*having ensure that all of his above-board dealings are remaining above-board and afloat, makes his way to the Cape of Balar to carry out a business deal (even if the other party is unaware that there is a business deal to be made)*

*ambles into a rather hokey coffee shop to catch the last sitting for breakfast and finds a booth at the back, near the kitchen*

*idles over the menu until he can catch the eye of the blonde waitress, who looks far too old for this kind of job (not that she doesn't look good for age but still!)*

[Mood | angry]

*decides something needs to be done about the Gondolin situation, even if next to no one is aware that there is a Gondolin situation* *is sick to the back teeth of shipments going missing, of being outbid on certain jobs through the continent and of unexplained delays to his own shipments*

*makes plans to meet a main player in this whole scenario but plans to meet him on neutral ground, away from Hithlum, Thargelion or Gondolin herself*

*strolls into a kitsch little coffee shop on the Cape of Balar and sits down at a table in an alcove, waiting for his contact to arrive*

[Mood | bored]

*having spent the night in a room at the Fountain (not exactly five-star accommodation but she does not know how much worse it might have been or how much worse the population of Gondolin wishes her)*

*is given her meals and escorted to the bathroom as and when she requires and her belongings were indeed sent up to her, which is an unexpected civility in this hellish city (and to think she was starting to warm to the place)*

*finishes her lunch and sits down, examining her nails, wondering if she could request a radio or a magazine or something (do they intend to kill her with tedium?)*

*finds himself on the hunt for an entirely different breed of monster (and he must force himself to focus on this task alone when every fiber of his being practically screams Glorfindel and go)*

*splits up with Elemmakil at the bottom of the Fountain steps, snagging a House car in place of his own (go, Ecthelion, please go)* *and what comes next is a blur of taxis and phonecalls and green-yellow-red lights streaking overhead, and Vairë isn't anywhere in sight—*

*—until, quite suddenly and without fanfare, she is*

*is out of his car (half-pulled onto the sidewalk in his haste to park) and at the driver's window, rapping sharply and flashing his ID, before he opens the door and directs what may be interpreted as a polite smile (but only if you don't know him or him-and-Glorfindel) at the woman inside* Lady Vairë. Your presence is required. Immediately.

[Mood | bored]

*Is having a rather slow day on the Flower front deak.*

*Thinks that on the minus side, the job can get a little dull what with the phone answering, mechanical smiling and light filing...plus she still hasn't met the boss.*

*But on the plus side her skills in solitaire, tetris and tea-making have come on leaps and bounds.*

*times her return to Gondolin with her son so that the train arrives in late and there is the bare minimum of staff in the Flower* (*really could do without the fuss*)

*has had a productive week in Himring, undisturbed, mostly because she finally hit upon a way of keeping her son quiet or, at least, quietly fretful* *cannot believe she didn't hit on this idea earlier although knows that it probably wouldn't have 'taken' if he were not quite so dependent on whiskey and the occasional tablet that finds its way into his juice or his dinner* *has given him a phone, identical to his own, with all his numbers programmed in but with an extra number or a wrong digit or a slight enough difference that calls will not connect and texts will not be delivered* *knows that in this age of mobile phones, no one remembers phone numbers anymore*

(*also, it's been a little funny, watching him watching his phone like a hawk*)

*managed to complete a lot of transactions and would quite happily cut Glorfindel loose in Himring except that she needs to sign some papers in a bank based in Gondolin (and, really, finds Gondolin to be a rather charming place)*

[Mood | scared]

*early in the morning, manages to work up the courage to leave his apartment (aided by a shot of whiskey and a stern talking-to from his mother)* *clutches his bag against his chest as she shepherds him through the Flower and does not make eye-contact with a single one of his employees (and so he cannot see their shocked or not-shocked expressions)*

*sits quietly in the back of the taxi, trembling very minutely, and worrying at his thumbnail (ignoring his mother's sharp reprimand that there will be nothing left) and is surprised when the taxi pulls up at the station* *climbs out of the car, legs wobbling slightly, and is utterly disoriented as he looks up at the station*

[Mood | devious]

