he knew of Paris and found that when Rachel had brought him to the French Ministry of Magic, his knowledge of how to get there and the city streets was perfect. His wand was from Ollivander's (the only British wandmaker worthwhile) which... muddled things. Admittedly, he had only been in Cheshire with the Corners for two full days, but something about it did not seem... He couldn't quite...

A quick poke to the stomach snapped him from his thoughts. He blinked, turning his head to stare at the six-year-old on his lap. He apologized for trailing off, starting again at the top of the page. They almost finished the bedtime story, would have, if not for the realization that Benjamin's mother had been standing in the doorway.

"Uh oh," he gasped as Benjamin scrambled back into bed. "We'll have to finish tomorrow."

😳

All of the sudden, he came to. His chest rattled as he took a deep breath, his eyes flew open like finally free from an enchanted sleep, and---

A sharp pain shot up from his leg, temporarily stilling him from further movement. He leaned back, a hiss escaping between his teeth as he had not been expecting such a feeling. But as his palms pressed down, he realized he hadn’t been anticipating what was beneath them, either. A bed with soft sheets and plush pillows behind his back. The setting looked expensive, and that would have been enough to stop him in contemplative thought if he had not caught a strange sight out of the corner of his eye.

Brow furrowed, he winced as he reached for his opposite arm to push up his sleeve. Along his arm was a large gash, one completely healed over, but that wasn’t what struck him. What perplexed him was that he didn’t know where it had come from. And was that…? His head tilted as his fingers, lagging a bit with the action, pushed his sleeve up further to reveal what looked like a tattoo. Was that… a compass? When had he…?

He blinked, staring hard for a moment. Doing that brought an unfamiliar ache, and halfway to pressing his palm to his forehead to ease that pain, he noticed something else. Beside his bed, on the bedside table, was…

He quickly retreated his hand from the snapped wand, twisting immediately toward the sound of a door opening and closing. As footsteps approached, he struggled to sit himself up straight and failed.

NEW YEAR'S EVE! OPEN TO ALL!

WEDDING! OPEN TO GUESTS!

Miles felt, he felt, he felt everything! He could not sleep last night, he left bed early this morning and spent it poolside with Sabine, breakfast was barely touched, he felt nervous, but ready! Excited, but wanting to make every moment last a millennium. Most of all, he felt very loved, and told Mira so as often as he could, thinking it would never be enough. The morning had whirled by, they were married under the Moroccan sun, in the middle of the vast Sahara Desert that showcased the enormity of this step, how very little they were when it came to the rest of the world, making him think that they needed to take advantage of every moment they could.

With his mind having been jumping everywhere all day, it was no wonder that Miles had already made his rounds about the room before the first course of dinner had been served. He'd lost Sabine to his sister, then their mother, and now it was time to find his wife and perhaps whisk her to the dance floor again? Or did she wish for cake? Or maybe to sneak away for a private moment because her dress made his hands twitch with anticipation of the evening---

"Mrs. Lufkin!" Miles let out, putting his hands up as if seeing Mira for the first time that day. He clasped his hands at his chest, and then bowed as if being graced by her presence (he was!). "May I have this dance?"

He lifted his head to waggle his eyebrows, his smile brighter than it had ever been before.
