For someone who did not often lose their composure, Cara was finding herself wholly unable to steel her reaction for the third time this evening alone. With Saturday's wedding looming and threatening to go belly-up for a variety of reasons, Leda had graciously offered to assist Cara with the last-minute preparations of which she'd suddenly assumed responsibility. The task of the hour was garland-stringing (the Muggle way, unfortunately, as evidenced by minuscule nicks on her hands), but the heap of marigolds and vine lay forgotten in her lap while she stared at her cousin with a thunderstruck expression, mouth agape.
Immediately, her gaze went to the little boy that had accompanied Leda tonight—Saul, she'd introduced him as. The name seemed a funny one, yet oddly appropriate with his solemn and shadowy demeanour. His momentary restlessness upon entering Cara's parlour had been replaced by unearthly fascination with some shiny table-setting baubles, a stuffed lion that seemed well-loved clutched under one arm.
Cara was not sure which part of the story made her head spin more.
To speak logically, the answer would probably be that someone's death had been faked and only revealed by their return, followed shortly by the murky adoption (was he adopted? So much had been revealed, the details were difficult to keep track of just now) of Saul the orphan, but the tidbit echoing in her head above the others was that her cousin was
married. Married for a
while. In secret!
"He
must really be the one, to put up with all—this," Cara said after an eternal beat in which she attempted to pull herself together. There was certainly no way she'd be forgetting a tale like that.