*after another few days of scrambling to get through the House's work (Glorfindel would have to have a relapse or the flu or whatever the Mandos is wrong with him just at the start of the tourist season), finally turns her attention to Ecthelion's request*

*after a very short time, trawling through online searches and a couple of phone calls to contacts in the Cape region, realises that Vairë is very elusive or doesn't exist* *blows air out through her teeth with irritation and picks up the phone to place a call to one of the guys who worked on the Flower construction*

*thinks nothing more of it until another day has passed (and still no sign of the Lord of the House) and a package lands on her desk* *opens it and slides out a set of keys*

*bites her lip and, having gathered up some files, makes her way up to Glorfindel's apartment and ... lets herself in* (*almost feels that she should be armed*)

*finally hauls himself out to the Flower, feeling a little contrite (because he hasn't done so before now) and a little more concerned (because Glorfindel seems to have dropped off of everyone's radar)* *figures a good lookaround and a quick look-in on the man himself will take care of both birds, though*

*thinks the architecture's even more impressive up-close than it is from the road, as are the grounds, which are already greening up promisingly* *can't wait to see what it looks like in a month or two, when all of the House's namesakes start blooming*

*lets himself in and meanders toward the center of the foyer, looking up and all around, taking in the design* *and though it does look like the Flower, for the most part, he wonders where the difference is?* *it's just that opulence doesn't quite seem to fit with the Glorfindel-of-now, any more than the Virtuosos trip did*

*heads to the reception desk, only belatedly remembering that Tanya is filling in for Sophie* *smiles chipperly at the new girl and inquires about Glorfindel (any chance you'll believe I'm here on dire House business, ma'am?)*

[Mood | relieved]

*will allow that it was a close call and is going to have to be more careful about the strategic placement of opioids in her son's apartment in the future but was rather suprised to learn that the administration of naloxone has such a dramatic and sudden effect (within minutes, her son was sitting bolt upright, gagging for air but very much alive)*

*helped him to bed (while he was still too incoherent to protest or question her) and, once she was sure he was settled for the night, took a couple of sleeping pills and slept through till the morning*

*gets up with her alarm clock at 6am and potters around the apartment, contemplating this and that colour scheme (she could be very happy here) and waits for her son to emerge*

[Mood | confused]

*spends the next couple of days going about his somewhat-more-harried-than-usual business (scrambling as the House covers for his newly missing third-in-command)*

*finally receives another text from Glorfindel and is rather hurt by it, and a little irritated too, but bewildered most of all (is it sarcasm? (but Glorfindel is never sarcastic) is he playing games? (but why would he do such a thing?) and he still didn't get an answer to his question (did I do something wrong?))*

*calls back right away in the hopes of getting Glorfindel but the phone just rings and rings before switching over to voicemail (again)* *tries not to sound too upset when he leaves his message, but of course Erestor was perfectly right—this is all so out-of-character for Glorfindel*

Hi. It's me again. I...don't understand what's going on with you here. Can you please find five minutes to call me back? I. I miss you.

*as the evening wears on and he still receives no further answer, finally makes another trip over to the Flower* *inquires after Glorfindel at the front desk and gets both a shrug and a headshake from the girl filling in and so stops into Elemmakil's office next*

*is rather disappointed that it is so easy to confuse her son with clearly-flawed logic (but he was never all that quick on the uptake)* (Rehab doesn't always work, you know, darling. For some people, it's just as healthy to have an occasional glass of wine so that they don't go on binges. It might even be healthier that way) (*and he believed her, hence the empty bottle of wine after dinner last night*)

*decides to investigate the rest of the Flower (and even she has to admit that there is such potential in this building)* *is considerably put out to learn that Glorfindel's office is always locked when he is not there (because he is usually so very trusting** *makes her way, instead, to his little secretary's office and, yes, it is unlocked*

*wakes up late the morning after the Virtuosos, having slept deeply through the whole night* *sits up and immediately feels woozy and nauseated* *rubs his head and forces his eyes open*

