[ Event: Ball ]
[Just as evening starts to fall, one of the parks in Sector 4 has been festooned with streamers, bright lights in a variety of colors, a big upraised dais, tables of refreshments, and music. It looks like a perfectly normal party from the outside. Optional masks are provided in little bins beside the dais, but you're responsible for your own costumes...!

...And if you're dressed as a character, the moment you step onto the dais, you will believe yourself to have led that character's life for your whole life. This effect will last until "midnight", in this case Sunday, even if you leave the party.]

No, I know what you mean. All of the parties I held had wine at least. I cannot think of one I attended that did not.

This prohibition on alcohol seems a little too stringent for me. I can barely cook without it half the time.

Using cooking wines you mean?

And it does make me wonder - this sudden turn against alcohol. I know it confined it to the tavern before, but not to have it at all?

[amused] Acumen seems to be of the mentality that everyone should be involved in punishments. Public shaming, global prohibition... Two idiots decide to try and brew their own alcohol, and now no one can have any. It's pretty poor governing, if you ask me.

It is never a good practice - punish the whole for the mistakes of the few. It only breeds anger and resentment.

I suppose it's a scare tactic, but fear is a terrible way to rule people for precisely the reason you mentioned. [tips his glass at Ashura]

Heh, I hardly call this particular punishment a scare tactic.

And if he is needing to rule us through fear... why must he rule us through fear? Weak rulers rule through fear.

It's a different kind of scare tactic. Designed to create an environment of hesitation and shame, to make our peers censor us. "I heard about what you did last night." "Don't do that, we'll all get in trouble!" "Behave yourself, or everyone will know about it." Like children made to sit in a corner and face the ridicule of their peers. [pathetic and half-hearted scare tactics, to boot]

Probably Acumen assumes we won't obey any other way, since it doesn't expect its prisoners to be cooperative.

So it tries to shame us instead. Well, good luck with that. It has to sway a 275 year old man away from his habits.
