It had been a few days since she had filed a missing person report on Darren, and so far the Hit Wizards hadn't done anything more for her than come to her home and ask her even more questions. Hit Wizard Dobbs had told her that allowing a team to come and investigate might help them discover more clues, but Devon was running on fumes, and she felt like they were doing nothing more than violating her personal space. The officers they had sent to her house were far less kind than Dobbs had been, and let out sighs whenever she didn't have answers to what they were asking. It hadn't taken very long for her to kick them out, telling them she had to put Ella down for a nap.
Unfortunately for her, she wasn't the only one in the house who had been feeling restless. Her daughter only slept for a few hours at a time these days. Devon was certain that she could sense that something was wrong, and it pained her whenever she would cry for Dada. She had been such a Daddy's Girl since the day she was born, so his absence didn't go unnoticed.
"Ella, please!"
Devon was sitting on the couch massaging her temples with her hands, her toddler gripping at her leg, tears rolling down her cheeks. She had been crying for what seemed like hours, and while she was usually able to calm her down with relative ease, the little girl had been impossible this last week. Raising her voice hadn't helped matters, and Devon shut her eyes, praying for the strength she needed to get through this day when she heard a knock at the door. It startled her a bit, but she moved passed Ella to look through the door to see who was on the other side. She thought for a moment it might be someone with news about where Darren was, but instead she saw her best friend standing on the other side.
Unlocking the door, Devon pulled it open. Seeing Scarlett standing there, with Ella screaming in the background, made her feel like she wanted to cry.
"Thank you for coming," she said, stepping aside so she could enter her chaotic, messy house.
