Repose

[It happens late at night, so perhaps no one sees a darkness pass through the deepest part of the Repose woods, moving without a sound over fox hole and rabbit warren. There is no crash of destruction this time, no shattered old houses. There is a sense of foreboding that radiates to the southernmost edge of town, and a swathe of frightened animals, too scared to leave their dens until well after sunrise. The only physical remnant of its passing is the markings on trees and plants, but that might go unnoticed, so close to winter frosts. The bark of those trees it wound around is frozen and tight close to the ground, as if burned by the cold.]