*looks around his hotel room with a sinking feeling (because he hasn't been responsible for this kind of carnage for months and months)* *swallows thickly and registers the empty mini-bottles of wine and an entirely full litre-bottle of water* *sees his clothes strewn around the room and blinks, startled (and cannot remember the frenzied search for his mobile phone at some point during the previous evening)* *examines a couple of blister-packs of medication and they seem legitimate enough (anti-nausea and anti-emetic) but isn't quite sure how the loose tablets on the bedside table fit in to the picture*

*shakily gets to his feet and feels slightly better after a hot shower* *gets dressed with painstaking slowness and packs his bag* *puts the medicine packets into his bag but sweeps the loose tablets and the bottles of wine into the waste paper bin (it is damage control and he doesn't want to think about it)* *grabs the bottle of water and makes his way out into the living room (and he is already cringing)*

[Mood | optimistic]

*decides to tune into the Virtuoso Awards after all, if only to try and catch a glimpse of Glorfindel* *winged another quick text his way (good luck; gondolin's rooting for you. xoxo -e) earlier in the day but hasn't heard back yet (hasn't spoken to Glorfindel at all since he left town, actually, which is a bit of a bummer, but then he's sure Glorfindel's really busy)*

*as day gives way to evening, puts the sax away a little earlier than he'd planned and sends Elemmakil a text this time (drinks and v awards w/e? we can be the fan club but i'm not wearing a flower in my hair. -e)*

*dials up Erestor next*

*having arrived in Vinyamar, is on the phone to (the real) Beryl Estes* No, no, I can't apologise enough. Oh, you're too kind. [...] Yes, it could happen to anyone. It's just so unfortunate. *with a light laugh* No, no, I think it will be a lesson to us all: Never eat seafood on a plane, even in first class. [...] Oh, no. I'm sure we'll be fine without a doctor. I rather think I got off lightly. I didn't much like the look of the prawns. [...]I will. [...] Yes, I will. He'll be delighted and honoured, I'm sure. Yes, you can quote me on that.[...] [...] Many thanks.

*hangs up and mutters* Eru, does that woman ever shut up? *smooths down her hair and walks through the hotel suite living area into her son's room, rapping sharply on the door on her way in, frowning at the blazing lights and drawn curtains* Eru. What a state.

*arrives back at the hotel after a long day of meetings with the Palace and the Hammer to update various security files and folios (and so nearly takes the turn for the Fountain instead of the Hidden Rock)*

*asks if he has any messages at reception and is probably not as disconcerted as he should be to find that his mother has taken them* *is just about to get into the lift when his phone rings*

*veers away from the lift as he answers* Hello?

*sits in the passenger's seat of Glorfindel's car, on their way to dinner*

*is feeling a little guarded (and nervous), given what Glorfindel has told him about Vairë's seeming reservations (and even though he's firm in the opinion that Vairë really should be the one who's anxious to make a good first impression)*

*idly runs a hand through his hair as he looks out the window* Well, she likes Telerin food. So we're off to a good start, anyway?

*and because it would not do to arrive in Gondolin with her matching, monogrammed luggage or her best fur coat, roots through her clothes from a winter or two ago and packs light (deceptively light)*

*travels first class, by airplane and by train, courtesy of her son's unforeseen generosity, and makes the very most of it* *is certainly entirely relaxed when she arrives in the city* *emerges from the train, with her slightly tired, old leather bag on her shoulder and a compact roll-along suitcase*

*with a wide-eyed and somewhat confused expression, makes her way down the platform*

[Mood | pleased]

*appears to be pouring over the Cape Daily News in the corner of her regular lunch café* *is actually people-watching with a faint sort of interest (he is cheating on his wife with her and she is cooking the books at her company and he likes underage boys and she thinks no one notices the track marks on her arm and won't it be terribly interesting when if this all comes out?)*

*offers the waiter a distant smile as he refills her water glass but is distracted by the buzzing of her phone, which is sitting in the centre of the table* *looks at the incoming number with curiosity until a small (more genuine?) smile touches her lips as she recognises the area code* (*now, who does she know in Gondolin?*)

*clears her throat and answers the phone in very gentle tones (causing the waiter to do a double-take)(she's usually so harsh and demanding, after all)* Hello, Vairë speaking. (It didn't take long at all, did it?)
