DAY 347 : Haunted Hotel Mingle

[You have a lot of baggage for your stay. Not the kind you stuff free robes and toiletries into. No, the kind of baggage that helps drive the sort of scenarios you experience. Your fears and your hang ups. Or maybe not everything is about you after all and you have a perfectly random, horrific time. Either way, the adventure starts now. Ring the bell for service.]

Deal. And frankly I prefer to man the torch in situations like this. [Flashlights and intercoms are his weapons of choice. [He won't say it, but he's very glad Sam is the one he's run into here. This is his forte and that means he'll have plenty to talk about. The last thing Ianto wants is silence. It's easier to be distracted.] Shall we try downstairs, do you think? Seems like the sort of place for a kitchen.

[Sam also caught Ianto's message before about Jack. He's glad for the distraction that is keeping him from bringing up the awkward thing for now.] That would be best. I've been looking for a flight of stairs. I think this place is shifting as we walk through it.

When you say torch, you don't mean an actual torch with fire do you? [Just busy being extremely English, right?]

Lovely. [He's right, though. Usually he's got a fairly good sense of direction and Torchwood has investigated enough creepy warehouses and abandoned buildings that he's learned how to keep his barings in this kind of place. Here it doesn't seem to be working.]

What? No, an electric one. Flashlight for you, I think. [Extremely Welsh, thanks Sam.]

[Yeah, yeah.]

It would be good to find one of those too. Or an actual torch just in case. [Sam tries a doorknob at the end of the hall but it doesn't give. He gives it a firm shake.] I think it's rusted shut.

Can we break it down, do you think? [And by we he means the one who is taller and not in a suit.]

[Sam nods once.] Stand back. [Sam takes a step back himself to get more room for momentum then gives the door a hard kick. He means business, door!

And the door listens because it does manage to swing open rather than breaking Sam's leg by being immovable. On the downside...there's just more hallway through the door. Surprise!]

Probably should have seen that coming.

Isn't the point of these thing to be rather unpredictable? [He ventures into the hallway, since there's nothing to be gained by standing around staring down it. He's not immediately attacked by a ghost, which is good but he does get the distinct feeling of being watched. Maybe it's just the atmosphere.] Personally I've always preferred action movies to horror ones.

I guess that depends. Is the end goal to rehabilitate, experiment, or break us?

[Sam starts down the new hallway because why not?] Maybe we'll run into a ninja and things will get more exciting for you.

I don't know if they always have an end goal with these things. I think they just get bored. [He's been giving a lot of thought to why things happen here since yesterday, and he can't quite keep the bitterness out of his voice.]

I hope there is some larger purpose to all of it than that. [But the day-to-day adventures? It could be nothing more than a case of "why not?"] It'll make it easier to figure them out. [He hears that bitterness though. You thought you could only taste it, didn't you? Well, Sam isn't tasting your words today, Ianto! #totallynormaltag]

[There are a lot of things he could say and since Sam is in his bitterness mood tasting zone thing maybe he can guess at them. Like, if there's a larger purpose why is Jack gone? Most of it pretty much boils down to that. He'd rather it be random. At least then he doesn't have to feel like it's his fault. In the end he just lets it drop. What's the point?] Looks like there might be a kitchen down here after all. Come on.

Good. Let's hope it's stocked. [He heads down the hallway, keeping a close eye out for trouble when a woman flickers into existence before them. Her flesh looks partially rotted and her clothes are old fashioned. You can almost see through her. Without hesitation, Sam swings his fireplace poker, momentarily dispersing her into nothingness.] Ianto, watch out. She could come back anywhere, anytime.

[Of course Ianto reacts with surprise to the woman's appearance, taking a hurried step backwards and wishing again he had a flashlight to shine aggressively at her or something. Luckily he's with Sam Winchester who is good at these things and he decides to let him be in charge of the situation.] Was that a ghost?

She's acting like a ghost so far. [Things here don't always play by the rules of his home, but so far so good.] Come on, we need to find that salt.

Right. [He hurries towards the end of the hallway, letting Sam deal with the ghost of it comes back. Sure enough the door reveals a kitchen with way too many cabinets and potential salt hiding places. And right on cue that ghost or whatever it is is back, appearing in one of the dark corners.] You handle her, I'll look for the salt?

[He's already on his way over with the poker.] Make a circle with it if you find it and get inside.
