09:35 pm [dr_hermes] [Link]	Light up another one, Tony These clips are from THE AVENGERS# 5, May 1964 and #7, August 1964. Script by Stan Lee, art by Jack Kirby. Tony Stark has to wear the Iron Man chestplate all the time, because it keeps a piece of shrapnel from moving into his heart. When he lets the armor's power run down, that piece of metal instantly starts digging deeper, causing pain, dizziness and weakness. (This didn't seem the way such an injury would actually work, but it was great drama.) We got a lot of panels of a tortured Iron Man crawling doggedly toward an outlet to recharge his chestplate; he was quite the suffering hero, having to use up his power in a fight and then pay for it. Despite having a damaged heart that could only be kept functioning with machinery, the idea of quitting cigarettes didn't seem to occur to Tony, though. Steve Rogers and Bruce Wayne and Reed Richards smoked pipes, Nick Fury and Ben Grimm lit up stogies. But Tony was satisfied with a pack of Lucky Strikes. (I would have loved it if Kirby or an inker had added one panel of Iron Man with a cancer stick protruding from the grille of the Iron Man helmet. Just once.) 1964 might as well be another planet if you're in your twenties today. People smoked EVERYWHERE. Airplanes, restaurants, movie theatres, stadiums. Nobody thought anything of it. People smoked in supermarkets and ground out the butts on the floor. Doctors smoked in their offices. Teachers smoked (but students weren't allowed to). After the Surgeon General started hitting the public over the head with a 2X4 about the dangers of tobacco, habits gradually changed and laws were changed. Today, you see the furtive "cigarette outlaws" sullenly huddled outside buildings on their breaks. But it wasn't always today. Transformers: Cybertronians Could Totally Take Magneto, Shut Up so yeah, the New Avengers/Transformers crossover. basic plot: there's about to be a war going down between Symkaria (yes, a silver-haired lady shows up for a panel or two) and Latveria. SHIELD, detecting a mysterious structure in the area, sends in the Avengers to figure out what's going on. (addendum: those whose computers tend to choke on image-heavy posts, the comments warn me that you might want to beware.) 11:31 am [xdoop] [Link]	Mind rape? While they didn't create the term, TV Tropes defines "Mind Rape" as when "a character is attacked by a villain in the most painful non-physical way possible. Their mind and soul are assaulted with painful, horrifying visions and memories, and broken until they're powerless and numb, but not dead, although afterwards they may wish they were. Nothing sexual occurs, but everything else is there to resemble a rape - violation, helplessness, and the poisoning of what could otherwise be a source of joy." However I've seen a lot of people throw the term around whenever a character gets their mind read without their permission, as if it's just as bad (or almost as bad) as the act of sexual assault itself. I love Avengers: Fairy Tales in so many ways, but by far, my favorite thing about the miniseries is Claire Wendling's gorgeous art on the covers. 05:34 pm [schmevil] [Link]	Iron Man vs. Mandarin One of the things I've been missing in Invincible Iron Man, is how skillfully De La Torre and the Knaufs could build up dramatic tension, and then have the book just explode into a great action sequence. It's hard to present them here, because they sometimes take up half an issue or more. That's usually something that irritates me - why spend 12 pages on punching, when you could condense it to 3? But in DoS, where the pace is more measured, where the tension builds and builds for issues, a long fight sequence is welcome. So I'll just throw up some pages and hope you can grok the awesome from my meager offering. From Iron Man: Director of SHIELD #28, the big throw down between Iron Man and Mandarin, after Tony discovers that Mandarin plans to give the entire world the extremis treatment. Shockingly, just in the nick of time! Mandarin is ready to launch missiles, carrying an airborne version of the enhancile. 11:16 pm [dytabytes] [Link]	616? We don't need no steekin' 616! Hey guys! This is my first time sharing comics at the new S_D so I'm really excited! I thought I'd share a little bit of the Marvel Adventures Avengers. It may be marketed to kids, but it's got snark, it's got action and it's got some pretty good characterization and minimal angst, which is my kind of comic. I'd especially recommend it to those who aren't exactly thrilled with current 616!canon. I know I like it more. ( Dial-uppers might not be happy.
